Exercise 5B β The Moon's Window. Draw or describe a simple 30-tithi timeline (New Moon β Full Moon β New Moon) and mark exactly where the malefic and benefic windows fall, per the translator's Notes on v.11. Then, if you know your own birth's lunar phase (or can estimate it from your birth date), find where your own Moon falls on that timeline β benefic window or malefic window? Note this; you'll revisit it in the Chart Clinic below.
Exercise 5C β Your Own Chart. If you know your own birth chart's planetary placements, list which of your planets fall into each benefic/malefic category (treat the Moon and Mercury carefully, using today's conditional rules). No interpretation yet β pure observation. You'll build on this in the Chart Clinic.
Exercise 5D β Simple Reasoning. Suppose you're told a chart has Mercury conjunct both Jupiter and Saturn simultaneously (a triple conjunction). Based only on v.11's text, what would you predict for Mercury's functional status β and is the text specific enough to give a definite answer, or does it leave this case ambiguous? If ambiguous, label it "Requires verification" rather than guessing.

- Rahu and Ketu have no physical body yet are treated as full grahas because of their predictive potency. Does this change how you think about what makes something "real" or "relevant" in a chart?
- Mercury's malefic/benefic status depends entirely on context (conjunction). What does this suggest about how rigidly BPHS's classifications should be applied in general?
- In one short paragraph, explain why "benefic" and "malefic" as BPHS defines them here are not fixed moral judgments (good planet/bad planet) but functional classifications β and why that distinction will matter once you start interpreting real charts.

Timeline: New Moon (tithi 0/30) β malefic window runs from dark-fortnight day 8 through bright-fortnight day 8 (straddling New Moon) β benefic window runs from bright-fortnight day 8 through dark-fortnight day 8 (straddling Full Moon). Your own Moon's placement has no fixed answer β self-check that you correctly located it on this timeline, not that it matches any particular result.
Β§5D β Simple Reasoning
Per the translator's Notes on v.11: "If conjoined with both types of planets he shows mixed results." The text is not ambiguous here β it directly addresses the mixed-conjunction case. Correct label: Translator commentary (this specific "mixed results" rule is in the Notes, not the verse itself β the verse only states the single-malefic-conjunction rule).
Next lesson: Ch. 3, verses 12β22 β planetary governance, deities, sex, primordial elements, caste, and guna. This resolves the "Requires verification" item flagged in Module 1 (the exact Ch. 3 Sloka 20/22 cross-reference).

Note on This Stage¶
You're testing the crudest level of the system right now β a single binary classification with no chart context (no house, no dignity, no aspect). Don't be surprised or discouraged if the match is weak or inconclusive; that's expected and will sharpen significantly by Lesson 4 (dignity) and further through Semester 2 (house judgment). The point of doing this now, imperfectly, is to start the habit of testing claims against known outcomes rather than accepting them on authority.
This is reviewed for reasoning quality, not for whether the "prediction" matched β a well-reasoned inconclusive result is more valuable at this stage than an overclaimed match.
