1. Chapter Purpose¶
Establishes the theoretical machinery behind functional (chart-specific) benefic/malefic classification: four house-lordship tiers, the natural benefic/malefic hierarchy refined by lunar phase, and the precise conditions that create (or block) a Yoga Karaka.

Understanding
- U1. Accept any answer reasoning toward: neutralizing rather than merely leaving unaffected keeps the angle-lordship rule symmetric — it explains both why natural benefics can fail to deliver their expected good and why natural malefics in the same position aren't automatically harmful, rather than requiring two separate, unrelated rules.
- U2. Refines it, not contradicts it. "Always auspicious" describes what Trikona lordship contributes on its own; v.15 addresses what happens when the same relationship also carries a second, competing lordship (Trishadaya) — the refinement is about combinations, not a reversal of the base rule.
- U3. The Moon is fully benefic at full Moon, remains benefic through the 7th tithi of the waning half, grows increasingly malefic from the 8th tithi to Amavasya (new Moon, fully malefic), then decreases in malefic influence back to full benefic by the 7th tithi of the waxing half.
- U4. The Ascendant is simultaneously a Kendra (1st house, an angle) and a Trikona in the special sense BPHS gives it — the Lord of the Ascendant therefore always carries the Trikona "always auspicious" quality, immune to the Kendra-lordship neutralizing effect that would otherwise apply to a natural benefic or malefic in an angle.
- U5. Per v.2, Trikona (5th/9th) lordship is always auspicious, regardless of the planet's natural benefic or malefic status — trine lordship overrides natural nature entirely, unlike Kendra lordship, which merely neutralizes it.
