Homework is included in this Workbook. Complete the marked Homework sections before moving to the Quiz.
Homework β Practice and Understanding is on this page. Homework β Chart Observation and Application continues on this chapter's Application page.
1. Chapter Purpose¶
This is where BPHS stops speaking in cosmology (Ch. 1β2) and starts speaking in astrology's actual working vocabulary: what a graha is (as distinct from a star), what the Ascendant is, the nine planets' names in their standard order, and the foundational benefic/malefic split every later technique assumes.
2. Connection Bridge¶
- Builds on: Ch. 1β2 β the paramΔtmΔ-aαΉΕa premise now gets its first technical vocabulary.
- Feeds forward into: the rest of Ch. 3 (deities, dignity, relationships); Ch. 9 (aspects); Ch. 36 (Yoga Karakas β already studied, revisit to confirm natural vs. functional benefic/malefic are different layers, not duplicates).
Bridge prompt: BPHS defines a graha partly by its predictive potency (Rahu/Ketu have no physical body but are full grahas). Before continuing, write one sentence on what this implies about how BPHS defines "real" β physical existence, or something else?
3. Memorize Β· Understand Β· Apply¶
| Memorize | Understand | Apply |
|---|---|---|
| The 9 grahas in order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu | Why grahas are defined by predictive potency, not physical existence | Use this order as your default scanning sequence for any chart from now on |
| Natural malefics: Sun, Saturn, Mars, weak Moon, Rahu, Ketu. Natural benefics: bright Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus | The Moon's Β±8-tithi conditional window (not simple waxing/waning) | Check your own Moon's tithi at birth against this window (Chart Clinic) |
| Mercury is conditional β benefic alone, malefic if conjunct a malefic | Watch for Mercury's conjunctions in every future chart you examine |
4. Homework β Practice and Understanding¶
(Closed-form items are self-check-only β no answers on this part of the page. Check your work against Β§9 Check Answers and Explanations below.)
Recall
R1. Name the nine grahas in order. R2. Which six grahas (in their specific states) are natural malefics, and which four are natural benefics? R3. What is the Lagna, per v.6? R4. What happens to Mercury's classification when it's conjunct a malefic planet?
Understanding
U1. In one sentence, distinguish a graha from a nakshatra β then explain why BPHS bothers making that distinction at all, given this book isn't primarily about nakshatras. U2. Rahu and Ketu have no physical body. Explain why BPHS still treats them as full grahas, and what that implies about how this book defines a "planet." U3. State the Moon's benefic/malefic rule precisely β not "waxing/waning," but the actual Β±8-tithi window. What would be lost if BPHS had simply classified the Moon as "always benefic" instead?
Application
A1. Mercury is conjunct Venus only (no other planets nearby). What is Mercury's functional status, and why? A2. Mercury is conjunct Saturn (a malefic) in a hypothetical chart. What is its functional status per v.11 β and how would that change if Mercury were conjunct Jupiter instead?
Source Awareness
S1. Is the grahas' names list ("Sun, Moon, Mars...") explicitly stated in verse text, or translator commentary? Cite the verse. S2. Is the ecliptic/zodiac astronomy explanation (the 12Β°+ belt, 27 nakshatras, etc.) explicitly stated in verse text, or translator commentary? S3. Locate the exact verse stating that good and bad effects are deduced from the Ascendant's condition and the planets joining/departing from each other. Give chapter and verse.
Fill-in-the-Blank
F1. A nakshatra has a _ position; a graha _ continuously through the nakshatras. F2. The zodiac's 27 nakshatras are grouped into _ equal signs, starting with _. F3. The Moon is malefic from the _ day of the dark fortnight to the _ day of the bright fortnight. F4. Astronomically, Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's _ and _ nodes.

Recall
- R1. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (v.10).
- R2. Malefics: Sun, Saturn, Mars, the Moon (in her malefic tithi window), Rahu, Ketu. Benefics: the Moon (in her benefic tithi window), Mercury, Jupiter, Venus (v.11).
- R3. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at a given moment β "the most important factor in a horoscope" (v.6).
- R4. Mercury becomes malefic (conjunct both a benefic and malefic gives mixed results, per the translator's Notes).
Understanding
- U1. A nakshatra is fixed in position; a graha continuously moves through the nakshatras (v.2β3). BPHS makes the distinction because it's a HorΔ (predictive) text specifically about the moving bodies β nakshatras are acknowledged as important general knowledge (v.7) but are explicitly not this book's subject.
- U2. Astronomically, Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's nodes with no physical body β yet BPHS treats them as full grahas because of their real, trackable predictive potency (their eclipse connection has been observed for millennia). This implies BPHS's operative definition of "graha" is functional/predictive, not strictly physical.
- U3. Malefic from the 8th day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) to the 8th day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha), weakest around the 14thβ15th of the dark fortnight (near New Moon); benefic from the 8th day of the bright fortnight to the 8th day of the dark fortnight (spanning Full Moon). No fixed answer for the second half β self-check that your response notices the lost precision: a simple "always benefic" rule would erase the entire malefic window and the specific Β±8-tithi boundary BPHS actually gives.
Application
- A1. Benefic (Saumya) β Mercury's natural state, unchanged, since Venus is benefic and only conjunction with a malefic triggers the conditional shift (v.11).
- A2. Conjunct Saturn (malefic): Mercury becomes malefic. Conjunct Jupiter (benefic) instead: Mercury remains benefic (its natural state), since nothing malefic is present to trigger the conditional shift.
Source Awareness
- S1. Explicitly stated in BPHS β v.10.
- S2. Translator commentary β the ecliptic/zodiac astronomy explanation is in the Notes after v.6, not in the verse text itself.
- S3. Ch. 3, v.6.
Fill-in-the-Blank
- F1. fixed / moves
- F2. 12 / Aries
- F3. 8th / 8th
- F4. ascending / descending
