5. Homework โ Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Classification / calculation โ applying a precise rule correctly, not yet interpreting what it means.
Exercise 5A โ Determine Dignity. For each planet/position below, work through the 5-step procedure (Lesson ยง5.4) and state the resulting dignity (Exalted / Mooltrikona / Own sign / Debilitated / Neither-yet โ since relationship-based dignity is next lesson). Items 1โ3 are deliberately all Mercury in Virgo at different degrees โ this tests whether you can apply Mercury's unique three-way split correctly. Items 4โ8 mix debilitation and exaltation cases deliberately โ don't assume a pattern; check each one against the actual table.
| # | Planet | Sign | Degree | Dignity | Reasoning (which rule applied) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mercury | Virgo | 10ยฐ | ||
| 2 | Mercury | Virgo | 18ยฐ | ||
| 3 | Mercury | Virgo | 27ยฐ | ||
| 4 | Sun | Libra | 10ยฐ | ||
| 5 | Saturn | Aries | 20ยฐ | ||
| 6 | Venus | Pisces | 27ยฐ | ||
| 7 | Mars | Cancer | 15ยฐ | ||
| 8 | Jupiter | Capricorn | 5ยฐ |
Exercise 5B โ Explain the Design. Why do items 1โ3 above all use the same planet and sign but different degrees? What is this drill specifically testing that a drill using seven different planets would not test as clearly?
Exercise 5C โ The Dignity Master Table. Build one table: columns = Planet | Exaltation (sign, degree) | Mooltrikona (sign, range) | Own sign(s) | Debilitation (sign, degree). This is a standing reference for the rest of the course.
Exercise 5D โ Your Own Chart. If you know your own chart, calculate the dignity of every planet using today's procedure (ยง5.4 of the Lesson). Record sign, degree, and resulting dignity for each โ pure observation, no interpretation yet. Then pick one planet and, in one short paragraph, state its dignity and one thing you already know about your own life history that might relate to that planet's core signification (from L2) โ don't draw a firm conclusion yet, this is preparation for the Chart Clinic below.
Chart Clinic. Lesson S01-M02-L04: Dignity โ Exaltation, Debilitation, and Mooltrikona โ Application โ Stage 1, first full activation. Determine the dignity of every planet in your own natal chart, and run the full seven-step reasoning chain on at least one whose dignity you can meaningfully test against known life outcomes.
6. Reflection Questions¶
(For your journal. No single right answer.)
- Today's system gives a precise, calculable answer (exalted/Mooltrikona/own/neither/debilitated) rather than a fuzzy impression. How does having a precise answer change your confidence when you apply it to your own chart in the Chart Clinic โ does precision make you more or less willing to actually test it against known outcomes?
- You now have a five-tier dignity scale (once L5's relationship tier is added). What do you predict happens to interpretation when a planet is strong by one measure (e.g., own sign) but poorly placed by another factor not yet covered (e.g., a bad house)? Don't answer definitively โ just note the tension you expect to resolve later.

ยง5A โ Determine Dignity
| # | Planet | Sign | Degree | Dignity | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mercury | Virgo | 10ยฐ | Exalted | Within Virgo's 0โ15ยฐ exaltation zone |
| 2 | Mercury | Virgo | 18ยฐ | Mooltrikona | Within Virgo's 15โ20ยฐ Mooltrikona range |
| 3 | Mercury | Virgo | 27ยฐ | Own sign | Within Virgo's 20โ30ยฐ own-sign range |
| 4 | Sun | Libra | 10ยฐ | Debilitated | Libra is Sun's debilitation sign; 10ยฐ is the exact deepest debilitation point |
| 5 | Saturn | Aries | 20ยฐ | Debilitated | Aries is Saturn's debilitation sign; 20ยฐ is the exact deepest debilitation point |
| 6 | Venus | Pisces | 27ยฐ | Exalted | Pisces is Venus's exaltation sign; 27ยฐ is the exact deepest exaltation point |
| 7 | Mars | Cancer | 15ยฐ | Debilitated | Cancer is Mars's debilitation sign (deepest at 28ยฐ); 15ยฐ is within the sign but not at the deepest point โ still debilitated, just not at maximum weakness |
| 8 | Jupiter | Capricorn | 5ยฐ | Debilitated | Capricorn is Jupiter's debilitation sign; 5ยฐ is the exact deepest debilitation point |
ยง5B โ Explain the Design
Items 1โ3 isolate one variable (degree) while holding planet and sign constant, which is the only way to cleanly test whether the three-way Virgo split is actually understood, rather than just pattern-matching "Mercury = exalted" from memory. Testing seven different planets would confirm you know each planet's general dignity sign, but not whether you can handle the fine-grained, degree-level distinctions that matter most for the one planet (Mercury) where they're most tightly packed. Item 6 above is placed among apparent "debilitation-looking" items deliberately, to check whether the drill's own framing gets treated as more authoritative than the actual table โ always check the specific rule, not the pattern of surrounding items.
Next lesson: Ch. 3, verses 55โ60 โ Natural, Temporary, and Compound (5-fold) Relationships, plus the Ratio of Effects table that scores results by dignity as a percentage.
Chart Clinic¶
Chart used: my own natal chart Stage: 1 (verification against known life history, not prediction) โ first full activation of Chart Clinic.
This is the first lesson where you have a precise, calculable chart factor to test. Do the calculation first, then reason through the full seven steps.
Step 0 โ Calculate¶
List every planet in your own chart with its sign and degree, and determine its dignity using Lesson ยง5.4's procedure. (This should already be done in your Workbook Exercise 10B / Homework #9 โ reuse that work here.)
Step 1โ7 โ Full Reasoning Chain¶
Choose one or two planets whose dignity result you can meaningfully test against something you already know happened in your life (relating to that planet's core signification from Lesson 2).
| Step | Your entry |
|---|---|
| 1. Observation โ the planet, its exact sign/degree, and its calculated dignity | |
| 2. Relevant BPHS Principle โ Ch.3 v.49โ54, the specific dignity rule that applies (cite exactly which โ exaltation, Mooltrikona, own sign, or debilitation) | |
| 3. Supporting Evidence โ from your known life history, connected to this planet's core signification (Lesson 2, v.12โ13) | |
| 4. Contradicting Evidence โ actively look for it; a strong dignity doesn't guarantee a smooth life outcome, and a weak one doesn't guarantee hardship โ note anything that complicates a clean match | |
| 5. Interpretation โ your reasoned conclusion, holding both 3 and 4 | |
| 6. Confidence Level โ strong / probable / tentative / speculative | |
| 7. Reflection โ dignity alone (without house placement, aspects, or relationships โ L5 is next) is still an incomplete picture. What would change your confidence level if you also knew this planet's house placement? |
Honesty Check¶
If your reflection genuinely doesn't match expectations, say so plainly rather than reaching for an explanation that rescues the theory. A mismatch, honestly recorded, is more valuable at this stage than a forced fit โ you have five more chart factors coming (relationships, houses, strength, yogas, dashas) that may explain a mismatch dignity alone cannot.
Reviewed for reasoning quality and honesty about mismatches, not for whether the dignity "predicted" the outcome.
