Module 2 — Planetary Characters and Description¶

Module title: Planetary Characters and Description — Building the Graha Profile Chapters: Volume 1, Ch. 3, "Planetary Characters and Description" (verses 1–74) Corresponds to: S1-M2 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: the syllabus originally guessed 3 lessons for this module. Having now read the full chapter, that estimate was too coarse — Ch. 3 is ~74 verses across 37 printed pages (12–49), covering ten distinct sub-topics from basic definitions through calculation-heavy Upagraha/Gulika/Pranapada work. Per the course philosophy (workload scales to actual complexity), this module is 6 lessons, roughly double the density of Module 1. This is expected — Ch. 3 is, by page count, one of the longest chapters in either volume.

Purpose¶

Module 1 established why a graha can signify anything (Ch. 1–2). Module 2 is where that abstract premise turns into an actual working toolkit: every fact needed to describe a single planet in isolation — its name, its benefic/malefic status, what it governs, what it looks like, what it's made of, where it's strong, what it likes, its dignity in a sign, its relationships with other planets, and the shadow points (Upagrahas, Gulika, Pranapada) computed from it. This is the single densest concentration of "planet facts" anywhere in BPHS, and it is the direct prerequisite for every house-by-house and yoga-based judgment in Semester 2.

Module Objectives¶

By the end of this module I should be able to:

Distinguish a graha from a nakshatra and explain the Ascendant (Lagna) as a concept.
Identify the natural benefic/malefic status of each of the nine grahas, including Mercury's and the Moon's conditional status.
Explain each planet's core signification (what it "is" — soul, mind, strength, etc.) and compare planets by governance (cabinet rank, deity, gender, primordial element, guna, caste).
Describe each planet's classical physical appearance and identify its bodily, material, temporal, and botanical correspondences (dhatu, abode, taste, tree, season).
Calculate a planet's dignity — exaltation, debilitation, Mooltrikona, or own sign — given its sign and degree.
Apply the natural, temporary, and five-fold (compound) relationship system to determine how two planets relate in a specific chart.
Calculate the position of a non-luminous Upagraha (Dhuma and its chain) and Gulika, given a birth's solar longitude and day/night length.
Locate the exact verse for any claim in this module and correctly label it (Explicit / Translator commentary / Requires verification / etc.).
Verify, directly from Ch. 3 verse text, the cross-reference flagged in Module 1 (Ch. 3 Sloka 20 = primordial elements; Sloka 22 = Sattva/Rajas/Tamas classification) — resolving that "Requires verification" item.

Workbook / Homework / Application / Quiz Plan¶

Scaled per lesson to actual density — L1 and L2 are moderate (definitional + a long but readable list of correspondences); L3 is reference-heavy (expect more matching/table exercises, less essay-style reflection, since most of its content is lookup-table material); L4 is calculation-focused (dignity determination drills); L5 is rule-application-focused (relationship lookups); L6 is the heaviest calculation load in the module (Upagraha/Gulika arithmetic) and will get the most worked examples and the lightest quiz-question count per item, trading breadth for depth.

Chart Clinic Plan¶

L1–L3: light or none — mostly definitional/descriptive material without a clear single chart-factor to test yet.
L4 (Dignity): first genuine Stage 1 Chart Clinic — the student determines the dignity (exalted/debilitated/Mooltrikona/own/neutral) of each of their own natal planets and tests it against known life outcomes for that planet's signification.
L5 (Relationships): Stage 1 continues — determine the five-fold relationship between the student's own planets and observe whether "friendly" placements correspond to smoother life outcomes for that combination.
L6 (Upagrahas/Gulika): optional/deferred — these shadow points need more chart-judgment context (which appears in Semester 2, Ch. 27) to interpret meaningfully; L6's Chart Clinic will focus on the calculation itself being performed correctly, not yet on full interpretation.

Chart Clinic worksheets are self-service: I do not hold or need your birth data to build them. Each one prompts you to look up your own real chart and reason through the seven-step structure yourself.

Module Test Plan¶

Module 2 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 2 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Module 2 and Module 3 previously shared one combined test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for either module.
