Module 7 Reflection Questions — Judgement of Houses¶

This chapter's Notes bracket "evil houses" as the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 12th — a list that doesn't match Ch. 8's own stated Trik-sthana definition (6th, 8th, 12th only), and the underlying Sanskrit term's own "ādi" ("and others/etc.") suggests the bracket was never meant to be a closed list at all. Now that you've seen one clear case of a translator's gloss sitting looser than a previously defined technical term, what will you personally do the next time you meet a similar mismatch in a later chapter — treat the newer bracket as an update to the earlier definition, treat the earlier definition as authoritative and the bracket as loose paraphrase, or something else? Justify your answer using how this lesson itself chose to handle the mismatch (flagging it rather than reconciling it).

The prosperity/affliction rule has two required halves, and only one (occupation/aspect) is usable before Ch. 47 is studied. Suppose a fellow student, eager to finish their Chart Clinic quickly, decided to guess at a planet's Avastha rather than leave that half of the rule honestly unresolved. Using this lesson's own reasoning for why it left Avastha untaught rather than folding in a quick explanation, argue whether that student's shortcut is a reasonable time-saver or a real methodological error — and be specific about what, concretely, would be lost if the guess turned out wrong.

The lesson flags two separate places where the translator had to choose between competing readings — the 5th house's "प्रबंधकम्" and the 6th house's "मातुलान्तकशंकानां" — and asks you to treat both as genuine acknowledged variance rather than error. Having now seen two such cases inside one short, sixteen-verse chapter, what should that tell you about how often this kind of textual variance is likely to show up elsewhere in BPHS, and how should that change the confidence with which you state any single house-signification as "the" BPHS position going forward?

The Module 7 Overview describes this module as deliberately "recall/classification-weighted... not deep-interpretation-weighted," with real interpretation reserved for Semester 2. Having now worked through the single lesson this module contains, was that shallow, index-level treatment actually sufficient for what the chapter is trying to do, or did you find yourself wanting to interpret further than the material allowed? If the latter, name specifically what pulled you toward that temptation, and how this module's own stated scope addresses it directly.
