5. Homework — Chart Observation and Application

Skill level: Observation / Classification / Recognition (still pre-technical — no chart is used in this exercise; the "chart" you're reading is the verse text itself).

Exercise 5A — Sort and Classify. Below are the nine grahas in a shuffled, non-canonical order. For each, name its avatāra and classify it as Pūrṇa or Partial, using only Ch. 2. Do not consult outside mythology.

Exercise 5B — Cross-Check. The chapter names the four Pūrṇāvatāras in two separate places: once directly (v.2) and once as part of the full nine-planet list (v.5–7). Write out both lists side by side and confirm they agree. If you find any discrepancy, stop and re-read both verses — you have likely misread one of them, since the source text is internally consistent here.

Exercise 5C — Simple Reasoning. Two of the four Pūrṇāvatāras (Rama, Krishna) correspond to the Sun and Moon — the two grahas BPHS elsewhere calls the "luminaries," distinct from the five star-planets. The other two Pūrṇāvatāras (Narasimha, Varaha) correspond to Mars and Rahu — not luminaries. Based only on Ch. 2's text, is there a stated reason the four Pūrṇāvatāras are exactly these four grahas rather than some other four? If BPHS does not give a stated reason, say so plainly rather than inventing one — this is a case for the "Not located in the source" label, not for speculation.

Exercise 5D — The Avatāra Table. Build a table with columns Graha | Avatāra | Pūrṇa? (Y/N) | One-line mythic association. Fill it from the verse text, not from outside knowledge of Hindu mythology — if BPHS itself doesn't state a detail, don't add it. Leave a blank "Ch. 3 deity" column to fill in once you reach Chapter 3.

Exercise 5E — Running Chart Lab. Add a dated entry: does today's lesson change or confirm the working assumption you wrote after Ch. 1 ("the planets in a chart are conscious significators of a soul carrying karma")? Write one sentence either way.

6. Reflection Questions

1. Chapter 2 explicitly ranks the avatāras (4 "complete," 5 "partial"). Does this create a hierarchy among the grahas themselves in your intuition — and if so, is that intuition something BPHS itself supports, or something you're projecting onto it? (Revisit this after Ch. 29, Shadbala — do not assume yet that "Pūrṇa" means "stronger" in the technical sense.)
2. The chapter ends (v.11–13) with a strong claim about the necessity of astrology and a warning to those who dismiss it. How does this rhetorical move change how you, as the reader, are meant to receive the technical chapters that follow?
3. Write one short paragraph connecting today's lesson back to Lesson 1: how is Chapter 2's nine-planet list a concrete instance of the abstract claim Chapter 1 made? Be specific rather than restating both chapters separately.

§5B — Cross-Check

v.2's list (Rama, Krishna, Narasimha, Varaha) and v.5–7's derived list (Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu → same four avatāras) agree exactly. If your two lists didn't match, re-check whether you assigned Varaha to Rahu (v.6–7: "सैहिकेयस्य सूकरः" — Saihikeya/Rahu's avatāra is the boar) rather than mistakenly to Ketu.

§5C — Simple Reasoning

Not located in the source. Ch. 2 asserts the four-way Pūrṇa classification but does not state why these specific four grahas (rather than some other four) qualify. Any reasoning connecting this to "luminaries vs. star-planets" or similar is a student-generated hypothesis, not a BPHS claim — correctly labeled "Not located in the source," and should not be presented as if BPHS argues for it.

This is where the avatāra/deity groundwork from Chapters 1–2 becomes the first real technical content: names, benefic/malefic status, governance, and (among much else) the exact cross-reference to Ch. 3 Sloka 20 and 22 flagged as "requires verification" in Lesson 1.
