1. Chapter Purpose¶
Three relationship systems (natural, temporary, compound) and a synthesis table (Ratio of Effects) that combines relationship with L4's dignity into one percentage score — the first fully synthetic technique in this module.
2. Connection Bridge¶
- Builds on: L4 (dignity) — required for the Ratio of Effects table.
- Feeds forward into: Ch. 29 (Shadbala, a fuller version of this synthesis); Ch. 36–44 (Yogas, many requiring specific relationship states).
Bridge prompt: The Moon considers Mercury a friend, but Mercury considers the Moon an enemy (§5.1). Before continuing, write one sentence: why might a system built around each planet's own Mooltrikona sign produce non-mutual relationships, rather than a flaw in the system?

A1. Sun is in Aries; Saturn is in Cancer (the 4th sign from Aries). What is Saturn's temporary relationship to the Sun? Combine this with their natural relationship (from the §5.1 table) to determine their compound relationship. A2. A planet is exalted. Separately, you also happen to know the exaltation sign's lord is a great friend (Adhimitra) of this planet. Does the friendly-sign fact change the Ratio of Effects result at all? Explain using the priority order from §5.4. A3. A malefic planet is in its debilitation sign. Per the inauspicious effects table, what percentage of its malefic effect is produced? Is this higher or lower than you might intuitively expect, and why does the text score it this way?

No fixed answer beyond what the text supports — self-check that your response notes natural relationship is fixed for every chart, while temporary relationship changes chart to chart based on actual placement; without the temporary layer, the system would miss how planets specifically relate in one real chart, which is what the compound and Ratio of Effects systems actually need.
- U2. The Moon lists Mercury as a friend; Mercury lists the Moon as an enemy. Not an error — each planet's relationship is calculated independently, counting houses from its own Mooltrikona sign, so the results need not be mutual.
- U3. Dignity (L4) and relationship (today) alone each give a partial picture; the Ratio of Effects table is the first place BPHS assigns an actual quantified percentage by combining them into a single priority-ordered scale, moving from qualitative description toward a genuinely comparable strength score.
- U4. Exaltation first, then Mooltrikona, then own sign; only if none of these apply, check the occupied sign's lord's compound relationship (friend/neutral/enemy) to the planet.
Application
- A1. Saturn in Cancer is in the 4th house from Aries (Sun's sign) → temporary friend (v.56). Natural relationship Sun→Saturn = enemy (§5.1 table). Compound: Enemy + Friend = Neutral.
- A2. If a planet is exalted, per the priority order (§5.4) that is checked first and immediately yields 100%/0% — the friendly-sign fact is irrelevant once exaltation is established; the hierarchy stops at the first applicable tier and never reaches the relationship-based tiers at all.
- A3. Per the inauspicious table, enemy/debilitated = 100% of the malefic effect — higher than intuition might suggest for a "weak" placement, but the text scores debilitation/enemy placement as producing the maximum inauspicious result, not a diminished one; a malefic planet's harmful potential is fully expressed exactly when it's badly placed.
