Module 1 Review — Cosmology and the Divine Origin of the Grahas¶
One-Page Summary¶
BPHS opens with cosmology, not technique, because it needs to establish why a planet can mean anything before it tells you what a planet means.
Chapter 1 ("The Creation") makes the foundational claim: every being carries both a jīvātmā-aṁśa (individual-soul portion) and a paramātmā-aṁśa (Supreme-Soul portion), in varying proportion — and the grahas are classified as predominantly paramātmā. This is wrapped in a creation account (Viṣṇu → Śaktis → Ahaṁkāra → Sānkhya evolution to the five elements) and a statement of who may ethically receive this teaching. The chapter also names Horā (predictive astrology, what this course studies) as the foremost of Jyotiṣa's three branches.
Chapter 2 ("Great Incarnations of the Lord") makes that claim concrete: each of the nine grahas is named as the incarnation-vehicle of a specific form of Viṣṇu (Rama=Sun, Krishna=Moon, Narasiṁha=Mars, Buddha=Mercury, Vāmana=Jupiter, Parashurāma=Venus, Kūrma=Saturn, Varāha=Rahu, Mīna=Ketu) — with four of the nine (Rama, Krishna, Narasiṁha, Varāha) singled out as wholly paramātmā (Pūrṇāvatāra), the rest carrying some jīvāṁśa too. Viṣṇu is stated to have incarnated as the grahas specifically to deliver karma-fruit to living beings.
Why it matters for chart reading: everything from here forward — planetary nature, karakas, yogas, dashas, remedies — assumes a planet is a real, karma-carrying significator, not a symbolic bookkeeping device. That assumption is not incidental; it is argued for, in these two chapters, before a single chart-judgment technique is introduced.

Common Mistakes¶
- Treating "Pūrṇāvatāra" as a technical strength rating. It is a mythological/cosmological classification (Ch. 2), not a Shadbala-type strength measure (Ch. 29). Do not carry this forward as if BPHS says Mars is always "stronger" than Mercury — see Module Test Q7 for exactly this trap.
- Citing the translator's Notes as if they were Parashara's verse. Both Ch. 1 Notes blocks (after v.1–4 and after v.21–24) are translator commentary — useful context, but a different authority level than the numbered verses.
- Getting Ch. 1's verse range wrong. Ch. 1 is verses 1–24, not more — an earlier draft of this course's own planning documents briefly stated "1–46" in error, caught and corrected before Lesson 1 was written. A reminder that even careful planning needs checking against the actual text.
- Forgetting that Rahu, not Saturn, pairs with Varāha. A common slip is assuming the "boar" avatāra goes with a more classically "heavy" planet like Saturn — the text is explicit (v.6–7) that Varāha is Rahu's (Saihikeya's) avatāra, and Saturn's is Kūrma.
- Skipping the "why" and jumping to the list. It's tempting to just memorize the nine pairings (Part A of the L02 application exercise) without holding onto why the pairings exist (Ch. 2 v.3) — the list without the reasoning doesn't transfer to later chapters as well.
