Homework is included in this Workbook. Complete the marked Homework sections before moving to the Quiz.

Homework β€” Practice and Understanding is on this page. Homework β€” Chart Observation and Application continues on this chapter's Application page.

1. Chapter Purpose

Six verses establish the dignity scale that the rest of BPHS constantly assumes: exaltation, debilitation, Mooltrikona, and own sign. This is the first Module 2 lesson with a genuine calculation skill and the first real Chart Clinic.

2. Connection Bridge

  • Builds on: nothing specific β€” a fresh system.
  • Feeds forward into: L5 (relationship-based dignity, for planets in neither friend/enemy/own/exalted/debilitated categories); Ch. 3 v.59–60 (result percentages by dignity); Ch. 29 (Shadbala's Sthānabala).

Bridge prompt: Before doing any calculation, write one sentence: what do you expect it will feel like to test a real technical rule against your own known chart, compared to the purely conceptual reasoning of Module 1?

3. Memorize Β· Understand Β· Apply

Memorize Understand Apply
All 7 exaltation signs + exact degrees Debilitation = 7th from exaltation, same degree (internal consistency check) Calculate dignity for any given planet/sign/degree
All 7 Mooltrikona ranges Mercury is the unique case: exaltation+Mooltrikona+own sign all in Virgo Apply the 5-step dignity procedure
The dignity hierarchy: exalted > Mooltrikona > own sign > neutral/friend/enemy (L5) > debilitated Run this on your own natal chart

4. Homework β€” Practice and Understanding

(Closed-form items are self-check-only β€” no answers on this part of the page. Check your work against Β§7 Check Answers and Explanations below.)

Recall

R1. What sign and degree is Mars exalted in? Debilitated in? R2. What is Jupiter's Mooltrikona range? R3. Which planet's Mooltrikona sign is the same as its exaltation sign? R4. List the dignity hierarchy from strongest to weakest (excluding the relationship-based tier from L5).

Understanding

U1. Why does BPHS place the debilitation sign exactly opposite (7th from) the exaltation sign, at the same degree, rather than some unrelated sign? U2. Explain, using only Mercury's case, why "own sign" and "Mooltrikona" are genuinely different dignities and not just two names for the same thing. U3. Explain the relationship between an exaltation sign/degree and its corresponding debilitation sign/degree, in your own words.

Application

A1. Determine the dignity (exalted / Mooltrikona / own sign / neither) for each of the following: Sun at Aries 8Β°; Moon at Taurus 15Β°; Mars at Aries 5Β°; Jupiter at Sagittarius 25Β°; Venus at Libra 12Β°; Saturn at Aquarius 25Β°. A2. A chart shows Jupiter at Cancer 5Β° exactly. What is Jupiter's dignity, and is this the strongest possible placement for Jupiter? Explain. A3. Determine the dignity: Saturn at Libra 20Β° exactly. Determine the dignity: Mars at Aries 20Β°.

Source Awareness

S1. Locate the exact verse(s) giving the exaltation/debilitation table. Give chapter and verse. S2. Locate the exact verse describing Mercury's exaltation/Mooltrikona/own-sign split within Virgo. Give chapter and verse. S3. Is the claim "debilitation is always the 7th sign from exaltation, at the same degree" explicitly stated as a single rule in one verse, or is it something you derive by comparing v.49–50's two rows yourself?

Fill-in-the-Blank

F1. Saturn is exalted in _ at _ degrees, and debilitated in _ at the same degree. F2. Mercury's Mooltrikona range within Virgo is _ to _ degrees. F3. The Moon's Mooltrikona sign is _, which is also her _ sign. F4. Venus's Mooltrikona range within Libra is 0Β° to _ degrees.

Matching

# Planet Letter Exaltation degree

3 Jupiter C 28Β°
Check Answers β€” Recall, Understanding, Application, Source Awareness, Fill-in-the-Blank, Matching

Recall

  • R1. Mars exalted Capricorn 28Β°; debilitated Cancer 28Β°.
  • R2. Sagittarius, 0°–10Β°.
  • R3. The Moon (Mooltrikona and exaltation both in Taurus, though her own sign is the separate sign Cancer).
  • R4. Exalted > Mooltrikona > own sign (SvakαΉ£etra) > [relationship-based tier, L5] > debilitated.

Understanding

  • U1. No fixed answer beyond what the text supports β€” self-check that your answer notices this is a stated internal pattern (7th sign, same degree) confirmed across every planet's row in v.49–50, worth treating as a reliable structural feature of the system.
  • U2. Mooltrikona is a specific degree-sub-range within (or adjacent to) a planet's own/exaltation sign, distinct from the rest of that sign classified as plain "own sign" β€” even where both fall in the same sign (Mercury), the verse explicitly divides Virgo into three separate zones (exaltation 0–15Β°, Mooltrikona 15–20Β°, own sign 20–30Β°), so they are not interchangeable labels for the same thing.
  • U3. The debilitation sign is always the 7th sign counted from the exaltation sign, at the same specific degree (e.g., Sun exalted Aries 10Β° β†’ debilitated Libra 10Β°).

Application

  • A1. Sun/Aries 8Β° = Exalted (within exaltation sign, near the 10Β° peak). Moon/Taurus 15Β° = Mooltrikona (within the 3–30Β° Mooltrikona range). Mars/Aries 5Β° = Mooltrikona (within the 0–12Β° range). Jupiter/Sagittarius 25Β° = Own sign (within the 10–30Β° range). Venus/Libra 12Β° = Mooltrikona (within the 0–15Β° range). Saturn/Aquarius 25Β° = Own sign (within the 20–30Β° range).
  • A2. Jupiter at Cancer 5Β° exactly = Exalted, at the deepest exaltation point β€” the strongest possible placement for Jupiter, since 5Β° is precisely its deepest-exaltation degree per v.49–50.
  • A3. Saturn/Libra 20Β° = Exalted, at the exact deepest exaltation point. Mars/Aries 20Β° = Own sign (within Aries's 12–30Β° own-sign range, past the 0–12Β° Mooltrikona zone).

Source Awareness

  • S1. Ch. 3, v.49–50.
  • S2. Ch. 3, v.52–53.
  • S3. It is not stated as a single explicit rule in one verse β€” it is a pattern you derive yourself by comparing the exaltation and debilitation rows of v.49–50. Both facts are individually stated by BPHS, and the 7th-sign/same-degree relationship is a student-observed internal consistency check β€” label it "Interpretation inferred from surrounding BPHS material" if asked to classify it.

Fill-in-the-Blank

  • F1. Libra / 20 / Aries
  • F2. 15 / 20
  • F3. Taurus / exaltation
  • F4. 15
