Module 7 Assessment — Judgement of Houses

Module Test: S01-M07 — Judgement of Houses (Ch. 13)

Module 7 is a single lesson giving the twelve house significations and a general prosperity/affliction rule. This test checks accurate recall of the significations and correct handling of the chapter's two forward-referenced/unresolved points, not over-interpretation beyond what the lesson actually teaches.

  1. State BPHS's stated significations for the 4th, 8th, and 11th houses.

Part 2 — Rule Explanation

  1. Explain the general rule for judging whether a house is prospering or afflicted. Which single planetary factor does this rule depend on that this lesson does not itself teach, and where is it taught instead?

Part 3 — Source Awareness

  1. The lesson flags two translator judgment calls between competing textual readings — one for the 5th house's signification, one for the 6th's. Name both and state, for each, what the translator chose and why treating this as "genuine editorial variance" rather than "an error in this course's reading" matters.

Part 1 — Recall

1. 4th house: conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and houses. 8th house: longevity, battle, enemies, forts, wealth of the dead, knowledge of past/future lives. 11th house: receipt of various articles, son's wife, income, prosperity, quadrupeds. Source: Ch. 13 v.2–13.

Part 2 — Rule Explanation

2. A house prospers when occupied/aspected by benefics or its own lord, or when its lord is in a good Avastha or placed in the 10th house. It is afflicted when its lord is combust, conjunct malefics, unaspected by benefics/its own lord, conjunct evil-house lords, defeated in planetary war, or in a poor Avastha. The rule depends on a planet's Avastha (state) — not taught in this lesson; the translator's own Notes point directly to Chapter 47 (Semester 2) for the full treatment. Part 3 — Source Awareness

3. 5th house: "प्रबंधकम्" is translated here as "ability to manage affairs," against a competing reading of "splendour of intellect" (both appear in the lesson's table, since the verse pairs several terms). 6th house: "मातुलान्तकशंकानां" is read as one compound, "doubt about maternal uncle's death," rather than as two separate significations. Treating both as genuine, acknowledged textual variance (rather than an error in this course's own reading) matters because it keeps the student from either "correcting" the translator's stated choice or assuming the course made a transcription mistake — both readings are attested in different published editions, and the translator states his own preference explicitly. Part 4 — Correction of False Statements

4. False. Ch. 8 (Module 5, v.35) defines Trik-sthana specifically as the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses only; the 3rd and 11th are classified as Upachaya (growth houses) instead, not Trik-sthana. Ch. 13's own "evil houses" bracketed gloss (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th) is a broader, translator-supplied list that should not be conflated with Ch. 8's specific Trik-sthana definition. Part 5 — Comparison

5. Not identical. Ch. 8 v.35 defines Trik-sthana specifically as the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses. Ch. 13's Notes bracket "evil houses" as the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 12th — a broader, five-house list. The underlying Sanskrit term ("त्रिकेशाद्यैः") includes "ādi" (etc.), suggesting the verse itself does not offer one fixed, closed list — the translator's five-house bracket is his own interpretive gloss, not a restatement of Ch. 8's specific definition. Part 6 — Synthesis

6. No single correct wording — graded for recognizing that Ch. 13's twelve one-line significations function as an index, deliberately compact, that Semester 2's Ch. 14–25 (one lesson per house or house-group) will each expand into a full chapter of specific effects, and that the Avastha half of today's prosperity rule is likewise a named forward reference to Ch. 47, not something this lesson attempts to teach itself. A response that treats today's list as a complete interpretive doctrine, or invents Avastha content not given here, should be marked for revision.
