Semester 1 Final Examination¶
Coverage: Chapters 1–9, 13, and 36 (Modules 1–8), the whole of Semester 1's "Foundations" outcome — explain and classify the basic nature, condition, and functional role of every planet in a D1 chart.
Format note: this exam is built like the closing exam of a university semester, not a longer quiz. It tests understanding, reasoning, application, and integration across the whole semester — not recall of any single lesson in isolation. Several questions deliberately require material from two or more modules at once. Open-book (your own workbooks, lessons, and Field Manual) is expected and appropriate — this tests your ability to reason and locate, not your memory alone.

Section I — Foundations and Terminology (short answer, 1–3 sentences each)¶
- State BPHS's own argument (Ch. 1) for why a graha is a legitimate significator of real-world outcomes, not an arbitrary symbol.
- Define jīvātmā-aṁśa and paramātmā-aṁśa, and state which predominates in the grahas.
- Define Kalapurusha, and state the diagnostic technique it licenses.
- Define Ishta Kaala, Swodaya, and Lankodaya, and state which chart element each one is used to compute.
- Define Yoga Karaka and Maraka, using Ch. 36's own terms, not outside Jyotish vocabulary.
Section II — Classification and Calculation¶
- Saturn is at Capricorn 15°. State its exact dignity (exalted, Mooltrikona, own sign, debilitated, or none of these), and show the reasoning — not just the label.
- Classify Capricorn across all four Module 3 sign-classification systems (modal, sign-level benefic/malefic + gender, dhātu-triplicity) — and state one attribute of Capricorn's individual profile (Ch. 4 v.6–24) that this translation does not provide.
- For Libra Ascendant, determine the complete functional classification (benefics, malefics, Yoga Karaka(s), Maraka(s), neutral planets) by reasoning from house lordship — show your work, not just the final table.
- A planet rules the 5th and 11th houses for a given ascendant. Classify each lordship's tier and state the combined functional result, explaining any tension between the two tiers.
- Using the graduated aspect table (Ch. 9 v.11–15), state the aspect strength Jupiter casts on the 7th house from its own position, and on the 5th/9th houses from its own position.
Section III — Comparison and Integration¶
- Compare natural benefic/malefic (Ch. 3 v.11), sign-level benefic/malefic (Ch. 4 v.5), and functional benefic/malefic (Ch. 36). These are three independent classification systems that share overlapping vocabulary. For each pair, state whether BPHS ever explicitly bridges them, or whether any bridge would be this course's own inference.
- Trace how Module 2's Ratio of Effects (Ch. 3 v.59–60, a priority ladder combining dignity and relationship) and Module 8's four-tier house-lordship framework (Ch. 36 v.2–7, where a stronger tier obstructs a weaker one) are structurally similar decision procedures. What do they have in common as reasoning patterns, independent of their specific subject matter?
- Module 5 introduced Kendra/Trikona/Trishadaya/Parashraya specifically for Vimshopaka Bala (Varga-strength grading). Module 8 reused the identical framework for functional benefic/malefic classification. Explain why the same four-tier structure applies validly to two apparently different questions (Varga placement quality vs. house-lordship quality).
Section IV — Source Verification and Ambiguity Recognition¶
- This course logged nine Decision Journal entries during Semester 1. Choose three and, for each: state the chapter/verse involved, summarize the ambiguity in one sentence, and state this course's working treatment.
- For each of the following claims, state whether it is (a) explicitly stated in BPHS's verse text, (b) translator commentary, (c) this course's own inference, or (d) not located in the source at all: a. "The Sun's avatāra is Rāma." b. "Rahu's own sign is Aquarius." c. "Every Varga's construction rule follows the same general division-and-lordship-sequence logic." d. "A house's effect is at full strength exactly at its cusp and tapers across the 15° before and after."
- Name one chapter in Semester 1 where a real chart diagram existed in the EPUB but was broken in the Markdown extraction, and state how this course handled it.
Section V — Applied Chart Reasoning (uses your own D1 chart)¶
- State your own Ascendant sign, and give its complete Module 3 profile (all attributes that this translation actually states for that sign — mark any gaps honestly as "not stated," don't fill them).
- Determine the dignity of every planet in your own chart (Module 2, Ch. 3 v.49–54).
- Determine your own chart's complete functional classification (Module 8) — benefics, malefics, Yoga Karaka(s), Maraka(s) — with the house-lordship reasoning shown for at least two planets.
- Using Ch. 8 v.39–43's alternate-ascendant technique, identify what your own chart indicates about your father (9th from Ascendant and 9th from the Sun) and compare the two readings.
- Complete a full seven-step Chart Clinic reasoning chain (Observation → Relevant BPHS Principle → Supporting Evidence → Contradicting Evidence → Interpretation → Confidence Level → Reflection) for one chart factor of your choice from anywhere in Semester 1's material. Contradicting evidence must be genuinely sought, not skipped.
Section VI — Extended Synthesis Essay (one required, ~400–600 words)¶
Choose one of the following:
Option A: "Trace the complete path from Chapter 1's cosmological argument to Chapter 36's functional benefic/malefic table. At each stage, name the specific prior-module concept that the next stage depends on, and explain what would break in the final Yoga Karaka classification if any one earlier stage were removed."
Option B: "This semester's Decision Journal grew to nine entries, several involving arithmetic or logical inconsistencies within BPHS's own worked examples. Discuss what this reveals about how a serious student should relate to a single-edition translation of a centuries-old technical text — and defend, using at least two specific entries as evidence, why 'teach the verified rule, flag the unreliable example' is a better policy than either blind reproduction or silent correction."
Option C: "Semester 1 repeatedly separates classification systems that share vocabulary (sign-level vs. planet-level benefic/malefic; natural vs. functional benefic/malefic; Rashi Drishti vs. Graha Drishti). Explain why this discipline matters for chart-reading accuracy, using at least three specific examples from across different modules, and discuss one risk of not maintaining this discipline once Semester 2's much larger house-by-house material begins."
