1. Learning Objectives¶
By the end of this lesson I should be able to:
- Explain what Ghati/Pala/Vipala units are and convert between them and clock time.
- Identify the five outputs Ch. 5's procedure produces, in order: (1) a time-corrected planetary Pankti position, (2) the Moon's exact longitude, (3) the Ascendant, (4) the 10th House, (5) the remaining 10 houses via trisection.
- Explain why each stage was needed in a pre-software era β planets move at different, non-uniform rates; the Moon's speed varies enough that an eight-day Pankti table needed its own finer correction; the Ascendant depends on both time and the birthplace's latitude, via sign-rising-times that are not equal to 30Β° of clock-equivalent time.
- Trace BPHS's own Hapur worked example (2-6-1951) through every stage without needing to invent numbers.

2. How Today's Lesson Fits Into Complete Chart Analysis¶
- Why this lesson matters: every later lesson in this course assumes a finished D1 chart already exists β a Lagna, twelve house cusps, and a set of planetary longitudes. This lesson is the only place BPHS explains where those numbers actually come from and what they represent. It will never be repeated as a calculation the student performs by hand again in this course, but understanding it means the student is never simply trusting a black box.

4. While Reading, Focus On...¶
- Before you read, watch for: the chapter runs one continuous worked example (a birth at Hapur, 2-6-1951) through nearly every stage β don't try to hold the method in the abstract; follow the numbers.
- Important terms: Ghati, Pala, Vipala, Pankti, Ishta Kaala, Mishramaan Kaala, Chaalana (Yaata/Aishya), Bhayaata, Bhabhoga, Palbha, Charkhanda, Swodaya, Lankodaya, Saayana/Nirayana, Ayanamsha, Nata/Unnata Kaala, Kshepaka, Bhava-Sandhi.
- Passages likely to be difficult: the chapter uses at least four distinct time-and-arc unit systems in sequence (Ghati/Pala/Vipala for elapsed time; Angul/Vyangul for shadow-length; Palas again for sign-rising-value; degrees/minutes/seconds for the final answer) β track units at every step rather than assuming they carry over.
- Key questions to hold: why does the Ascendant calculation need a different rising-time value per sign (Swodaya) instead of treating every sign as an equal 30Β°-of-time slice?
- How this connects to earlier lessons: builds on nothing specific from Modules 1β3 β this is the first calculation-heavy chapter and stands on its own arithmetic, though the signs being calculated into (Aries through Pisces) are the same twelve profiled in Module 3.
5. Guided Lesson Notes¶
5.1 What BPHS Is Calculating, and Why It Matters¶
Explicitly stated in BPHS, throughout: a pre-computer almanac (Pankti) only listed planetary positions at fixed reference moments, roughly every eight days, at local midnight. Picture how rarely an actual birth lines up with one of those moments β almost never. So before anything else, Ch. 5 has to solve that mismatch: it is the complete procedure for correcting the almanac's reference data to the exact birth moment (Ishta Kaala) β and, separately, for deriving the Ascendant and house cusps, which no almanac lists at all, since they depend on the birthplace's latitude as well as the time.
Notice that BPHS doesn't hand you one procedure here, it walks through five, in a fixed sequence β worth holding in mind as a map before you meet the arithmetic itself. Procedural organization for learning lays them out in the order BPHS presents them:
- Pankti correction (v.1β4): adjust the almanac's fixed-moment planetary positions to the exact birth moment, using each planet's own daily motion.
- The Moon's exact position (v.5β9): the Moon moves fast enough and unevenly enough that the Pankti correction alone isn't considered precise enough β a separate Nakshatra-based method (Bhayaata/Bhabhoga) refines it.
- The Ascendant / Lagna (v.10β19Β½): requires the Sun's Ayanamsha-corrected position, the birthplace's latitude (via a measured shadow-length, Palbha), and each sign's own rising-time (Swodaya) β signs do not all rise in equal time because the ecliptic meets the horizon at a changing angle.
- The 10th House (v.20β22Β½): a parallel procedure to the Ascendant's, but keyed to culmination (the meridian) rather than the horizon, using Nata/Unnata Kaala.
- The remaining 10 houses (v.23β24): once the Ascendant and 10th House are known, the other ten house cusps are derived by trisecting the arcs between them (the Kshepaka/Bhava-Sandhi method) β not by any further reference to time.
5.2 Inputs, Units, and Conversions¶
Explicitly stated in BPHS, scattered through the chapter's Notes:

