By the end of this lesson I should be able to:
- Describe each of the nine grahas' classical physical appearance.
- Identify each planet's bodily ingredient (dhฤtu), abode, time-period, taste, tree-type, and season correspondences.
- Explain the Dhฤtu/Mลซla/Jฤซva threefold division and Saturn's special longevity note.
- Locate any specific correspondence claim quickly, using this lesson as a reference table rather than something to memorize verse-by-verse.
2. How Today's Lesson Fits Into Complete Chart Analysis¶
Why this lesson matters: this is the largest single block of reference/lookup material in Ch. 3 โ 26 verses, almost entirely correspondence tables. It matters less as something to memorize in full and more as a standing reference you'll return to, the same way you'd keep a table of contents open rather than memorizing it. A few pieces (dhฤtu, strength-by-time) do real interpretive work later.
Where these principles get used later, specifically:

4. While Reading, Focus On...¶
- Before you read, watch for: this is a "reference sprint" โ ten-plus small correspondence sets in quick succession. Don't try to absorb everything in one pass; treat your first read as a survey, and plan to return to specific tables when you actually need them later.
- Important terms: dhฤtu, mลซla, jฤซva, digbala, ritu, tanmฤtra (already met in Ch. 1 โ watch for it recurring here in the taste/element context).
- Passages likely to be difficult: v.35โ38 (strength by direction/time/paksha) packs several distinct rules into four verses โ worth its own careful table, given below.
- Key questions to hold: which of these correspondences seem likely to matter for actual chart judgment later (dhฤtu, digbala) versus which are more descriptive/traditional color (trees, clothes)? The text itself doesn't rank them โ but noticing the difference is a useful habit.
- How this connects to earlier lessons: L2 was "abstract identity" (soul, deity, guna); today is "concrete/physical identity" โ a shift in kind, not just more of the same.
5. Guided Lesson Notes¶
5.1 Physical Descriptions (v.23โ30)¶
L2 gave you each planet's abstract identity โ soul, deity, guna. Now BPHS gets concrete: what does each graha actually look like, if you picture it as a person? Explicitly stated in BPHS:

Don't read these as literal portraits of the planets themselves โ procedural organization for learning frames them as classical "significator body types," used later (per the translator's recurring notes) to judge a native's own physique from their Ascendant lord or a strong planet.
5.2 Bodily, Material, and Temporal Correspondences (v.31โ46)¶
This is the reference sprint the Lesson's opening warned you about โ a dense run of small correspondence sets. Explicitly stated in BPHS, condensed here into one table so you have it in one place:

The dhฤtu row (v.31) is worth pausing on โ translator commentary turns it into a real diagnostic technique: if the Ascendant lord is the Sun and well-placed, bones/calcium are strong and heal quickly; if the Sun is afflicted, especially by Saturn, chronic bone disease can result. A worked case is given with a birth-chart diagram not viewable in the digital text extraction โ open the printed volume near Ch. 3 v.31 to see it (image 00003.jpeg).
There's also a shorter parallel table, explicitly stated in BPHS, v.41โ44 (caste/cloth/metal): Rahu is "outcaste," Ketu "mixed caste"; both (with Saturn) dwell in anthills; Rahu's cloth is multicolored, Ketu's is ragged; Rahu's metal is lead, Ketu's is a blue gem (lapis); Jupiter wears saffron, Venus/Sun/Moon/Mercury/Mars/Saturn various silks.
5.3 Planetary Strength by Direction and Time โ Digbala Preview (v.35โ38)¶
Four verses pack in several distinct strength rules at once, so take this one slowly. Explicitly stated in BPHS:

Translator commentary names this outright as the seed of Digbala (directional strength), maps it onto houses (Ascendant=East, 4th=North, 7th=West, 10th=South), and notes that the full technical version is developed later โ this is a direct forward-pointer to Ch. 29 (Shadbala), not yet studied. Keep that distinction in mind: today's version is the first, simplified appearance of a system built out fully later, not the complete thing.
5.4 Dhฤtu, Mลซla, and Jฤซva Divisions (v.47)¶
Explicitly stated in BPHS: Dhฤtu (mineral/metal) lords โ Rahu, Mars, Saturn, Moon. Mลซla (root/plant) lords โ Sun, Venus. Jฤซva (living being) lords โ Mercury, Jupiter, Ketu.
You may wonder where this actually gets used โ translator commentary answers that directly: primarily a Horary Astrology (Prashna) technique. If the Ascendant lord at the moment of a question is Jupiter, a Jฤซva-lord, and debilitated in a bad house, the query concerns a living being (often health-related), and the debilitation itself indicates illness.
5.5 Saturn's Naisargika Note (v.48)¶
Explicitly stated in BPHS: of all planets, Saturn is "the eldest" โ yet Saturn grants the greatest number of years of life in Naisargika Dasha, a natural/inherent longevity-allocation system not yet studied in this course. Hold this as a forward pointer rather than something to interpret now โ procedural organization for learning flags it as pointing to a not-yet-covered Dasha subsystem; no further interpretation is warranted from this one line alone.
