Module 1 — Cosmology and the Divine Origin of the Grahas¶
Module title: Foundations of Creation — Why the Planets Can Signify a Life Chapters: Volume 1, Ch. 1 ("The Creation") and Ch. 2 ("Great Incarnations of the Lord") Corresponds to: S1-M1 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: 2 lessons, paced by content, not by calendar (per this course's standing pacing philosophy). Ch. 1 is short in verse count (24 verses) but dense — it compresses Vedic cosmology and the Sankhya evolution scheme into one chapter and carries two substantial translator's-notes blocks. Ch. 2 is more straightforward (13 verses, one direct teaching). Each gets its own full lesson; neither is padded or rushed to fit a week.
Purpose¶
Parashara does not open BPHS with a single planet, sign, or technique. He opens with the origin of the universe. This module exists to make sure that choice is understood, not skipped past. Everything taught for the rest of the course — planetary nature, house judgment, yogas, dashas — silently assumes one premise: the grahas are not inert physical bodies but carry a predominance of Paramātmā-aṁśa (a portion of the Supreme Consciousness). That is why a chart can describe a life at all. Module 1 establishes that premise (Ch. 1) and then makes it concrete by naming which graha carries which divine incarnation (Ch. 2) — the first move from abstract philosophy to planet-specific fact.
Module Objectives¶
By the end of this module I should be able to:
- Explain, in my own words and without the book open, why BPHS opens with a creation narrative instead of a technique, and what a student loses by skipping Chapter 1.
- Identify the three divisions (skandhas) of Jyotisha and state which one BPHS itself calls foremost.
- Explain the distinction between jīvātmā-aṁśa and paramātmā-aṁśa, and state which predominates in the grahas — and why that classification is the reason a planet can "signify" anything in a life.
- Trace the Sānkhya evolution chain from Puruṣa/Prakṛti down to the Pañca Mahābhūta, in the correct order, using the translator's own Ch. 1 notes.
- Identify, from memory, which graha corresponds to which avatāra (all nine pairings).
- Distinguish the four Pūrṇa (complete) avatāras from the five that carry a jīvāṁśa admixture, and name the grahas each group maps to.
- Classify a given statement about Ch. 1–2 content using the course's source-labeling system (Explicit / Translator commentary / Procedural / Inferred / Requires verification / Not located).
- Locate a specific verse in Ch. 1 or Ch. 2 given a claim, and cite it correctly (chapter, verse number).
Orientation (read this once, before Lesson 1)¶
Which files are the source, and why: two volumes, one edition (Girish Chand Sharma / Sagar Publications), EPUB + a Markdown text extraction of that same EPUB. No PDF exists for this edition, so citations never carry a "PDF page." Printed-page citations are chapter-start only.

Two persistent tools, both opened by the existing Ch. 1 workbook and continued for the rest of the course:
- Master Glossary — one running Sanskrit-term table across the whole course, not reset per chapter. New terms are appended, never duplicated.
- Running Chart Lab — a personal notebook (yours, outside this repository) where you record the working assumptions you're carrying into future chart reading, dated, and test them against later material.
How a lesson's documents fit together: each lesson = guided notes (this repo) → workbook (produce answers, no key) → homework (apply outward) → application exercise (observe/classify, not yet full interpretation) → quiz (self-check against a separate answer key in the course's answer keys). Nothing except reflection/journal prompts is ever answered inside a student-facing file.

(Correction: an earlier draft of this course's Module 1 outline stated Ch. 1 as "verses 1–46." That was wrong — verified directly against the source text, Ch. 1 runs verses 1–24, followed by two translator's-notes blocks, then Ch. 2 begins immediately. Corrected here; noted so the error doesn't propagate.)

Its one deviation (an embedded self-check key) stays as-is; it is not the pattern for anything built new. - Lesson 2: a new workbook, Lesson S01-M01-L02: Great Incarnations of the Lord — Workbook, built from the course's internal workbook template, continuing (not restarting) the Master Glossary and Running Chart Lab opened in Lesson 1. No answers embedded — self-check against the course's answer keys.
Homework Plan¶
One homework file per lesson (a per-lesson homework file), each following the course's internal homework template: reading review, short-answer, source-location, and a written-reflection item connecting the lesson to the module's larger premise. No calculation items — neither chapter involves computation.
Application Plan¶
Both lessons are pre-technical (no planetary positions, no chart yet), so application here means observation, classification, and recognition — not interpretation, per your standing instruction. Concretely:
- Lesson 1: a source-classification exercise (label real example statements by the correct citation category) plus the existing workbook's own Guna Map / Running Chart Lab exercise (§10).
- Lesson 2: a graha–avatāra classification exercise (sort the nine pairings into Pūrṇa vs. Amsa, then justify from the verse text).
Neither asks for interpretation of an actual horoscope — that begins once planetary identity (Ch. 3) is established.
Quiz & Module Test Plan¶
- One quiz per lesson (
Assessments/Quizzes/), each ~8–10 items across recall / understanding / application / source-awareness. - One cumulative Module Test (
Assessments/Module_Tests/) after both lessons, testing whether Ch. 1 and Ch. 2 have been integrated together (not just recalled separately) — e.g., explaining how Ch. 2's specific graha–avatāra facts are a direct instance of Ch. 1's abstract paramātmā-aṁśa claim. - All answer keys live in the course's answer keys, never in the quiz/test files themselves.

Open Verification Item — RESOLVED in Module 2, Lesson 2¶
The existing Ch. 1 workbook's Connection Bridge cites "Ch. 3, shlokas ~20 and ~22" approximately. Ch. 1's own translator notes gave an exact cross-reference to the same two verses. Now confirmed directly against Ch. 3's verse text (S01-M02-L02, §5.6 and §5.8): Ch. 3 v.20 is the Panchabhuta (primordial elements) verse, and Ch. 3 v.22 is the Sattva/Rajas/Tamas guna-classification verse — exactly as both the existing workbook and the Ch. 1 Notes claimed.
