1. Chapter Purpose¶
Varnada Dasha is BPHS's first full Dasha (timing) system in this course — a sign-based (not planet-based) technique deriving both a starting point and a duration from the natal Ascendant and Hora Lagna. It previews the general shape later Dasha systems (Semester 3) will reuse.

Understanding
- U1. The rule tests the parity of the counted numbers (N1, N2) rather than the signs themselves because the counting method (direct from Aries vs. reverse from Pisces) already accounts for whether the sign is odd or even — the second layer of the rule (same/different class) operates on the resulting counts, a distinct step from the first.
- U2. BPHS's own text is brief here ("should be known in the same manner," v.24) and does not spell out explicitly whether the same Hora Lagna is reused for every house's Varnada calculation or whether each house's own analogous point is used instead — this course does not assert an answer where the text itself is this terse.
- U3. Example 1's arithmetic is fully self-consistent with the stated verbal rule (sum 8, even, correctly counted from Pisces reverse to Leo) and requires no unstated exception. Example 2 (sum 14) applies a mod-12 reduction step never stated in the verse, and then counts from Aries direct despite the even result — contradicting the stated rule as literally written. Example 1 needs no special pleading to verify; Example 2 does.
- U4. The dasha years equal the number of signs counted between the natal Ascendant and its Varnada sign.
Application
- A1. The native's life is limited to the dasha period of that trine sign; the translator's Notes point to the Shoola Dasha technique (Ch. 48, not taught until Semester 3) for the fuller method.
- A2. Accept any answer noting that a sign-based Dasha's duration and starting point come from a fixed geometric relationship between two chart points established at birth (natal Ascendant, Hora Lagna) — it does not change as planets transit, unlike a hypothetical transit-based system, and it belongs to the house/sign itself (v.25) even though planets may occupy that sign.
