Homework is included in this Workbook. Complete the marked Homework sections before moving to the Quiz.

Homework β€” Practice and Understanding is on this page. Homework β€” Chart Observation and Application continues on this chapter's Application page.

1. Chapter Purpose

Establishes how signs and planets influence (aspect) each other and each other's houses β€” two parallel systems (sign/triplicity-based full aspects, and planet-based graduated aspects) that nearly every later interpretive technique in this course will assume.

2. Connection Bridge

  • Builds on: Ch. 4 v.5 (Module 3, movable/fixed/dual classification).
  • Feeds forward into: Ch. 28 (Semester 2, reconciling the two systems); Ch. 37–44 (Semester 3, Yogas).

Bridge prompt: Before reading, write one sentence: what do you already assume "aspect" means in astrology, and where did that assumption come from?

3. Memorize Β· Understand Β· Apply

Memorize Understand Apply
Movable↔fixed (except adjacent), dual↔dual sign-aspect rule Why BPHS treats these as two separate systems rather than one refined system Identify which signs a given sign aspects
The 4-row graduated-aspect table (Saturn/Jupiter/Mars/others) Why Saturn/Jupiter/Mars's "special aspects" are really graduated, not binary Identify a planet's full, ΒΎ, Β½, and ΒΌ aspect houses

4. Homework β€” Practice and Understanding

(Closed-form items are self-check-only β€” no answers on this part of the page. Check your work against Β§9 Check Answers and Explanations below.)

Recall

R1. State the sign-aspect rule for movable, fixed, and dual signs. R2. Which three planets get graduated (not simple 7th-only) special aspects? R3. What house gets Saturn's full aspect? Jupiter's? Mars's? R4. State the general planetary-aspect rule (v.10), before graduation is applied.

Understanding

U1. Why might BPHS assign Mars a full aspect to the 4th/8th houses rather than the 7th (which every other planet gets fully)? U2. Explain the difference between Rashi Drishti (v.1–9) and Graha Drishti (v.10–15) β€” are they the same system described twice, or two different systems? U3. Explain what "one foot / two feet / three feet / full" means for a planet's aspect strength. U4. Explain why Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars are the only planets that don't get a full aspect on the 7th house.

Application

A1. Jupiter is placed in Taurus (treat Taurus as the 1st house). Name the house(s) receiving Jupiter's full aspect. A2. Cancer is a movable sign. Which three fixed signs does a planet in Cancer aspect, and which fixed sign is excluded (being adjacent)? A3. Gemini is a dual sign. Which signs does a planet in Gemini aspect? A4. Saturn is placed in Aries (treat Aries as the 1st house for this exercise). Using the graduated-aspect table, name the house(s) receiving Saturn's full aspect, ΒΎ aspect, Β½ aspect, and ΒΌ aspect. A5. A student claims: "Mars doesn't aspect the 7th house at all, only the 4th and 8th." Is this accurate per BPHS's own stated rule (v.14)? Correct the claim if needed.

Source Awareness

S1. Locate the exact verse(s) giving Jupiter's graduated aspect pattern. Give chapter and verse. S2. Locate the exact verse stating that BPHS teaches aspects "in two ways." Give chapter and verse. S3. Is the alternate aspect-diagram tradition (from the Ganesh Datta Pathaka edition) part of this course's primary source's own verse text, or a translator-noted variance from a different edition? S4. The translator notes an entirely different diagram tradition exists in another edition. Does this affect your confidence in the verse text itself (v.1–5, v.10–15), or only in how that specific visual aid is drawn?

Fill-in-the-Blank

F1. Movable signs aspect the three _ signs except the one _ to them. F2. Every planet aspects the 7th house at _ strength, except Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. F3. Saturn's full aspect falls on the _ and __ houses from its position.

Check Answers β€” Recall, Understanding, Application, Source Awareness, Fill-in-the-Blank, Matching

Recall

  • R1. Movable signs aspect the three fixed signs except the one adjacent (2nd from them); fixed signs aspect the three movable signs except the one adjacent (12th from them); dual signs aspect the other three dual signs, excluding themselves (v.1–5).
  • R2. Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars (v.11–15). Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus follow the flat 3rd/10th β†’ 5th/9th β†’ 4th/8th β†’ 7th(full) pattern instead.
  • R3. Saturn's full aspect: 3rd and 10th houses. Jupiter's full aspect: 5th and 9th houses. Mars's full aspect: 4th and 8th houses (v.11–15).
  • R4. Every planet aspects the 3rd/10th, 5th/9th, 4th/8th houses (at varying strength) and the 7th house from its own position (v.10).

Understanding

  • U1. BPHS states the rule (v.11–15) without giving its underlying rationale β€” no verse explains why each of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars gets its particular full-aspect house. Self-check: did you reason about the pattern honestly while labeling any explanation you offered as your own inference, rather than presenting it as something BPHS itself states?
  • U2. Two different systems β€” Rashi Drishti (sign-based, full aspects only, triplicity-dependent) and Graha Drishti (planet-based, graduated ¼–full strength by specific house). BPHS states plainly (v.16) these are "two ways," not one system restated.
  • U3. It expresses the planet's aspect strength at a given house as a fraction of full: ΒΌ (one foot), Β½ (two feet), ΒΎ (three feet), or full (4/4) β€” rather than a simple yes/no aspect.
  • U4. Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars each get their strongest ("full") aspect on a different house than the 7th (3rd/10th, 5th/9th, and 4th/8th respectively) β€” per BPHS's own graduated table, they still aspect the 7th, just at reduced (¼–¾) strength depending on the planet.

Application

  • A1. Jupiter in Taurus (reference = 1st house): full aspect = Virgo (5th), Capricorn (9th).
  • A2. Fixed signs aspected: Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus. Excluded (adjacent): Leo.
  • A3. Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces (the other three dual signs).
  • A4. Saturn in Aries (reference = 1st house): Full = Gemini (3rd), Capricorn (10th). ΒΎ = Libra (7th). Β½ = Cancer (4th), Scorpio (8th). ΒΌ = Leo (5th), Sagittarius (9th).
  • A5. Inaccurate. Per v.14, Mars aspects the 7th house too, at ΒΌ (one foot) strength β€” it is not zero, just the weakest of Mars's four aspected houses. Mars's full aspect is on the 4th/8th houses, but this does not mean the 7th is unaspected.

Source Awareness

  • S1. Ch. 9, v.13.
  • S2. Ch. 9, v.16.
  • S3. A translator-noted variance from a different edition (Ganesh Datta Pathaka's), explicitly named as such β€” not part of this course's primary source's own verse text, though the translator states it as a genuine alternate tradition, not an error.
  • S4. No β€” the alternate diagram tradition is a translator-noted editorial variance in a different published edition's illustration, not a variance in this course's own verse text (v.1–5, v.10–15). Self-check that your answer keeps these separate: the sign-aspect rule itself is unaffected; only how it's drawn varies between editions.

Fill-in-the-Blank

  • F1. fixed / adjacent
  • F2. full
  • F3. 3rd / 10th
