Why this lesson matters: every future house-by-house lesson (Semester 2) assumes the reader already knows, at minimum, what each house signifies — today is that index. It also gives the first general-purpose "is this house doing well or badly" rule the course will use repeatedly.

4. While Reading, Focus On...¶

Before you read, watch for: each house gets only a short list of significations here — resist the urge to over-interpret or expand beyond what's actually stated; Semester 2 does the expanding, not this lesson.
Important terms: Bhava (house), Avastha (planetary state, forward-referenced), the "evil houses" bracketed gloss (v.14–16).
Passages likely to be difficult: the translator's Notes flag two separate textual variant readings (5th house's "प्रबंधकम्" and 6th house's "मातुलान्तकशंकानां") from different published editions — read these as genuine, acknowledged textual variance, not errors in this course's own reading.
Key questions to hold: does the "evil houses" bracketed list in v.14–16's Notes (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th) match Ch. 8's own stated Trik-sthana definition (6th, 8th, 12th only)?
How this connects to earlier lessons: the house classification vocabulary from Ch. 8 (Module 5, Kendra/Trikona/Trik-sthana) is directly relevant to evaluating today's prosperity rule.

5. Guided Lesson Notes¶

5.1 The Twelve House Significations (v.2–13)¶

Before Ch. 13 hands you a rule for judging whether a house is doing well or badly, it first has to tell you what each house is actually about — and it does that house by house, in order. Explicitly stated in BPHS, the complete list:

As you read the verse text itself, you'll run into two spots where the translator had to make a judgment call between competing readings — worth knowing about now rather than being surprised by later. Translator commentary: the 5th house's "प्रबंधकम्" is translated here as "ability to manage affairs," following one commentator's reading, against another's "splendour of intellect" (both are given in the table above, since the verse pairs several terms together). And the 6th house's "मातुलान्तकशंकानां" is read as a single compound — "doubt about maternal uncle's death" — rather than as two separate significations, per the translator's own stated preference between two attested readings. Treat both as genuine, acknowledged editorial disagreement, not errors in this course's own reading.

Scope note: resist the urge to over-interpret this list — it's intentionally compact, not a full interpretive doctrine. Semester 2's Ch. 14–25 will each dedicate a full lesson (or more) to unpacking one house's complete effects; today's list is only the starting index those chapters will expand.

5.2 The House Prosperity/Affliction Rule (v.14–16)¶

Once you know what a house signifies, the next natural question is: how do you tell whether it's working well for the native or not? Explicitly stated in BPHS: a house prospers when it is occupied by or aspected by benefics or its own lord, or when its lord is in a good Avastha (state — e.g., youthful/awakened states) or placed in the 10th house. A house is afflicted — "loses" in the matters it signifies — when its lord is combust/destroyed, conjunct malefics, unaspected by benefics or its own lord, conjunct the lords of "evil houses," defeated in planetary war, or in a poor Avastha (old/dead/asleep).

Notice that Avastha does real work in this rule — it isn't decoration. Explicitly stated in BPHS, the translator's own Notes: "The 'avasthas' of the planets have been dealt in detail in Chapter 47." Hold that as an open thread rather than a gap to fill in now: this lesson does not teach what Avastha states actually are or how to determine them; that is Ch. 47's job, in Semester 2. You can apply the occupation/aspect half of today's rule immediately; the Avastha half waits.

A terminological note worth flagging, because it's the kind of thing that trips students up if it goes unnoticed: the translator's bracketed gloss of "evil houses" in v.14–16's Notes lists 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 12th — but Ch. 8 (Module 5, v.35) defined Trik-sthana specifically as the 6th, 8th, and 12th only, with the 3rd and 11th both classified as Upachaya (growth houses) instead. So which is it? Requires verification: the Sanskrit term behind this bracket ("त्रिकेशाद्यैः," roughly "trik-lords and others") itself contains "ādi" ("and others/etc."), which suggests the verse isn't offering a closed, precisely-bounded list in the first place — the translator's bracketed expansion to five specific houses looks like his own interpretive gloss, not a direct one-to-one restatement of a BPHS-defined term. Keep the two lists separate in your own mind rather than silently reconciling them; this course treats "evil houses" here as distinct from Ch. 8's Trik-sthana and flags the difference rather than papering over it.
