Module 7 Review — Judgement of Houses¶
One-Page Summary¶
Chapter 13 does one job well before Semester 2 does anything more ambitious with it: it hands you BPHS's own compact index of what each of the twelve houses signifies, house by house, in order — physique and innate nature at the 1st, through expenses and one's own death at the 12th — and then gives a single general-purpose rule for judging whether a house is prospering or afflicted. That rule has two halves. The half you can use immediately: a house prospers when it is occupied by or aspected by benefics or its own lord, and is afflicted when its lord is combust, conjunct malefics, unaspected by benefics or its own lord, conjunct the lords of "evil houses," or defeated in planetary war. The half you cannot yet use: the rule also depends on the lord's Avastha (planetary state — youthful, old, asleep, dead), a concept the translator's own Notes explicitly forward-reference to Chapter 47, not taught until Semester 2. Along the way the lesson flags two genuine textual variants the translator had to adjudicate (the 5th house's "प्रबंधकम्" and the 6th house's "मातुलान्तकशंकानां"), and one real terminological looseness worth holding onto rather than smoothing over: the translator's own bracketed gloss of "evil houses" in v.14–16's Notes (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th) does not match Ch. 8's stated Trik-sthana definition (6th, 8th, 12th only, with the 3rd and 11th classified as Upachaya) — and the underlying Sanskrit term's own "ādi" ("and others/etc.") suggests the bracket was never meant as a precisely closed list in the first place.
Why it matters for chart reading: every future house-by-house lesson (Semester 2's Ch. 14–25) assumes you already know, at minimum, what a house signifies — this module is that index, not the doctrine. It also hands you the first general-purpose "is this house doing well or badly" rule the course will use repeatedly, with an honest, flagged gap (Avastha) rather than a shortcut explanation standing in for Ch. 47's real treatment.

Common Mistakes¶
- Over-interpreting the house-signification list. Ch. 13 gives a short, compact index on purpose — resist expanding any house's list beyond what's actually stated; the full expansion is Semester 2's Ch. 14–25 job, not this module's.
- Collapsing "evil houses" into Ch. 8's Trik-sthana. The translator's bracketed gloss (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th) is not the same list as Ch. 8's Trik-sthana (6th, 8th, 12th) — treat them as two distinct things this course flags rather than silently reconciling.
- Trying to apply the Avastha half of the prosperity/affliction rule anyway. Avastha is forward-referenced, not taught, in this chapter. Only the occupation/aspect half of the rule is usable right now — guessing at a planet's state before Ch. 47 is studied defeats the point of flagging the gap honestly.
- Reading the two flagged textual variants as errors. The 5th house's "प्रबंधकम्" and the 6th house's "मातुलान्तकशंकानां" are genuine, acknowledged differences between published editions/commentators — not mistakes in this course's own reading.
- Treating the "evil houses" bracket as a firm, closed list. The underlying Sanskrit term itself contains "ādi" ("and others/etc."), which is a signal the verse isn't offering a precisely bounded list — don't cite the five-house bracket with more confidence than the source itself supports.
