5. Homework โ€” Chart Observation and Application

Skill level: Calculation practice / Chart-data recognition. Abstract-arithmetic and own-chart items are kept separate below, per this course's rule against inventing chart data โ€” nothing in Exercise 5B is connected to any real chart.

Exercise 5A โ€” Trace One Stage. Pick one of the six stages in the Lesson's ยง5.3 (Ishta Kaala, Chaalana, Moon's position, Ascendant, 10th House, or house trisection) and work through BPHS's own numbers by hand, checking your result against the book's stated answer before moving on.

Exercise 5B โ€” Manual Calculation Practice. Abstract arithmetic only โ€” all numbers below are invented for drill purposes and are not connected to any real chart, per this course's rule against inventing chart data.

  • Part A โ€” Time Conversion. Convert 5 hours 12 minutes of clock time into Ghati-Pala-Vipala, using BPHS's stated ร—2ยฝ shortcut (Ch. 5 v.1's Notes).
  • Part B โ€” Chaalana Correction. A planet's Pankti-table position is 4s 12ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ and its daily motion is 0ยฐ48โ€ฒ00โ€ณ. The Chaalana works out to Aishya (positive), 15 Ghati (a quarter of a day). What is the corrected position? (Reasoning check: 15 Ghati is 1/4 of 60 Ghati, i.e. 1/4 of a day โ€” scale the daily motion proportionally, then add, since Aishya means add.)
  • Part C โ€” Kshepaka Trisection. The Ascendant is 3s 20ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ and the 4th House is 6s 20ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ. Trisect the arc to find one Kshepaka, then compute the 2nd House (Ascendant + 1 Kshepaka) and 3rd House (Ascendant + 2 Kshepakas).
  • Part D โ€” Reasoning Check. If the Ishta Kaala in Part B had instead fallen before the Pankti Kaala (making the Chaalana Yaata, not Aishya), would the corrected position be higher or lower than the Pankti-table position? Why?

Exercise 5C โ€” Your Own Chart's Data. From your own already-cast D1 chart (however it was originally produced โ€” software or otherwise), note your Ascendant's sign and degree, and your 10th House's sign and degree โ€” no recalculation required, just accurate recording. Then note which house system your software used (if known) and whether it matches the conceptual approach Ch. 5 uses (Ascendant via horizon/Swodaya, other houses via trisection from Ascendant and 10th House) โ€” a genuinely different house system (e.g., equal-house) would not match this method exactly. If unknown, note that honestly.

Chart Clinic.   • Part B: Quarter-day (15 Ghati) motion = 1/4 of 0ยฐ48โ€ฒ = 12โ€ฒ. Aishya (add): 4s12ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ + 0ยฐ12โ€ฒ00โ€ณ = 4s12ยฐ12โ€ฒ00โ€ณ.
  • Part C: Arc (4th โˆ’ 1st) = 6s20ยฐ โˆ’ 3s20ยฐ = 3s0ยฐ = 90ยฐ. One Kshepaka = 1s0ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ (30ยฐ). 2nd House = 3s20ยฐ + 1s0ยฐ = 4s20ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ. 3rd House = 3s20ยฐ + 2s0ยฐ = 5s20ยฐ00โ€ฒ00โ€ณ.
  • Part D: Lower. Yaata means the Chaalana-scaled motion is subtracted from the Pankti-table position rather than added, so the corrected position would be earlier (lower) in the zodiac than the Pankti-table figure, not later (higher) as in Part B's Aishya case.
