5. Homework — Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Identification/application — the book's own example first, then an abstract layout, then your own D1 chart.
Exercise 5A — Reproduce the Book's Own Example. Using Lesson §5.1 (the Aries Ascendant example), trace which planets aspect which.
Exercise 5B — Abstract Layout (clearly labelled, not a real chart). Ascendant = Libra (movable sign). Sun and Mercury are in Libra. Saturn is in Cancer.
- Which fixed signs does Libra (and therefore Sun/Mercury) aspect, per the sign-aspect rule? Which fixed sign is excluded?
- Using the graduated planetary-aspect table, name the sign(s) receiving Saturn's full aspect, ¾, ½, and ¼ strength — counting directly from Saturn's own position (Cancer) as the reference point, the same way the Lesson's table and A4 above do.
Exercise 5C — Your Own Chart.
- From your own D1 chart, record which sign each of your planets occupies — no aspect calculation required yet, just accurate recording.
- Identify which signs your own D1 chart's Ascendant sign aspects, per the sign-aspect rule.
- If you have Saturn, Jupiter, or Mars in your chart, identify their full-aspect house(s) using the graduated table.
Exercise 5D — Reasoning Check. If a house receives a full sign-aspect (Rashi Drishti) but only a ¼-strength planetary aspect (Graha Drishti) from the same underlying planet's position, does BPHS's own text (as read so far) say which one should be weighted more heavily? Explain your answer.

Lesson S01-M06-L01: Aspects of Signs and Planets — Application — Stage 1: identify which of your own planets aspects your natal Ascendant (1st house), using either or both aspect systems, and reason through the full seven-step chain (Observation → Principle → Supporting Evidence → Contradicting Evidence → Interpretation → Confidence → Reflection). Aspect is a same-moment factor (unlike Varnada Dasha's long-run predictions), making this a genuinely productive early verification test.

- BPHS states two aspect systems without resolving how they combine (v.16). Does that feel like an incomplete chapter, or an honest acknowledgment that a single chapter can't cover everything a full chart reading needs?
- Now that you know Saturn/Jupiter/Mars aspect every one of the four listed houses (just at varying strength), does that change how you'd have described their "special aspects" from prior general knowledge, if you had any?
- In one short paragraph, explain why a chapter that doesn't resolve how its two aspect systems interact might still be worth teaching both systems from, rather than picking one and ignoring the other.

§5A — Reproduce the Book's Own Example
Trace directly from Lesson §5.1's worked example: with Aries rising, Sun and Venus in Aries (movable) aspect the fixed signs Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius (skipping adjacent Taurus) — and therefore aspect Moon and Rahu in Leo, and any planets in Scorpio/Aquarius. Mercury and Mars in Taurus (fixed) aspect the movable signs Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn (skipping adjacent Aries) — and aspect Saturn in Cancer. Jupiter in Gemini (dual) aspects the other three dual signs: Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.
§5B — Abstract Layout
- Fixed signs aspected: Aquarius, Taurus, Leo. Excluded (adjacent): Scorpio.
- Saturn in Cancer (reference = 1st house): Full = Virgo (3rd), Aries (10th). ¾ = Capricorn (7th). ½ = Libra (4th), Aquarius (8th). ¼ = Scorpio (5th), Pisces (9th).
§5C — Your Own Chart
No fixed answer — self-recorded from your own chart. Self-check that (1) your sign placements are recorded accurately, (2) your Ascendant's aspected signs correctly apply the movable/fixed/dual rule, and (3) any Saturn/Jupiter/Mars full-aspect houses correctly use the graduated table with your own chart's houses as the reference frame.
§5D — Reasoning Check
No. BPHS's text as read through Ch. 9 (v.1–16) states both systems exist ("spoken of in two ways," v.16) but does not give a priority or weighting rule for cases where they might suggest different conclusions. This course does not assert one over the other — that reconciliation is explicitly deferred to Ch. 28 (Semester 2).
