5. Homework โ Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Calculation, worked step-by-step. Simplified numbers first, building toward the book's own (harder) examples.
Exercise 5A โ Dhuma Chain. The Sun is at Leo 10ยฐ (4 signs 10ยฐ, counting Aries=0). Compute: Dhuma (Sun + 4s13ยฐ20โฒ) โ Vyatipata (12s โ Dhuma) โ Parivesha (Vyatipata + 6s) โ Indra Chapa (12s โ Parivesha) โ Chain-"Ketu" (Indra Chapa + 16ยฐ40โฒ) โ Check: Chain-"Ketu" + 1 sign should equal the Sun's original position.
Exercise 5B โ Gulika (Day Birth). Dinmana = 24 ghati exactly. Birth is on Wednesday, daytime. Find Wednesday's day Dhruvanka from Lesson ยง5.2's table, compute Dinmana รท 8, then multiply by the Dhruvanka to get the Ishta Kala.
Exercise 5C โ Pranapada Offset Rule. Given a base time-conversion offset of 3 signs 0ยฐ, compute the total offset to add to the Sun's position for each sign-type case (Movable / Fixed / Dual), both before and after mod-12 reduction.
Exercise 5D โ Auspicious Check. If Pranapada, once fully calculated, falls in the 6th house from the Ascendant, is the birth auspicious or inauspicious per v.73โ74? What if it falls in the 9th house?
Exercise 5E โ Your Own Chart. If you know your Sun's exact longitude at birth, compute your own Dhuma chain. If you don't have this data precisely, note that explicitly rather than estimating โ the same applies to attempting the Gulika calculation if you know your exact birth time.
Chart Clinic. Lesson S01-M02-L06: Upagrahas, Gulika, and Pranapada โ Application โ focused on correct calculation, not yet interpretation (that's Ch. 27, Semester 2). If you don't have your exact birth time to the minute, this Chart Clinic can be marked "deferred" rather than forced.
6. Reflection Questions¶
(For your journal. No single right answer.)
- This lesson's Upagraha dignity table is explicitly sourced from an outside Tamil text, not BPHS itself. How should that affect the confidence level you assign to any interpretation built on it, compared to a claim taken directly from Parashara's verse?
- Today's Chart Clinic is scoped to "correct calculation" rather than full interpretation, deferred to Ch. 27. Do you find that a satisfying stopping point, or does it feel incomplete? Either answer is fine โ just notice your own reaction to a technique introduced without its payoff yet.
- In one paragraph, explain why this lesson's Upagraha dignity table (exaltation/debilitation/own sign) should be held to a different evidentiary standard than the exaltation/debilitation table you learned in Lesson 4 for the actual grahas.
Check Answers โ Chart Observations & Application
ยง5A โ Dhuma Chain
Sun at Leo 10ยฐ (4s10ยฐ): Dhuma = 8s23ยฐ20โฒ. Vyatipata = 3s6ยฐ40โฒ. Parivesha = 9s6ยฐ40โฒ. Indra Chapa = 2s23ยฐ20โฒ. Chain-"Ketu" = 3s10ยฐ00โฒ. Check: 3s10ยฐ + 1s = 4s10ยฐ = Sun's original position โ.
ยง5B โ Gulika (Day Birth)
Wednesday day Dhruvanka = 4. Dinmana รท 8 = 24 รท 8 = 3 ghati. ร 4 = 12 ghati = Ishta Kala.
ยง5C โ Pranapada Offset Rule
| Sun's sign type | Total offset (before reduction) | Reduced (mod 12 signs) |
|---|---|---|
| Movable | 3s0ยฐ | 3s0ยฐ |
| Fixed | 3s0ยฐ + 8s = 11s0ยฐ | 11s0ยฐ (already < 12) |
| Dual | 3s0ยฐ + 4s = 7s0ยฐ | 7s0ยฐ |
ยง5D โ Auspicious Check
6th house from Ascendant: not in {2,5,9,4,10,11} โ inauspicious. 9th house: is in the list โ auspicious.
Module 2 is now complete. Next: Module 3, Chapter 4, "Zodiacal Signs Described" โ the module-3/module-2 cluster shares a review and Module Test before Semester 1 continues.
Chart Clinic¶
Chart used: my own natal chart (if precise birth time is known โ see note below) Stage: 1, but scoped narrowly to calculation accuracy, not interpretation (interpretation is deferred to Ch. 27, Semester 2).
Before You Begin¶
This is the first Chart Clinic in the course where precision of your own birth data matters directly โ Gulika and Pranapada are sensitive to exact birth time in a way L1โL5's factors were not. If you don't have your birth time to reasonable precision (within a few minutes), mark this Chart Clinic "Deferred โ insufficient data precision" rather than forcing a calculation on a guessed time. That is a legitimate, honest outcome, not a failure to complete the exercise.
Step 0 โ Calculate (if data permits)¶
- Compute your own Dhuma chain from your Sun's natal longitude.
- If you know your birth time and day/night duration, compute your own Gulika's Ishta Kala.
- Note: full interpretation of what these points mean in your chart is intentionally deferred โ today's clinic is a calculation check, not a reading.
Steps 1โ7 โ Scoped Reasoning Chain¶
Since interpretation is deferred, today's seven-step chain is scoped narrowly:
| Step | Your entry |
|---|---|
| 1. Observation โ your computed Dhuma (and Gulika, if data permits) position | |
| 2. Relevant BPHS Principle โ Ch.3 v.61โ70 | |
| 3. Supporting Evidence โ did your consistency check (chain-Ketu + 1 sign = original Sun) pass? | |
| 4. Contradicting Evidence โ if the check failed, where might the arithmetic have gone wrong? Redo it before concluding anything is wrong with the method. | |
| 5. Interpretation โ narrowly scoped to: "my calculation is verified correct" or "my calculation needs rechecking" โ not a life-outcome interpretation yet | |
| 6. Confidence Level โ based on arithmetic verification, not life-outcome matching | |
| 7. Reflection โ how did it feel to do a Chart Clinic that deliberately stops short of interpretation? Preview: Ch. 27 (Semester 2) is where this gets completed. |
Reviewed for calculation accuracy and honest use of the "deferred" option if birth-time precision is insufficient โ not for any life-outcome claim, which is out of scope today.
