• Before you read, watch for: this technique requires four inputs you may not have calculated before (Saturn's house-spashta, Gulika's house-spashta, the Lagna-spashta, the 9th-house-spashta) — the book supplies a complete worked numerical example immediately after the verse, which is your primary teaching tool.
• Important terms: Nisheka Lagna, Garbhadhāna (conception), spashta (exact/precise longitude), "invisible half."
• Passages likely to be difficult: the "invisible half" adjustment (v.28–29) is a conditional step that doesn't apply to every chart — read carefully to see exactly when it triggers.
• Key questions to hold: what does BPHS actually claim you can learn from a correctly computed Nisheka Lagna — and what would be overclaiming?
• How this connects to earlier lessons: requires Gulika (Module 2, Ch. 3 v.66–70) as a direct input — a good test of whether that calculation was retained.

5.1 The Calculation (v.25–29)

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.25–27: having known the natal Ascendant, the astrologer determines the Nisheka Lagna (the Ascendant at the moment of conception). Method:

1. Find the house-difference between Saturn's position and Gulika's (Mandi's) position.
2. Find the house-difference between the Ascendant and the 9th house.
3. Add these two differences together.
4. The result, read as signs/degrees/minutes/seconds, is interpreted as months/days/etc. elapsed before birth — i.e., counting backward from birth to conception.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.28–29, a conditional adjustment: if the Ascendant lord is in the "invisible half" (the six houses counted anti-clockwise from the Ascendant — i.e., houses 12 through 7), the degrees the Moon has already traversed in her current sign are added to the result from steps 1–3 above.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.29–30: from the resulting Nisheka Lagna, the astrologer can speak to (a) good/bad effects experienced by the native in the womb, and (b) — "with one's imagination" (per the translator's rendering) — the longevity/wellbeing of the native's parents.

Caution: v.30's own phrasing ("svakalpanāt," rendered "with one's imagination") reads as BPHS itself flagging this second application (parental longevity) as more interpretive/inferential than the direct conception-timing calculation — worth holding this claim at a lower confidence than the core calculation itself.

5.2 The Worked Example (Notes following v.30)

Interpretation given: 9 signs → 9 months; 2° → 2 days; the remaining 55′29″ converts to a time-of-day figure (55 ghati 29 pala) — i.e., conception occurred approximately 9 months, 2 days before birth, at 55 ghati 29 pala (elapsed from that day's sunrise, by the same ghati-pala convention used throughout this course).

Procedural organization for learning — the conversion procedure, stated plainly as a checklist:

1. Compute Saturn − Gulika (house-spashta difference); add 12 signs to the minuend first if it would otherwise go negative.
2. Compute (9th house) − (Lagna) (house-spashta difference); same negative-avoidance rule.
3. Add both differences together, carrying signs/degrees/minutes/seconds as needed.
4. If the Ascendant lord is in the invisible half (houses 12–7 counted anticlockwise from Lagna), add the Moon's traversed degrees in her sign to the total.
5. Read the result as: signs → months, degrees → days, minutes/seconds → time-of-day (ghati/pala).
