Module Test: S01-M04 — Locating Planets and the Ascendant (Ch. 5)

Module 4 is a single, self-contained lesson — the manual method for correcting almanac data to an exact birth moment and deriving the Ascendant, 10th House, and remaining houses. This test checks the method's structure and its purpose, not memorized arithmetic.

  1. Explain, in your own words, why Chapter 5's manual planetary-position method is taught in this course despite being "superseded by modern software." What specifically does it protect a student from trusting blindly?

  1. The lesson's own worked example (Hapur, 2-6-1951) shows the Sun's corrected position appearing as both "1s 18°8′12″" and "1s 18°8′22″" at different points in the same worked example. Is this discrepancy Explicitly stated in BPHS as two different valid values, a translator/transcription inconsistency worth flagging, or something this course has silently resolved? Which of the two figures is consistent with the worked example's own later arithmetic (the Saayana Sun value used in Stage 4), and how do you know?

  1. In one paragraph, explain what Chapter 5's five-stage procedure (Pankti correction → Moon's exact position → Ascendant → 10th House → remaining houses by trisection) demonstrates about how every later lesson's chart data actually gets produced, and why "the software will handle it" is not a complete substitute for understanding that a chart's accuracy still depends on the birth time, birthplace coordinates, and Ayanamsha a student supplies.

1. Ishta Kaala: the exact elapsed time from sunrise to the birth moment (Ch. 5 v.1) — the master time input for the whole manual chart-construction method. Swodaya: a sign's rising-time at the birthplace's own latitude, used to find the Ascendant (Ch. 5 v.12–19½). Lankodaya: a sign's rising-time at the equator (zero latitude), used as a fixed reference to find the 10th House (Ch. 5 v.20–22½).

Accept any answer noting that Ch. 5's manual method makes visible what software output conceals by default: the sensitivity of every downstream figure (planetary positions, Ascendant, houses) to small errors in birth time, Ayanamsha, and birthplace coordinates. Part 3 — Correction of False Statements

4. This is a genuine, acknowledged internal inconsistency in the worked example, flagged rather than silently resolved (the lesson's own §10 Source References notes it explicitly, without picking a "correct" figure). Working the arithmetic forward: Stage 4 uses "Saayana Sun (Nirayana Sun + Ayanamsha of 21°46′55″) = 2s 9°55′17″." Checking each candidate — 1s 18°8′22″ + 21°46′55″ = 2s 9°55′17″ (matches exactly), while 1s 18°8′12″ + 21°46′55″ = 2s 9°55′7″ (does not match). So 1s 18°8′22″ is the figure the worked example's own later arithmetic actually carries forward — a student can determine this by checking the two candidates against Stage 4's stated result rather than guessing or picking arbitrarily. 5. No single correct wording — graded for tracing the five stages in order (Pankti correction of the almanac's fixed-reference planetary data; refining the Moon's position via Bhayaata/Bhabhoga since her motion is too fast/uneven for the Pankti correction alone; deriving the Ascendant from Palbha-based Swodaya values; the parallel 10th-House procedure using Lankodaya; trisecting the remaining ten houses) and connecting this to the conclusion that every future lesson's interpretive work assumes an already-finished chart whose accuracy is only as good as its three human-supplied inputs — birth time, birthplace, and Ayanamsha. A response that only recites the five stages without connecting them to "why this matters for trusting a software chart" should be marked for revision.
