Module 4 Review — Locating Planets (Historical Method)¶

Chapter 5 answers a question the course has quietly assumed since Module 1: where do a chart's actual numbers — planetary longitudes, the Ascendant, the twelve house cusps — actually come from? Lesson 1 walks through BPHS's own five-stage manual method for producing them entirely by hand, before any chart-casting software existed. Stage 1 corrects an almanac's (Pankti) fixed-moment planetary positions to the exact birth moment (Ishta Kaala), using a Yaata (subtract) / Aishya (add) arithmetic correction called Chaalana, scaled to each planet's own daily motion — with the rule reversing for retrograde planets. Stage 2 refines the Moon's position specifically, because her motion is fast and uneven enough that the Chaalana correction alone wasn't considered precise enough for her — a separate Nakshatra-based method (Bhayaata/Bhabhoga) is used instead. Stage 3 derives the Ascendant from the Sun's Ayanamsha-corrected position, the birthplace's measured latitude (encoded as Palbha, a midday shadow-length), and each sign's own local rising-time (Swodaya) — because signs do not rise in equal 30°-of-time slices, the ecliptic meets the horizon at a changing angle. Stage 4 derives the 10th House by a structurally parallel procedure keyed to culmination (the meridian) rather than the horizon, using equatorial rising-times (Lankodaya) instead of local ones. Stage 5 derives the remaining ten house cusps by trisecting the arcs between the Ascendant and the 10th House (the Kshepaka/Bhava-Sandhi method) — no further reference to time is needed once those two cusps are known. BPHS carries one continuous worked example — a birth at Hapur, 2-6-1951 — through every stage, giving the student real numbers to check rather than an abstract description, and even shows two independent routes (traversed vs. to-be-traversed solar degrees) converging on the same final Ascendant as an internal consistency check. The lesson closes by naming what modern chart-casting software does instead — ephemeris-based longitudes and a chosen house system, applied automatically to whatever time, place, and Ayanamsha the user supplies — and what it does not protect against: a wrong birth time, a wrong place, or an unnoticed default Ayanamsha setting, none of which software will visibly flag the way the manual method's every-step arithmetic would.
Why it matters for chart reading: this is reference-only material in the sense that no student needs to reproduce it by hand again in this course — but it is the one chapter that defines what every later lesson's raw inputs (a Lagna, twelve house cusps, a set of planetary longitudes) actually represent and depend on. Every interpretive rule this course teaches from here forward is applied to data whose origin this chapter explains. A silent input error upstream — wrong time, wrong place, wrong Ayanamsha — would propagate into every subsequent lesson's conclusions, with no later lesson positioned to detect it.

Common Mistakes¶
- Mixing up Yaata (subtract) and Aishya (add). Which one applies depends on whether Ishta Kaala falls before or after Pankti Kaala — and the rule fully reverses for retrograde planets (v.2–4). Applying the direct-motion rule to a retrograde planet by habit is the single most flagged error point in the chapter itself.
- Losing track of which unit a figure is in. The chapter moves between Ghati/Pala/Vipala (elapsed time), Angul/Vyangul (shadow-length), and degrees/minutes/seconds (final positions) without restating units at every line — carrying a Pala value forward as if it were a Vipala (or vice versa) silently breaks the arithmetic.
- Confusing Saayana and Nirayana positions mid-procedure. The method computes in Saayana (tropical) terms throughout and converts to Nirayana (sidereal, Ayanamsha-corrected) only at the final step — treating an intermediate Saayana figure as if it were already Nirayana produces a wrong answer that still looks plausible.
- Misidentifying the Ashuddha sign. The entire final Ascendant or 10th House answer depends on correctly locating the sign where the running subtraction of Swodaya or Lankodaya values first goes negative — stopping one sign early or late invalidates the result.
- Treating Swodaya and Lankodaya as interchangeable. They are structurally parallel but conceptually distinct: Swodaya is local-latitude rising-time (for the Ascendant, a horizon phenomenon), Lankodaya is equatorial rising-time (for the 10th House, a meridian/culmination phenomenon). Using one where the other belongs breaks the geometry the method depends on.
- Silently resolving the Stage 2 numeric inconsistency instead of noting it. BPHS's own worked example shows the corrected Sun position as both "1s 18°8′12″" and "1s 18°8′22″" in different parts of the same passage. The lesson flags this rather than picking one value for the student — treating it as settled without checking which figure the chapter's own later arithmetic actually carries forward is exactly the kind of silent "fix" this course's source discipline warns against.
- Assuming this chapter is a skill to redo on every future chart. It is historical/reference material explaining what a chart's numbers represent and where software's shortcuts sit in relation to the traditional method — not a hand-calculation the student is expected to repeat going forward.
