5. Homework — Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Calculation, worked step-by-step. New numbers below are clearly labelled abstract examples, chosen so the sum/difference stays ≤12 where noted (avoiding the unresolved >12 case — Decision Journal Entry 7).
Exercise 5A — Reproduce BPHS's Own Example 1. Natal Ascendant = Leo, Hora Lagna = Capricorn. Work through the full procedure (Lesson §5.2) and confirm the stated Varnada sign (Leo).
Exercise 5B — New Numbers, "Same Class" (Addition) Branch. Natal Ascendant = Aries (odd sign), Hora Lagna = Cancer (even sign).
- Find N1 (count from Aries direct to Aries, since Aries is odd).
- Find N2 (count from Pisces reverse to Cancer, since Cancer is even).
- Determine same/different class and combine accordingly.
- Find the Varnada sign.
Exercise 5C — New Numbers, "Different Class" (Subtraction) Branch. Natal Ascendant = Gemini (odd sign), Hora Lagna = Virgo (odd sign — both counted from Aries direct).
- Find N1 (count from Aries direct to Gemini).
- Find N2 (count from Aries direct to Virgo).
- Determine same/different class and combine accordingly.
- Find the Varnada sign.
Exercise 5D — Dasha Years. For Exercise 5B's result, how many years is the Varnada Dasha of the Ascendant (per v.17–18: years = signs counted between the natal Ascendant and its Varnada sign)?
Exercise 5E — The Unresolved Case. Natal Ascendant = Taurus (even sign). Hora Lagna = Leo (odd sign). N1 = count from Pisces reverse to Taurus = 11. N2 = count from Aries direct to Leo = 5. Both counts are odd → same class → sum = 16. Is this sum within the range this course treats as reliably resolved (≤12), or does it fall into the unresolved case documented in Decision Journal Entry 7?
Exercise 5F — Running Chart Lab. If you have your own natal Ascendant and today's computed Hora Lagna, attempt your own Varnada-sign calculation — but only if your sum/difference comes out ≤12 (this course withholds a confident result above that, since BPHS's own two worked examples disagree on the counting direction for that case); if it exceeds 12, record that honestly as an unresolved case rather than guessing which counting direction to use.
Exercise 5G — Your Own Chart. If you know your own natal Ascendant and today's earlier-computed Hora Lagna, note them here — attempt the Varnada-sign calculation only if you're confident the sum/difference will be ≤12.
Chart Clinic. Lesson S01-M05-L02: Varnada Dasha — Application — Stage 1, likely deferred by design. Varnada Dasha produces long-run life-period predictions that are harder to verify quickly than a same-moment factor. If your natal-Ascendant/Hora-Lagna sum or difference exceeds 12 (the unresolved case noted above), this Clinic cannot be completed honestly at all — mark it "Deferred — Revisit Required" in your personal progress tracker's Deferred Chart Clinics Register and record why. Do not fabricate a resolution to close this out.

- Decision Journal Entry 7 documents a real contradiction between BPHS's own two worked examples. Does treating one as "the template" and the other as "an anomaly" feel like a defensible scholarly choice, or does it feel like you're guessing which one is right?
- Varnada Dasha's duration comes from a sign-count, not from any planet's actual motion. Does that change how much predictive weight you'd personally assign it compared to a motion-based Dasha (which you haven't studied yet, but can anticipate)?

§5A — Reproduce BPHS's Own Example 1
N1 = 5 (Aries direct to Leo). N2 = 3 (Pisces reverse to Capricorn). Both odd → sum = 8 → even → Pisces reverse to 8th sign → Leo, confirming BPHS's stated result.
§5B — New Numbers, "Same Class" Branch
N1 = 1 (Aries direct to Aries). N2 = 9 (Pisces reverse to Cancer: Pisces1, Aquarius2, Capricorn3, Sagittarius4, Scorpio5, Libra6, Virgo7, Leo8, Cancer9). Both odd → same class → sum = 1 + 9 = 10. Even → count from Pisces reverse to the 10th sign (…Cancer9, Gemini10) → Varnada = Gemini.
§5C — New Numbers, "Different Class" Branch
N1 = 3 (Aries direct to Gemini). N2 = 6 (Aries direct to Virgo). One odd (3), one even (6) → different class → difference = 6 − 3 = 3. Odd → count from Aries direct to the 3rd sign → Varnada = Gemini.
§5D — Dasha Years
Aries to Gemini, counted directly: Aries(1)–Taurus(2)–Gemini(3) = 3 years.
§5E — The Unresolved Case
Falls into the unresolved case (sum = 16 > 12) — this course does not assert a Varnada sign for this input, per the Decision Journal Entry 7 caveat.
