Classify the twelve houses as Kendra, Panaphara, or Apoklima; identify the Trikona houses and the Trik-sthana (Dusthana) houses; and name each house's alternate Sanskrit name (Tanu, Dhana, etc.).
Explain, at the concept level, what Vimshopaka Bala measures, its formula, and its four grouping-systems (Shadvarga, Saptavarga, Dashavarga, Shodasavarga) — without needing to compute it from a real chart yet.
Apply the "planets as alternate ascendants" technique (Surya Lagna, Chandra Lagna, and other planet-based Lagnas) to identify which house to examine for a specific significator's own domain.
Explain why this lesson does not duplicate Ch. 13's full house-by-house effects material, and what today's house-classification content is actually for.

2. How Today's Lesson Fits Into Complete Chart Analysis¶

Why this lesson matters: house classification is foundational vocabulary this course will use constantly from Semester 2 onward — today introduces it early because Ch. 8's own "planets as alternate ascendants" technique requires it. Vimshopaka Bala previews a strength-assessment framework that recurs (in a different, planet-based form) in Ch. 29's Shadbala, later in Semester 2.
Where these principles get used later, specifically:

4. While Reading, Focus On...¶

Before you read, watch for: v.9–32 (Vimshopaka Bala) is calculation-heavy but taught here at the concept level only — don't feel obligated to verify every figure in the chapter's own worked example (see Decision Journal Entry 8).
Important terms: Kendra, Panaphara, Apoklima, Trikona, Trik-sthana, Chaturasra, Upachaya, Swavishwa, Vargavishwa, Surya Lagna, Chandra Lagna.
Passages likely to be difficult: v.33–38's house classification briefly overlaps with what Ch. 13 (S1-M7) will teach in depth — today's treatment is deliberately light, just enough to support v.39–43's technique.
Key questions to hold: why would BPHS treat planets other than the Ascendant as their own "Lagna" for specific questions?
How this connects to earlier lessons: builds on the sixteen Vargas (previous lesson) for Vimshopaka Bala; builds on Ch. 3's planetary relationships (Module 2, dignity/friendship) for the Vargavishwa friendship-grade table.

5. Guided Lesson Notes¶

5.1 Vimshopaka Bala — Concept, Formula, and Groupings (v.9–32)¶

Explicitly stated in BPHS: Vimshopaka Bala ("20-point strength") measures how strongly a planet's Varga placements support it, combined across a chosen grouping of Vargas.

The two components (v.17–25):

Swavishwa — a fixed point-allocation per Varga, depending on which grouping is used. In the Shadvarga (6 Vargas): Lagna=6, Hora=2, Drekkana=4, Navamamsha=5, Dwadasamsha=2, Trimshamsha=1 (totaling 20). The Saptavarga, Dashavarga, and Shodasavarga groupings each redistribute the same 20 points across more Vargas (7, 10, and 16 respectively) — see the full point table in the Workbook.
Vargavishwa — a friendship-based grade for the planet's specific placement within each Varga: own sign or exaltation = 20; extreme/intimate friend's sign = 18; friend's sign = 15; neutral/equal = 10; enemy's sign = 7; extreme enemy's sign = 5. (This directly reuses Module 2's five-fold friendship framework, Ch. 3 v.55–60.)

Formula: Vimshopaka Bala (per Varga) = (Swavishwa × Vargavishwa) ÷ 20. Summed across all Vargas in the chosen grouping, this gives a planet's total Vimshopaka Bala out of 20.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.26–27 and the translator's Notes: the resulting score is graded — below 5 gives no auspicious result; 5–10 some auspicious effect; 10–15 mediocre; 15–20 wholly favorable. A finer 8-grade scale (Atipoorna through Ati Heena) is given in the Notes on v.30–32, alongside a percentage-equivalent scale attributed to astrologer R. Santhanam — Translator commentary, not BPHS's own verse.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.28–29: a separate strength source — how far a planet sits from the Sun (rising/setting, i.e. combustion-adjacent) — is also folded into the full Vimshopaka Bala assessment, with specific combustion-degree thresholds given per planet (Moon 12°, Mars 17°, Mercury 14°, Jupiter 11°, Venus 10°, Saturn 16°).

This lesson does not ask you to compute Vimshopaka Bala from a real chart. Ch. 8's own worked example (birth data 12-7-1952) contains at least one internal inconsistency — flagged in Decision Journal Entry 8 — where an own-sign placement is graded as if it were an extreme-friend placement. Full, independently-verified calculation practice is deferred to S3-M22.

5.2 House Classification (v.33–38)¶

Explicitly stated in BPHS: the twelve houses are classified into three groups by their angular relationship to the Ascendant:

Kendra (angles): 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th.
Panaphara (succedents): 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th.
Apoklima (cadents): 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th.

Separately: the 5th and 9th houses are Trikona (trines). The 6th, 8th, and 12th are Trik-sthana (evil/difficult houses, also called Dusthana). The 4th and 8th together are called Chaturasra. The 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th are Upachaya (houses of growth).

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.37–38: each house also has an alternate Sanskrit name tied to its subject matter: Tanu (1st, physique), Dhana (2nd, wealth), Sahaja (3rd, siblings), Bandhu (4th, relationships), Putra (5th, progeny), Ari (6th, enemies), Yuvati (7th, spouse), Randhra (8th, longevity), Dharma (9th, religion), Karma (10th, livelihood), Laabha (11th, gains), Vyaya (12th, expenditure).

Note for later: this course does not re-teach house effects in depth here — that is Ch. 13's (S1-M7) and Semester 2's dedicated subject. Today's classification is taught only to the depth Ch. 8 itself gives it, as the prerequisite for v.39–43's technique below.

5.3 Planets as Alternate Ascendants (v.39–43)¶

Explicitly stated in BPHS: for specific significations, a planet other than the Ascendant can itself be treated as a Lagna, and the relevant house counted from that planet, not from the natal Ascendant:

Explicitly stated in BPHS: this technique generalizes — the significator of any topic can itself be treated as an alternate Ascendant, and the same house classification/effects reasoning applied from that new starting point.
