Module 4 — Locating Planets (Historical Method)

Module title: Locating Planets and the Ascendant — The Manual Method Chapters: Ch. 5 ("To Find Out Planetary Position") Corresponds to: S1-M4 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: matches the syllabus's original 1-lesson estimate — the first module in this course where the original estimate held without revision. Ch. 5 is dense (24½ verses of continuous manual astronomical arithmetic) but the syllabus's own label is accurate: this is reference-only, historical-method material, "largely superseded by modern software" (per 01 — Chapter Inventory). It earns thorough conceptual treatment and one fully worked example, not a multi-lesson technical deep-dive, per the course's Calculation Chapters policy.

Purpose

Chapter 5 teaches the pre-computer method for finding a birth chart's core data — planetary longitudes, the exact position of the Moon, the Ascendant (Lagna), the 10th House, and the remaining houses — entirely from an almanac (Pankti) and manual arithmetic in Ghatis, Palas, and Vipalas. No modern student needs to reproduce this to build a chart; software does it instantly and more accurately. But BPHS's own computational assumptions (what a "chart" fundamentally is — a set of longitudes anchored to a precise birth moment and place) are established here, and the chapter matters for exactly that reason: understanding what the numbers a chart-casting program hands you actually represent, and what could go wrong upstream of that output (wrong birth time, wrong Ayanamsha, wrong place data) that no software safeguards against.

This module is entirely self-contained arithmetically — its own worked example (a birth at Hapur, 2-6-1951) runs continuously through nearly the whole chapter, so this course uses BPHS's own numbers throughout rather than inventing any.

Module Objectives

By the end of this module I should be able to:

  • Explain what a Ghati/Pala/Vipala time system is and convert between it and clock time.
  • Identify the five things Chapter 5's method ultimately produces: a corrected planetary Pankti position, the Moon's exact longitude, the Ascendant, the 10th House, and the remaining 10 houses via trisection (Bhava-Sandhi method).
  • Explain, in outline, why each of these required a distinct sub-procedure in a pre-software era (planets move at different rates; the Moon needed a finer method than the Pankti table gave; the Ascendant depends on both time and terrestrial latitude via unequal sign-rising-times).
  • Trace the book's own Hapur worked example through each stage, confirming the arithmetic the translator presents.
  • State what modern chart-casting software is doing computationally in place of this manual method, and what assumptions (Ayanamsha choice, exact time/place accuracy) remain the student's responsibility regardless of software.

One lesson, not several: the chapter is arithmetically dense but conceptually a single continuous procedure (each step's output feeds the next), and BPHS's own worked example makes it teachable in one pass rather than needing separated sub-lessons.

  • Workbook: lighter on recall/matching (few Sanskrit terms carry forward as reusable vocabulary — most of this chapter's terminology, e.g. "Chaalana," "Bhayaata," "Kshepaka," is local to this one manual technique and not reused later in the course) and heavier on the Practical/Framework-Mapping section — tracing the book's own worked example step by step.
  • Homework: conceptual and source-location focused (why does the method need X step; where does BPHS state Y) rather than asking the student to reproduce the full multi-page Hapur calculation from scratch — reproducing one selected stage of it is enough to demonstrate understanding, consistent with this course's rule that manual arithmetic may be shortened when extremely repetitive.
  • Application exercise: abstract arithmetic practice on 1–2 isolated sub-steps (e.g., a Chaalana correction, a Kshepaka trisection step) using clearly-labelled invented numbers unrelated to any real chart — permitted under this course's calculation-chapter rules since this is explicitly abstract drill, not chart data.
  • Quiz: short, matching the narrow single-technique precedent set by Ch. 3 L6 and Ch. 4 L3 — recall of the five sub-procedures, understanding of why each is needed, one source-location item.

Chart Clinic Plan

  • Stage 1 (own natal chart), but adapted: this chapter does not produce a new interpretive chart factor to test against known life history the way earlier Chart Clinics did (dignity, relationships, sign profile). Its output — planetary positions and house cusps — is exactly what a modern chart-casting program already gives the student. The Chart Clinic for this lesson therefore asks the student to connect their own already-known D1 chart data to the manual method conceptually (which stage of Ch. 5's procedure produced their own Ascendant degree, in principle), not to re-derive it by hand.
  • No new Field Manual or Master Chart Analysis Procedure entry is warranted from this module — Ch. 5 doesn't add an interpretive rule, only the computational foundation beneath every rule already in use.

Module Test Plan

Module 4 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 4 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Modules 4 through 8 previously shared one combined cluster test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for any of these modules.
