1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson I should be able to:

  • State each planet's exaltation sign, exact exaltation degree, debilitation sign, and exact debilitation degree.
  • Calculate a planet's dignity (exalted / Mooltrikona / own sign / neither) given its sign and degree.
  • Explain why Mercury is a special case (its exaltation, Mooltrikona, and own sign all fall within the same sign, Virgo).
  • Apply today's dignity system to your own natal chart, as a first real Chart Clinic exercise.

2. How Today's Lesson Fits Into Complete Chart Analysis

Why this lesson matters: dignity is one of the single most load-bearing concepts in the rest of BPHS. From here forward, almost every judgment technique asks "is this planet exalted, debilitated, in Mooltrikona, or in its own sign?" before doing anything else. This is also the first lesson where a real chart โ€” yours โ€” can be tested against a specific, calculable rule, rather than a general classification.

Where these principles get used later, specifically:

Later step How today's premise feeds it
Planet Analysis / House Lords (Semester 2) Nearly every house-effect verse conditions its result on the relevant planet's dignity.
Strength / Shadbala (Ch. 29) Sthฤnabala (positional strength) is built directly on today's exaltation/Mooltrikona/own-sign scale.
Yogas (Ch. 36โ€“44, Ch. 77 Panchamahapurusha) Many yogas require a planet to be exalted or in its own sign/Mooltrikona as a triggering condition.
Ratio of Effects (Ch. 3 v.59โ€“60, next lesson) Directly scores results as a percentage based on today's dignity categories.
Chart Clinic, starting today This is the first lesson with a clean, single, testable chart factor: your own planets' dignity.

3. Assigned BPHS Reading

  • Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1 (Girish Chand Sharma translation, Sagar Publications)
  • Volume: 1 ยท Chapter: 3 ยท Verse range: 49โ€“54 ยท Printed page: within Ch. 3's 12โ€“49 range

4. While Reading, Focus On...

  • Before you read, watch for: exact degrees matter here โ€” this is one of the few places in this module where a single number changes the answer. Read the exaltation/debilitation table carefully before the Mooltrikona verses, since Mooltrikona is defined as a sub-range within several planets' exaltation-adjacent or own signs.
  • Important terms: ucca (exaltation), nฤซcha (debilitation), mลซlatrikoแน‡a, svakแนฃetra (own sign).
  • Passages likely to be difficult: v.51โ€“54's Mooltrikona ranges are packed tightly, verse after verse, each with a different degree split. Build the table as you read rather than trying to hold all seven in your head at once.
  • Key questions to hold: why is Mercury the only planet whose exaltation, Mooltrikona, and own sign all fall in the same sign (Virgo)? What does that make Mercury's dignity range look like compared to everyone else's?
  • How this connects to earlier lessons: builds directly on nothing specific from L1โ€“L3 โ€” this is a fresh technical system, though it will interact with L3's Digbala preview once Shadbala (Ch. 29) combines all strength factors together.

5. Guided Lesson Notes

5.1 Exaltation and Debilitation (v.49โ€“50)

This is one of the few places in the module where an exact number changes the answer, so read the table carefully before moving on. Explicitly stated in BPHS:

Planet Exaltation sign Deepest exaltation degree Debilitation sign Deepest debilitation degree
Sun Aries 10ยฐ Libra 10ยฐ
Moon Taurus 3ยฐ Scorpio 3ยฐ
Mars Capricorn 28ยฐ Cancer 28ยฐ
Mercury Virgo 15ยฐ Pisces 15ยฐ
Jupiter Cancer 5ยฐ Capricorn 5ยฐ
Venus Pisces 27ยฐ Virgo 27ยฐ
Saturn Libra 20ยฐ Aries 20ยฐ

Notice the pattern before moving on: the debilitation sign is always the 7th sign from the exaltation sign, at the same degree โ€” a built-in internal consistency check. Try confirming it yourself against the table; if a row doesn't fit, you've misread it.

