5. Homework — Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Observation / Classification / Recognition.
Exercise 5A — The Full Identity Table. Fill in every cell for the seven classical planets, citing the verse for each column. Leave Rahu/Ketu cells marked "not assigned in v.12–22" where the text doesn't classify them.

Pattern recognition, once the table is filled in:
- Do the Sattvika planets (Sun, Moon, Jupiter) share anything else in common across the other columns (rank, caste)? Do the Tamasika planets (Mars, Saturn)?
- Is there any column where a planet's classification seems to sit oddly against the others (e.g., a Sattvika planet with an otherwise "harsh" set of attributes, or vice versa)? Note it — don't force it to resolve, just observe it.
Exercise 5B — Running Chart Lab. Revisit your Ch. 1 entry ("planets are conscious significators of a soul carrying karma"). Does today's material — especially the deity and guna layers — deepen or complicate that working assumption? One dated sentence.
Exercise 5C — Your Own Chart. If you know your own chart, identify which guna (Sattvika/Rajasika/Tamasika) your Ascendant lord belongs to. No interpretation yet — pure observation.

6. Reflection Questions¶
(For your journal. No single right answer.)
- The translator's note on caste (v.21) explicitly rejects a birth-based reading in favor of a quality-based one. Does this change how comfortable you are using the term "caste" when discussing this verse with others? How would you phrase it instead?
- You now have two different three-way planetary classifications from this chapter alone: benefic/malefic/conditional (L1) and Sattvika/Rajasika/Tamasika (today). Are these the same classification wearing different names, or genuinely different axes? Justify from the text.
- Write a short paragraph on why resolving Module 1's open item this way — verifying it directly against Ch. 3's actual verse text, rather than trusting the Ch. 1 workbook's approximation — matters for how you should treat any cross-reference in this course going forward.

Pattern recognition: the Sattvika trio (Sun, Moon, Jupiter) includes both "royal" ranks and a minister — no single-rank pattern, but notably all three are also either benefic or conditionally-benefic from L1. The Tamasika pair (Mars, Saturn) spans army-chief and servant — opposite ends of the cabinet hierarchy, showing guna and rank are independent axes, not correlated. No forced resolution needed — this is intentionally open observation.
§5B — Running Chart Lab / §5C — Your Own Chart
No fixed answer for either — self-check that you actually revisited your Ch. 1 entry (5B) and correctly identified your Ascendant lord's guna from the table above (5C), not that you reached any particular conclusion.
