Module 8 — Yoga Karakas

Module title: Yoga Karakas — Functional Benefic/Malefic Classification (Semester 1 Capstone) Chapters: Ch. 36 ("Yoga Karakas") — moved up from its print position per 02 — Course Syllabus, since it is substantively the chapter that teaches functional benefic/malefic classification by ascendant, the exact skill Semester 1's outcome statement requires. Corresponds to: S1-M8 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: the syllabus estimated 1 lesson. Once read in full, Ch. 36 turned out to contain two genuinely distinct bodies of material — a general theory of how house lordship determines a planet's functional nature (v.1–17), and a complete, independently-usable ascendant-by-ascendant reference table for all twelve rising signs (v.18–46), including a real illustrative chart. This is revised to 2 lessons, consistent with the growth pattern every densely-packed module in this course has shown once actually read (Modules 2, 3, 5). Modules 4, 6, and 7 held at their original 1-lesson estimates because those chapters were genuinely compact — Ch. 36 is not.

Purpose

This is Semester 1's capstone chapter: the single technique most responsible for turning "benefic/malefic" from a fixed, natural-only classification (Module 2, Ch. 3 v.11) into a chart-specific, ascendant-dependent judgment — the actual working method professional Jyotish practice depends on. A planet's natural disposition (Jupiter is naturally benefic) is only the starting point; its functional disposition (what houses it rules for this specific ascendant) can override or modify that natural tendency entirely, sometimes completely reversing it (a natural malefic like Mars becoming a Raja Yoga Karaka for Cancer and Leo ascendants; a natural benefic like Jupiter losing its beneficence as a double-angle-lord for Gemini and Virgo).

Two things this module resolves or flags, found while reading the full chapter

  1. The Rahu/Ketu own-sign question — BPHS's own v.16 gives Rahu and Ketu a conjunction/occupation-based effects rule rather than a sign-lordship rule, and the translator explicitly reports a cross-textual doctrinal disagreement about whether these nodes have own signs at all. Logged as Decision Journal Entry 9 — this course does not assign Rahu/Ketu an own sign anywhere, consistent with their absence from Module 2's dignity tables (Ch. 3 v.49–54).
  2. A real illustrative chart — the Gemini-ascendant Notes (v.26) include an actual named individual's horoscope (Shri Jagpal Singh, born 10/11-8-1940, near Hapur) with a real biographical narrative illustrating a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in the 11th house. The chart diagram (00056.jpeg) was verified directly against the EPUB — genuine, not fabricated. This is a real BPHS-published example, not student data, and is used here strictly as the book's own illustration, not adopted as this course's reference-chart-library material (that remains a separate, deliberate decision per 02 — Course Syllabus's Reference Chart Library section, not to be made speculatively here).

Module Objectives

By the end of this module I should be able to:

  • Explain the four-tier house-lordship framework (Kendra lords lose their natural nature; Trikona lords are always auspicious; Trishadaya [3rd/6th/11th] lords are always inauspicious; Parashraya [12th/2nd/8th] lords give effects by association) and apply it to any ascendant.
  • State the natural benefic/malefic hierarchy (Jupiter, Venus > Moon > Mercury [neutral] > Sun, Saturn, Mars) and the Moon's waxing/waning-based strength scale (Paksha Bala).
  • Identify the conditions that create a Yoga Karaka (angle-trine exchange, conjunction, mutual aspect, or single-planet dual angle+trine lordship) and the conditions that block one (trishadaya co-lordship).
  • Reproduce, for any of the twelve ascendants, BPHS's own stated functional benefic/malefic/Yoga-Karaka/Maraka (killer) classification — the practical reference skill this module exists to build.

Lessons in This Module

Lesson File BPHS content Verses Printed page
Lesson 1 Lesson S01-M08-L01: Yoga Karakas — General Principles House-lordship theory, natural benefic/malefic hierarchy, Yoga Karaka formation rules, Rahu/Ketu Ch.36 v.1–17 473
Lesson 2 Lesson S01-M08-L02: Yoga Karakas by Ascendant — The Twelve-Sign Reference Ascendant-by-ascendant reference for all 12 rising signs, including the verified Gemini-ascendant illustrative chart Ch.36 v.18–46 473

Workbook / Homework / Application / Quiz Plan

  • Lesson 1: standard set, theory-and-reasoning weighted — the four-tier framework and Yoga Karaka conditions are the kind of material that rewards explanation, not just recall.
  • Lesson 2: heavier than a typical lesson — this is the single most-referenced reference table in the whole course going forward. Workbook and homework include a full 12-ascendant recall/reproduction drill; application exercise uses the student's own ascendant plus at least one other, to test transfer rather than memorization of one case.

Chart Clinic Plan

Stage 1 — a strong, natural fit. The student's own ascendant's Yoga Karaka/malefic/Maraka classification is directly testable against known life outcomes (career highs tied to Yoga Karaka planet's dasha, difficulties tied to Maraka dashas, etc.) — this is exactly the kind of same-moment, structurally stable factor Stage 1 clinics are designed for.

Module Test Plan

Module 8 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 8 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Modules 4 through 8 previously shared one combined cluster test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for any of these modules.

Mastery Requirements

  • Both lessons' mastery checks passed
  • Master Glossary updated (Kendra/Trikona/Trishadaya/Parashraya lordship terms, Yoga Karaka, Maraka, Paksha Bala)
  • Research Journal entries made (one per lesson)
  • Chart Clinic reasoning submitted and critiqued for both lessons
  • BPHS Field Manual updated — this module is a strong Field Manual source (see completion report)

Source References (whole module)

  • Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1 (Girish Chand Sharma translation, Sagar Publications), Volume 1, Chapter 36 ("Yoga Karakas"), verses 1–46. Printed-page anchor: chapter start, page 473 (per 01 — Chapter Inventory).
  • Diagram 00056.jpeg (the Gemini-ascendant illustrative chart, v.26's Notes) verified directly against the EPUB — genuine, confirmed matching the text's own description.
