2. How Today's Lesson Fits Into Complete Chart Analysis

Why this lesson matters: this lesson gives you the individual reference profile for each sign — the material you'll actually look up when a specific sign is in play (as Ascendant, as a house, as a planet's placement). It's also a lesson in reading discipline: several signs in this translation have incomplete profiles, and the honest response is to say so, not to quietly fill gaps from outside knowledge.

4. While Reading, Focus On...

• Before you read, watch for: the descriptions are terse and formulaic, sign after sign — read for the pattern (complexion → body/feet → day/night strength → direction/residence → caste → guna → rising type → lord), and notice immediately when a sign's verse skips one of these compared to its neighbors.
• Important terms: Prishthodaya/Shirshodaya/Ubhayodaya (rising with back/head/both).
• Passages likely to be difficult: Libra and Scorpio share one combined verse group (v.15–16½) — read carefully to keep their separate attributes straight.
• Key questions to hold: does every sign actually get a complete profile, or are there real gaps? (There are — see §5.2 below, logged internally as a genuine source gap rather than guessed at.)

Resist the pull to fill them from outside Jyotish knowledge; the honest answer is "not stated," and that discipline is really what this lesson is teaching.

5.2 Reading the Gaps Honestly

This translation does not give a complete nine-attribute profile for every sign — worth knowing going in, since the temptation to quietly patch a gap is strongest exactly when you aren't expecting one. Confirmed gaps, verified by direct re-reading:

• Gemini — no caste or guna stated (v.9–9½).
• Cancer — no direction stated (v.10–11).
• Scorpio — no guna stated, and no rising type stated (v.15–16½) — this last one is notable because every other one of the 12 signs has an explicit rising-type term, making Scorpio the sole exception. Logged internally as a genuine source gap: most likely a translation/rendering gap rather than a deliberate omission, but not guessed at here.
• Capricorn — no caste stated (v.19–20).
• Pisces — no complexion stated (v.22–24).

A related methodological note — why "element" is not a column above: several individual sign-descriptions (v.6–24) mention an element in passing (e.g., Taurus "element earth," Gemini "element air," Cancer "element water," Capricorn "element earth"), but these scattered mentions are incomplete (not every sign gets one) and at least one appears to conflict with L1's clean dhātu-triplicity table: Virgo's individual description (v.13–14) states "its element is air," but v.5 places Virgo in the windy (Vāta) triplicity group with Taurus and Capricorn — both of which are independently confirmed "earth" in their own individual descriptions. A triplicity group would be expected to share one element consistently. This looks like a genuine inconsistency between v.5's systematic table and v.13–14's individual phrasing (possibly "prabhanjini," a windy-natured descriptor, being rendered as "element is air" inconsistently across signs) rather than a deliberate distinction BPHS is drawing. This course treats v.5's dhātu-triplicity table (Lesson 1) as the authoritative, systematic source for sign-element association, and does not build a separate "element" column from the individual descriptions, precisely to avoid presenting an internally inconsistent table as if it were settled. Flagged here rather than silently worked around.

Treat this whole section as practice, not a flaw to route around — procedural organization for learning is exactly the discipline this course keeps returning to: say "not stated" plainly rather than reaching for a plausible-sounding fill-in.

5.3 The Two Split-Nature Signs

Two signs stand out from the other ten. Explicitly stated in BPHS, they're given an unusual two-part physical nature within the same verse:

• Sagittarius (v.17–18½): biped for the first 15°, quadruped for the remaining 15°.
• Capricorn (v.19–20): quadruped in the first half, footless in the second half, "glides in water."

Notice that no other sign in this chapter receives a degree-based internal split like this — worth remembering as a distinguishing feature of these two specifically, and, procedural organization for learning flags, a small reminder that "a sign's nature" isn't always a single uniform statement even within BPHS's own terms.

5.4 Cross-Check Against Module 2

Here's a useful exercise built into the material itself. It's labeled interpretation inferred from surrounding BPHS material, since it isn't a new claim BPHS states outright but a verification you can run yourself: today's Lord column should exactly match Module 2's own-sign dignity assignments (Ch. 3 v.49–54). Checking it directly:

Full agreement across the board — a genuine internal consistency check spanning two different chapters, and it passes.

5.5 Practical Notes on Rising Type and Timing (from v.24's closing Notes)

One more layer, drawn from translator commentary following v.24: signs strong in night (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn) favor night journeys; day-strong signs favor daytime activity and are linked to vigor and courage, while night-strong signs lean toward gracefulness, softness, and secrecy when both the Ascendant and its lord are night-strong. Rising type itself affects both the quality and the timing of results: head-rising (Shirshodaya) signs give results sooner and, unoccupied, lean auspicious; back-rising (Prishthodaya) signs give results later and, unoccupied, lean inauspicious; both-rising (Ubhayodaya, i.e., Pisces) gives mixed timing and effect. Keep the qualifier in view, though — this describes an unoccupied sign's own tendency, and a planet actually present changes the picture (per L1's Kalapurusha-affliction logic and Module 2's dignity/relationship system). Don't read rising-type as an override of a planet's own condition.
