1. Chapter Purpose¶
Chapter 5 is BPHS's own explanation of how a birth chart's raw numbers β planetary longitudes, the Moon's exact position, the Ascendant, and all twelve house cusps β were derived by hand from an almanac and a stopwatch, before any software existed to do it instantly. It matters not because a modern student needs to reproduce it, but because it's the only place BPHS defines what a chart's numbers actually represent and depend on.

Understanding
- U1. The almanac (Pankti) only lists planetary positions at fixed reference moments roughly every 8 days at local midnight β a birth almost never occurs exactly then, so the listed positions must be corrected (Chaalana) forward or backward to the exact birth moment (Ishta Kaala) using each planet's own daily motion.
- U2. The Moon moves fast enough, and unevenly enough across her orbit, that the simple Chaalana correction (adequate for the slower-moving Pankti-listed planets) wasn't considered precise enough β a separate Nakshatra-based refinement (how much of the current Nakshatra has been traversed vs. its full span) was used instead.
- U3. Sign-rising-time isn't a flat 30Β° of clock-time because the ecliptic meets the horizon at a changing angle as different signs rise β some signs rise faster, some slower. Swodaya is a sign's rising-time at the birthplace's own latitude, used for the Ascendant (a horizon phenomenon); Lankodaya is a sign's rising-time at the equator (zero latitude), used as a fixed reference for the 10th House (a meridian/culmination phenomenon) instead.
- U4. Accept any answer that connects Ayanamsha choice (or birth-time/place accuracy) to a real risk that software conceals by default β e.g., noting that two different software programs with different default Ayanamsha settings will silently produce different sidereal longitudes for the same exact birth data, just as BPHS's own SaayanaβNirayana conversion step was a deliberate, visible arithmetic step rather than an invisible default.
