1. Chapter Purpose¶
Rounds out Module 5 with three related tools: a strength-assessment framework spanning all sixteen Vargas (Vimshopaka Bala, concept only today), the house-classification vocabulary this course will use from Semester 2 onward, and a technique for treating significator planets as their own Ascendants.
2. Connection Bridge¶
- Builds on: Ch. 3 v.55–60 (Module 2, planetary friendship — reused in Vargavishwa grading); the previous lesson (16 Vargas, reused in Vimshopaka Bala's groupings).

Ch. 8's own worked example grades a Sun-in-own-sign Hora placement as if it were an extreme-friend placement (18 instead of the stated own-sign value of 20) — an internal inconsistency (Decision Journal Entry 8) that means this course teaches the formula and point tables but does not vouch for that specific example's figures as a reliable calculation template.
- U2. No fixed answer beyond what the text supports — self-check that your response notices these are two independent classification systems answering different questions (Trik-sthana = difficulty/loss; Upachaya = growth potential over time), so a house can carry both simultaneously without contradiction.
- U3. Own sign/exaltation (20) represents the strongest possible support a Varga placement can give a planet — it is fully "at home." Extreme enemy's sign (5) represents the weakest — the planet is in genuinely hostile territory within that Varga. The scale mirrors the five-fold friendship framework from Module 2 (Ch. 3 v.55–60).
