Module 2 Review — Planetary Characters and Description¶
One-Page Summary¶
Module 1 established why a graha can signify anything. Module 2 is where that premise becomes a working toolkit: everything needed to describe one planet in isolation, across ten sub-topics packed into Chapter 3's 74 verses.
Lesson 1 opened with the graha/nakshatra distinction (moving vs. fixed bodies) and the nine grahas in their standard order, then drew the natural benefic/malefic line — including the two conditional cases (Mercury flips with conjunction; the Moon flips on a precise ±8-tithi window around New/Full Moon, not a loose "waxing/waning" rule).
Lesson 2 gave each planet's core signification (Sun=soul, Moon=mind, Mars=strength, Mercury=speech, Jupiter=knowledge, Venus=semen, Saturn=grief — seven verses only, not all nine), then layered on cabinet rank, complexion, deity, sex, primordial element, caste, and guna. This lesson also resolved Module 1's own open cross-reference: Ch. 3 v.20 is confirmed as the elements verse, v.22 as the guna verse.
Lesson 3 was a reference sprint — physical descriptions, then a dense correspondence table (dhātu, abode, time-period, taste, tree, season), a Digbala preview (full system deferred to Ch. 29), and the Dhātu/Mūla/Jīva Horary categories. Mostly lookup material, not memorization-first.
Lesson 4 introduced dignity — exaltation, debilitation, Mooltrikona, own sign — with exact degrees, and the first real Chart Clinic Stage 1 activation (testing your own chart against a calculable rule for the first time). Mercury is the single case where all three dignities (exaltation, Mooltrikona, own sign) fall inside one sign, Virgo.
Lesson 5 added the relationship system — natural (fixed, from Mooltrikona house-counting), temporary (chart-specific, from actual position), and the five-fold compound that reconciles them — then combined dignity (L4) and relationship (L5) into the Ratio of Effects table: a single ordered priority ladder, not an additive score.
Lesson 6 was the calculation-heaviest lesson: the five-point Upagraha chain (Dhuma → Ketu-point, with a built-in arithmetic check), Gulika (from day/night duration and a Dhruvanka shortcut), and Pranapada (movable/fixed/dual sign offset rule) — computed positions to be interpreted later in Ch. 27, not now.
Why it matters for chart reading: this module is the direct prerequisite for every house-by-house and yoga-based judgment in Semester 2. Dignity and relationship in particular are checked before almost any other technique in the rest of BPHS.

Common Mistakes¶
- Assuming all nine grahas get every classification in this chapter. Several verses (deities, sex, elements, castes) cover only the seven classical planets — Rahu/Ketu are silently excluded unless a table explicitly says otherwise (translator-supplied, not verse-stated, for the Rahu/Ketu relationship row in L5).
- Treating the Moon's benefic/malefic rule as "waxing good, waning bad." BPHS gives a precise ±8-tithi window around New/Full Moon — the informal version loses real precision.
- Assuming natural relationships are mutual. They are computed independently per planet from its own Mooltrikona sign — "A friends B" does not imply "B friends A." This is one of the most-tested points in the whole course.
- Adding dignity and relationship scores together. The Ratio of Effects table is a priority ladder — check exaltation first, then Mooltrikona, then own sign, and only fall back to relationship-based tiers if none of those apply. It is never a sum of two independent numbers.
- Overclaiming the Digbala preview (L3) as the finished system. Ch. 3 v.35–38 is explicitly the seed; the full technical version is Ch. 29 (Shadbala) — treat today's version as directional-strength background, not a complete strength tool yet.
- Conflating the shadow-point "Ketu" (end of the Upagraha chain, L6) with the graha Ketu (the lunar node, L1). BPHS uses the same name for two different things in two different places in this same chapter — context alone distinguishes them.
- Treating the Upagraha dignity table (L6 §5.3) as BPHS's own claim. It is translator commentary sourced from a different named text (Jataka Lankaram), not Parashara's verse.