5.2 Mooltrikona (v.51โ€“54)

Four verses pack these in tightly, so build the table as you go rather than holding all seven in your head at once. Explicitly stated in BPHS, each planet's Mooltrikona is a specific degree-range, distinct from (though sometimes adjacent to) its exaltation and own-sign portions:

Planet Sign Mooltrikona range Remainder of sign
Sun Leo 0ยฐโ€“20ยฐ 20ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (own sign)
Moon Taurus 3ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (0ยฐโ€“3ยฐ is the exaltation pinpoint; Moon's separate own sign is Cancer, not covered by this verse)
Mars Aries 0ยฐโ€“12ยฐ 12ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (own sign)
Mercury Virgo 15ยฐโ€“20ยฐ (0ยฐโ€“15ยฐ is exaltation; 20ยฐโ€“30ยฐ is own sign โ€” see ยง5.3)
Jupiter Sagittarius 0ยฐโ€“10ยฐ 10ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (own sign)
Venus Libra 0ยฐโ€“15ยฐ 15ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (own sign)
Saturn Aquarius 0ยฐโ€“20ยฐ 20ยฐโ€“30ยฐ (own sign)

Note the Moon is the exception: her Mooltrikona sign (Taurus) is the same sign as her exaltation, with the exaltation pinpoint carved out of the start of the range. Her actual own sign, Cancer, is a separate sign entirely, not part of this verse's Taurus-based table.

5.3 Mercury โ€” the Special Case

Hold onto this while you read v.52โ€“53: uniquely among the seven, Mercury's exaltation sign, Mooltrikona range, and own sign all fall within Virgo (explicitly stated in BPHS):

Virgo: 0ยฐโ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•15ยฐโ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•20ยฐโ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•30ยฐ
[ Exaltation ][Moolt.][ Own Sign ]

No other planet has all three dignities collapsed into a single sign this way โ€” worth remembering as a distinguishing fact about Mercury specifically.

5.4 Determining a Planet's Dignity โ€” Step by Step

Procedural organization for learning (a practical checklist assembled from v.49โ€“54, not a verse itself):

  1. Note the planet's sign and exact degree.
  2. Is it in its exaltation sign, at or near the exaltation degree? โ†’ Exalted (strongest).
  3. Is it in its Mooltrikona sign, within the Mooltrikona degree-range? โ†’ Mooltrikona (very strong).
  4. Is it in one of its own signs, outside the Mooltrikona range? โ†’ Own sign / Svakแนฃetra (strong).
  5. Is it in its debilitation sign, at or near the debilitation degree? โ†’ Debilitated (weakest).
  6. None of the above? โ†’ dignity is determined instead by relationship to the sign lord (friend/neutral/enemy sign) โ€” taught next lesson (L5), not today.

6. Key Terms

7. Continue

Next: read Ch. 3, verses 49โ€“54 in the source text below (or your own physical volume), then work through this chapter's Workbook โ€” Lesson S01-M02-L04: Dignity โ€” Exaltation, Debilitation, and Mooltrikona โ€” Workbook. It carries the dignity-drill exercises and the answers, all in one place. Then complete the Chart Clinic โ€” Lesson S01-M02-L04: Dignity โ€” Exaltation, Debilitation, and Mooltrikona โ€” Application โ€” Stage 1, first full activation. Determine the dignity of every planet in your own natal chart, and run the full seven-step reasoning chain on at least one whose dignity you can meaningfully test against known life outcomes.

8. Mastery Check

  • Workbook completed, including its Chart Observations & Application section
  • Chart Clinic completed for at least one of your own planets
  • Can state all seven exaltation/debilitation signs and degrees without notes
  • Can correctly apply the 5-step dignity procedure to a new sign/degree combination not seen before
  • Can explain why Mercury is the unique case (all three dignities in one sign)

9. Review Connections

  • Builds on: nothing specific from L1โ€“L3 โ€” a fresh technical system.
  • Revisit when studying: L5 (relationship-based dignity for the "neither" case); Ch. 3 v.59โ€“60 (Ratio of Effects, scores dignity as a percentage โ€” next lesson); Ch. 29 (Shadbala, Sthฤnabala is built on this).

10. Source References

  • Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1 (Girish Chand Sharma translation, Sagar Publications), Volume 1, Chapter 3, verses 49โ€“54, printed page within 12โ€“49.

11. Research Journal Prompt

Add an entry to your personal Research Journal โ€” today is a strong candidate for "how this changes my understanding of chart analysis," since it's your first real technical calculation on your own chart.
