Module 6 Review — Aspects of Signs and Planets¶
One-Page Summary¶
Chapter 9 is short (16 verses) but it teaches two genuinely separate systems for the same underlying idea — that signs, planets, and houses influence each other at a distance — and BPHS never merges them into one.
The first system (v.1–9), Rashi Drishti, is sign-based and depends on a sign's triplicity (movable/fixed/dual), the same classification learned back in Module 3 (Ch. 4 v.5). Movable signs aspect all three fixed signs except the one immediately adjacent to them; fixed signs return the favor toward movable signs, again excluding the adjacent one; dual signs simply aspect the other three dual signs. Planets inherit this pattern from whatever type of sign they occupy (v.4–5), and the translator's own worked example (an Aries-rising chart, diagram 00016.jpeg) shows exactly how that plays out for a full set of planets at once. Verses 7–9 then give this same rule a visual form — a compass-direction diagram of the twelve signs — and the translator explicitly discloses that a second published edition of BPHS (Ganesh Datta Pathaka's) draws that diagram differently, while stating plainly which version this course follows.
The second system (v.10–16), Graha Drishti, counts houses directly from a planet's own position rather than from sign triplicity: every planet aspects the 3rd/10th, 5th/9th, and 4th/8th houses (at varying strength) and the 7th house, all measured from itself. Verses 11–15 then graduate that rule into quarter-strength ("paada") steps, and — this is the detail easiest to lose — Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars each get their full aspect on a different house than the 7th (3rd/10th, 5th/9th, and 4th/8th respectively), while still aspecting the other listed houses, including the 7th, at reduced strength. Verse 16 then simply names both systems as valid ("spoken of in two ways") without stating which one governs when they might point in different directions — this course holds that question open and defers its practical resolution to Ch. 28 in Semester 2.
Why it matters for chart reading: aspect is one of the small set of concepts nearly every later technique in this course assumes already works — planet-to-planet influence, house judgment, and yoga formation all lean on knowing what "aspects what." Getting the mechanics of both systems right now, and resisting the temptation to collapse them into one simplified rule, is what makes that later material legible instead of a source of quiet confusion.

Common Mistakes¶
- Treating the graduated planetary aspects (Graha Drishti) as a refinement of the sign aspects (Rashi Drishti). They are two separate systems BPHS states are both valid (v.16), not one system described twice — don't merge them into a single mental rule.
- Assuming Saturn, Jupiter, or Mars simply "don't aspect" the 7th house. Per the graduated table (v.11–15), all three still aspect the 7th (and every other listed house) — just at reduced (¼–¾) strength rather than full. "Special aspect" means a different full-strength house, not an on/off exception.
- Applying the wrong exclusion logic across triplicities. Movable and fixed signs each exclude one specific adjacent sign from their aspect; dual signs instead exclude nothing adjacent — they simply aspect the other three dual signs outright. Don't carry the "except the adjacent one" clause over to the dual-sign rule.
- Reading the alternate (Ganesh Datta Pathaka) diagram as a contradiction inside this course's own source. It is a translator-disclosed variance from a different published edition of BPHS, not an inconsistency within this course's single source text — the translator states outright which version this course follows.
- Forgetting that the diagram is a visual restatement, not new content. The compass-direction diagrams (v.7–9) illustrate the same sign-aspect rule already given in words (v.1–5); don't treat the diagram as adding a separate rule to memorize.
