5. Homework โ Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Classification and applied technique โ not Vimshopaka Bala calculation (deferred, see Decision Journal Entry 8).
Exercise 5A โ House Classification Drill. For each house below, state its Kendra/Panaphara/Apoklima status, whether it is Trikona, Trik-sthana, and/or Upachaya, and its alternate Sanskrit name: 4th House; 8th House; 11th House. Then, without looking, write out all twelve houses' classification and alternate name, and check against Lesson ยง5.2.
Exercise 5B โ Alternate Ascendant Matching. For each topic, name the correct planet-as-Lagna and the house counted from it: Spouse; Progeny; Death/longevity.
Exercise 5C โ Apply to Your Own Chart. Using your own chart's Sun and Moon signs, identify your Surya Lagna's 9th house (father) and your Chandra Lagna's 11th house (gains) โ record what sign/house each falls in. No interpretation required, only accurate identification. Then identify your Chandra Lagna (Moon's sign) and re-examine your 1st/4th/2nd/9th/11th houses from the Moon instead of from your natal Ascendant โ note anything that changes.
Chart Clinic. Lesson S01-M05-L04: House Classification, Vimshopaka Bala (Concept), and Planets as Alternate Ascendants โ Application โ Stage 1: applies house classification and the planets-as-alternate-ascendants technique to your own chart.
6. Reflection Questions¶
(For your journal. No single right answer.)
- This module has now caught four distinct textual inconsistencies (Decision Journal Entries 5โ8) across Ch. 5โ8. Does this change your overall confidence in this translation, or does it feel like ordinary noise in a centuries-old technical text passed through translation?
- The planets-as-alternate-ascendants technique (v.39โ43) significantly expands how many "starting points" a chart reading can use. Does this feel empowering (more tools) or risky (more room for cherry-picking a convenient reading)?
- In one short paragraph, explain why BPHS might place the house-classification vocabulary (v.33โ38) directly before the alternate-ascendants technique (v.39โ43) rather than in its own dedicated chapter โ what's the practical link between the two?
Check Answers โ Chart Observations & Application
ยง5A โ House Classification Drill
- 4th House: Kendra; part of Chaturasra (4th & 8th); not Trikona; not Trik-sthana; not Upachaya. Alternate name: Bandhu.
- 8th House: Panaphara; part of Chaturasra; Trik-sthana; not Upachaya. Alternate name: Randhra.
- 11th House: Panaphara; not Trikona; not Trik-sthana; Upachaya. Alternate name: Laabha.
ยง5B โ Alternate Ascendant Matching
- Spouse: Venus, 7th house from Venus.
- Progeny: Jupiter, 5th house from Jupiter.
- Death/longevity: Saturn, 8th house from Saturn (also the 12th, for expenditure).
Module 5 is now complete. Next: S1-M6 (Ch. 9 โ Aspects of the Signs).
Chart Clinic¶
Chart used: my own natal chart Stage: 1 โ The Mirror
Step 0 โ Look Up¶
Identify your natal Ascendant's Kendra houses (1st/4th/7th/10th signs) and your Chandra Lagna (Moon's sign).
Steps 1โ7 โ Full Reasoning Chain¶
| Step | Your entry |
|---|---|
| 1. Observation โ what occupies your natal 11th house (gains) versus your 11th house counted from the Moon (Chandra Lagna) | |
| 2. Relevant BPHS Principle โ Ch. 8 v.40, the Chandra Lagna technique | |
| 3. Supporting Evidence โ does either reading (natal 11th, or 11th-from-Moon) seem to better match your own known experience of gains/income? | |
| 4. Contradicting Evidence โ actively look for it | |
| 5. Interpretation โ do the two readings agree, conflict, or simply offer different angles? | |
| 6. Confidence Level โ strong / probable / tentative / speculative | |
| 7. Reflection โ has using an alternate Ascendant changed your reading meaningfully, or mostly confirmed what the natal chart already suggested? |
Source Citation¶
Cite Ch. 8, v.40 (Chandra Lagna) for the technique used.
Self-Review Before Submitting¶
- Every principle cited traces to today's actual assigned reading
- Contradicting evidence was genuinely sought, not skipped
- Confidence level reflects the strength of the evidence, not how confident you feel
- No conclusion is stated more strongly than the evidence supports
This is reviewed for: correct application of the alternate-ascendant technique, honest comparison between the natal and alternate readings, and no overclaiming โ not for a complete verdict on which Lagna is "right."
