Module 3 Review — Zodiacal Signs Described

One-Page Summary

Chapter 4 opens by naming Hora's own etymology (Ahorātra minus its first and last syllable) and then makes a structural claim parallel to Module 1's cosmology: the zodiac is not an abstract 360° measuring scale, but Kalapurusha — Time Personified, a form of Vishnu — with each of the 12 signs corresponding to a specific limb of that cosmic body (Aries=head through Pisces=feet). This grounds a real diagnostic technique: an afflicted, benefic-unsupported sign tends to weaken or injure its corresponding body part.

Lesson 1 then gave four independent classification systems for the 12 signs: modal (movable/fixed/dual), a sign-level benefic/malefic system (kept carefully distinct from Module 2's planet-level one), gender, and dhātu-triplicity (bilious/windy/tridhatu/phlegmatic — the classical fire/earth/air/water groupings, named by Ayurvedic humor rather than element).

Lesson 2 gave each sign's individual profile — complexion, body/foot type, day/night strength, direction, residence, caste, guna, rising type, and lord — reference material for the rest of the course. It also surfaced genuine gaps in this translation (Scorpio's rising type most notably, logged in the Decision Journal) and two signs (Sagittarius, Capricorn) with degree-based split physical natures unlike any other sign. The lord table was cross-checked against Module 2's own-sign dignity assignments and found fully consistent.

Lesson 3 closed the chapter with something structurally different: Nisheka Lagna, a self-contained technique estimating the time of conception from Saturn's, Gulika's, the Ascendant's, and the 9th house's positions — directly requiring Module 2's Gulika calculation as an input, with a fully worked numerical example in the source.

Why it matters for chart reading: every sign attribute learned here is one layer of judgment — never the whole verdict. A planet's own condition (Module 2: dignity, relationships) and the house that sign occupies both still matter independently. This module's recurring caution against mechanical stereotyping is as important as any single fact it teaches.

Flashcard-Ready Key Terms

Front Back
Hora's etymology (v.1)? Ahorātra minus first and last syllable
What is Kalapurusha? Time Personified — the zodiac as Vishnu's cosmic body
Aries = which Kalapurusha limb? Head
Pisces = which Kalapurusha limb? Feet
The 4 movable signs? Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
The 4 fixed signs? Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
The 4 dual signs? Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
Sign-level Krūra+male signs? Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius
Fire-triplicity (bilious) signs? Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Water-triplicity (phlegmatic) signs? Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Which sign is Ubhayodaya (both-rising)? Pisces
Which two signs have degree-based split physical natures? Sagittarius, Capricorn
Which sign's rising type is not stated in this translation? Scorpio
Nisheka Lagna's 4 required inputs? Saturn, Gulika, Ascendant, 9th house
What does Nisheka Lagna estimate? The time of conception

Common Mistakes

  • Conflating sign-level and planet-level benefic/malefic. A Krūra sign does not make a benefic planet malefic — these are two independent classification systems (Ch. 4 v.5 vs. Ch. 3 v.11).
  • Treating the Kalapurusha-limb technique as automatic. The translator's own worked example requires the sign to be afflicted without any benefic mitigation — a planet merely occupying a sign isn't enough on its own.
  • Overclaiming from unoccupied-sign tendencies. Rising-type and modal-classification "general tendencies" (§5.5, L2) describe an unoccupied sign — a real chart's actual planets, their dignity, and their aspects change the picture.
  • Filling gaps from outside knowledge. Scorpio's missing rising type, Gemini's missing caste/guna, and similar gaps should be reported as "not stated," never silently filled from general Jyotish convention.
  • Forgetting Nisheka Lagna's negative-avoidance step. When the minuend is smaller than the subtrahend in either house-difference calculation, 12 signs must be added first — skipping this produces a meaningless negative result.

Self-Assessment Checklist

  • I can explain the Kalapurusha frame and its diagnostic technique.
  • I can classify any sign across all four Lesson-1 systems.
  • I can state any sign's individual profile, or correctly say "not stated" where the text is silent.
  • I have personally verified the sign-lord cross-check against Module 2.
  • I can perform the Nisheka Lagna calculation, including the invisible-half adjustment and negative-avoidance step.
  • I have completed Chart Clinics for L1 and L2, and either completed or honestly deferred L3's.
  • I have logged the Scorpio rising-type gap in the Decision Journal rather than guessing at it.

Clinical Competency

By completing this module, I should now be able to:

  • Identify the sign classifications taught in Chapter 4 (modal, sign benefic/malefic, gender, dhātu-triplicity, Kalapurusha limb, rising type).
  • Explain the practical difference between sign-level and planet-level benefic/malefic classification.
  • Locate the supporting BPHS verses for any specific sign attribute I state.
  • Apply sign classifications to my own natal chart's Ascendant and cross-check its lord against Module 2's dignity table.
  • Separate sign symbolism from unsupported personality stereotypes — state a sign's classification without claiming it "guarantees" or "always" produces a trait.
  • Explain how a sign modifies a planet or Lagna without ignoring that planet's own dignity, relationships, and house placement.
  • Recognize when Chapter 4's material is descriptive background rather than sufficient for a final chart judgment.
  • State my confidence and limitations clearly — including reporting genuine gaps in the source (Scorpio's rising type) rather than filling them from outside knowledge.
  • Perform the Nisheka Lagna calculation correctly, and distinguish BPHS's own confidence level between its two claimed uses (womb-experience vs. parental longevity).

If every box above is checked, Module 3 is complete. If not, identify the specific gap and revisit that lesson before the shared Module 2–3 Test.