Required inputs for a full run of the method: date and exact clock time of birth; the local almanac's Pankti data (planetary positions and daily motions at the nearest reference moment); sunrise time on the birth date; day/night duration on the birth date; the birthplace's Palbha (measured equinox-day shadow-length, which encodes latitude); the Ayanamsha value for the date.
Common failure points, procedural organization for learning, inferred directly from where the chapter itself pauses to warn the reader:
- Mixing up Yaata (subtract) vs. Aishya (add) when the Pankti time and Ishta Kaala don't align (v.2β4) β the book explicitly notes retrograde planets reverse this rule.
- Losing track of which unit denomination (Ghati/Pala/Vipala vs. degrees/minutes/seconds) a given intermediate figure is actually in β the chapter converts between them constantly and does not restate units at every line.
- Confusing Saayana (tropical, Ayanamsha-inclusive) and Nirayana (sidereal, Ayanamsha-corrected) positions β the method computes in Saayana terms and only converts to Nirayana as a final step (v.18, v.19Β½).
- Misidentifying the Ashuddha sign (the sign where the running subtraction of Swodaya/Lankodaya values first goes negative) β the entire final answer depends on stopping at the correct sign.
5.3 The Worked Example β BPHS's Own Numbers (Hapur, 2-6-1951)¶
Translator commentary β the chapter runs one continuous worked example throughout, and it rewards following stage by stage rather than skimming ahead to the results. Reproduced here in stages exactly as BPHS presents it; no numbers below are invented for this course.

Applied to the Sun's Pankti-table position (1s 13Β°24β²36β³) using the Sun's daily motion (57β²18β³), BPHS arrives at a corrected Nirayana Sun position of 1s 18Β°8β²22β³ (the chapter's own working shows 1s 18Β°8β²12β³ at one point and 1s 18Β°8β²22β³ at another β flagged below as a Decision Journal item, not silently reconciled here).

Notice that BPHS doesn't stop at a single pass here β it gives two independent routes to the same Ascendant, one using the Sun's traversed degrees in its sign, one using its to-be-traversed degrees (v.14 vs. v.19) β and both are shown converging on the same final answer (9s 19Β°4β²42β³/43β³, a 1β³ rounding difference between the two passes), which the chapter itself appears to offer as an internal consistency check.
Stage 5 β The 10th House (v.20β22Β½):
Using Pashchimanata (27 Ghati β 28 Pala β 20 Vipala, since birth was before midnight) and the same sign-by-sign subtraction method against Lankodaya (equatorial, not local-latitude) values, BPHS arrives at a Nirayana 10th House of 7s 3Β°43β²59β³ (Libra) β and states plainly that adding 6 signs gives the 4th House (1s 3Β°43β²59β³, Aries).
Stage 6 β The Remaining Houses via Trisection (v.23β24):
The arc from Ascendant to 4th House, and separately from 4th House to 7th House (Ascendant + 6 signs), is each divided into three equal parts (Kshepakas). Adding one and two Kshepakas to the Ascendant gives the 2nd and 3rd Houses; adding one and two (second-arc) Kshepakas to the 4th House gives the 5th and 6th Houses; the 8th through 12th Houses follow by adding 6 signs to the 2nd through 6th. BPHS's own resulting house cusps:

BPHS also gives the method for Bhava-Sandhi (the midpoint/boundary between two consecutive houses) β average of the two houses' positions β with the 1st House's Sandhi worked as 10s 6Β°31β²15β³.
5.4 Modern-Software Equivalent, and What Software May Conceal¶
Procedural organization for learning β none of this is stated in BPHS itself, which predates software by centuries, but it's required by this course's Calculation Chapters policy, and it's worth sitting with before you move past this chapter for good:
- What software does instead: modern chart-casting software skips the almanac correction altogether β it computes planetary longitudes directly from ephemeris data (precise orbital models), and computes house cusps using a chosen house system (BPHS's method is closest in spirit to Sripati or a Porphyry-family method β a topic Requires verification, not asserted here without direct comparison), all applied to exact time and geographic coordinates you supply.
- What software may conceal: the sensitivity of the whole output to birth-time and Ayanamsha accuracy. This is exactly what BPHS's manual method makes visible and software tends to hide β a few Vipalas of error in Ishta Kaala visibly shifts every downstream figure in the hand method, where software simply returns a clean-looking final chart regardless of how uncertain the underlying birth time actually is, and silently uses whatever Ayanamsha the software's default happens to be unless you check.
- Interpretive conclusions that depend on this chapter's result: worth sitting with this one in particular β literally every future chart-reading rule in this course depends on an accurate Lagna and accurate planetary longitudes. This is the one point in the whole course where a silent input error (wrong birth time, wrong Ayanamsha, wrong place) would propagate into every subsequent lesson's conclusions, with no later lesson able to detect it.
