1. Chapter Purpose¶
The final stretch of Ch. 3: three distinct computed-point systems (Upagrahas, Gulika, Pranapada), each producing a chart position used in later judgment (mainly Ch. 27, Semester 2).

Understanding
- U1. If the calculation is done correctly, the check always passes — it's a built-in arithmetic safeguard (the five-step chain and the "undo" back to the Sun's position are mathematically linked). If your answer doesn't pass, you've made an arithmetic error somewhere in the chain and should redo the calculation rather than trust the result.
- U2. It shares its name with the graha Ketu (the lunar node, taught in L1), but this is a differently-computed shadow point from an unrelated formula — confusing if not tracked carefully, since BPHS itself doesn't disambiguate the name in the verse text. Label it "chain-Ketu" or similar in your own notes.
- U3. Day and night durations are generally unequal (except at the equinoxes) and are governed by different portion-lord sequences per the translator's method — a single formula couldn't correctly handle both without this split.
- U4. Most astrologers treat Gulika and Mandi as the same point; Sarvartha Chintamani (an outside source cited by the translator) treats them as genuinely distinct, with a different Dhruvanka table. BPHS's own verse (v.66–70) only defines the Saturn-portion method for Gulika and doesn't itself introduce "Mandi" — that term and distinction is translator-supplied.
