5. Homework — Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Classification / calculation.
Exercise 5A — Natural Relationship Lookup. Using the §5.1 table, state whether each pair is naturally friend, enemy, or neutral — checked in both directions (remember, not always mutual): Moon↔Mercury; Sun↔Mars; Venus↔Saturn; Jupiter↔Saturn.
Exercise 5B — Temporary Relationship Calculation. Given the following hypothetical positions, calculate each planet's temporary relationship to the Sun (Sun is in Aries): Mars in Cancer; Jupiter in Pisces; Saturn in Libra.
Exercise 5C — Compound Relationship. Combine your 5A (natural) and 5B (temporary, treating Mars/Jupiter/Saturn as if they were the same planets from 5A where applicable) results to determine compound relationships. Show your reasoning.
Exercise 5D — Ratio of Effects. A benefic planet is in its own sign (not exalted, not Mooltrikona). What percentage of its auspicious effect does it produce, per the priority-order hierarchy in Lesson §5.4?
Exercise 5E — Your Own Chart. If you know your own chart, calculate the natural, temporary, and compound relationship between your Ascendant lord and your Moon. Record the result — no interpretation yet. Then, using your own chart's actual planetary positions, calculate the compound relationship between your Ascendant lord and at least one other planet — you'll use this in the Chart Clinic below.

- The Ratio of Effects table treats the same dignity/relationship state as producing opposite percentages for auspicious vs. inauspicious effects (e.g., exaltation = 100% good, 0% bad). What does this symmetry imply about how BPHS conceives of a planet's "strength" — is strength morally neutral, or does the text bake in an assumption that strong = good?
- You've now met three separate scoring frameworks in this module: benefic/malefic (L1), guna (L2), and dignity+relationship (L4–L5). Are these fully independent, or do you suspect they'll turn out to be correlated once you have more data (later chapters)? Note your prediction — you can check it later.
- In one paragraph, explain why the Ratio of Effects table (v.59–60) represents a genuine synthesis rather than just "one more fact to memorize" — connect it explicitly to both L4 and today's material.

§5C — Compound Relationship
- Mars: natural (Sun→Mars)=friend + temporary=friend → Great friend (Adhimitra).
- Jupiter: natural (Sun→Jupiter)=friend + temporary=friend → Great friend (Adhimitra).
- Saturn: natural (Sun→Saturn)=enemy + temporary=enemy → Great enemy (Adhishatru).
§5D — Ratio of Effects
Own sign (not exalted, not Mooltrikona) = 50% auspicious effect, per the priority-order hierarchy (§5.4, tier 3).

Step 0 — Calculate¶
Pick two planets in your own chart whose combined significations (Lesson 2) relate to something specific you know about your life (e.g., Moon and Mercury together might relate to communication about emotional matters). Calculate:
- Their natural relationship (both directions — check for asymmetry).
- Their temporary relationship (from actual chart positions).
- Their compound (5-fold) relationship.
- Using Lesson 5 §5.4's priority order, the Ratio of Effects percentage for one of the two planets, based on its actual sign placement.
