06 — BPHS Master Chart Analysis Procedure

The full chart-analysis procedure is still being developed as the course progresses. This page currently gathers only the principles already established in the material completed so far — it will grow, one verified step at a time, as later modules are studied.

Scope (what this document will eventually contain)

A single, repeatable, source-cited procedure for judging a natal chart, assembled in this order as the course reaches each topic:

Concepts from Module 1

Not a procedure step — no chart is judged yet at this point in the course. These are the two axioms the entire numbered procedure above will rest on once it starts being written at S2-M21. Recorded here because Module 1 is complete and these premises are the only things it actually established.

  1. The grahas carry a predominance of paramātmā-aṁśa (a portion of the Supreme Consciousness), not jīvāṁśa. This is why a planet's placement is treated as capable of signifying real outcomes in a life, rather than as arbitrary symbolic bookkeeping.   2. Each graha is doctrinally linked to a specific incarnation of Viṣṇu, with four of the nine (Sun/Rāma, Moon/Kṛṣṇa, Mars/Narasiṁha, Rahu/Varāha) classified as wholly paramātmā (Pūrṇāvatāra) and the remaining five carrying some jīvāṁśa admixture. Viṣṇu is stated to have incarnated as the grahas specifically to deliver the results of karma. Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1, Chapter 2, verses 1–13 (printed page 9). Caution carried forward from Lesson 2: this Pūrṇa/partial classification is mythological, not a technical strength measure — it must not be conflated with Shadbala (Ch. 29) or any other strength doctrine once those are studied.

Concepts from Module 2

Still not a procedure step — these are the raw technical tools Module 2 (Ch. 3) built, which the numbered procedure will draw on starting at S2-M21. Listed here for traceability, not as an early draft of the procedure itself.

  1. Benefic/malefic classification (natural, with Mercury and the Moon conditional) — Ch. 3 v.11.
  2. Planetary identity profile: core signification, cabinet rank, complexion, deity, sex, primordial element, caste, guna — Ch. 3 v.12–22.
  3. Physical and material correspondences: dhātu, abode, time-period, taste, tree, season; a preview (not the full system) of directional strength (Digbala) — Ch. 3 v.23–48. The full Digbala/Shadbala system is still pending (Ch. 29).
  4. Dignity: exaltation, debilitation, Mooltrikona, own sign, each with exact signs and degrees — Ch. 3 v.49–54.
  5. Relationships: natural (fixed), temporary (chart-specific), and compound five-fold; the Ratio of Effects priority hierarchy combining dignity and relationship into a single percentage — Ch. 3 v.55–60.
  6. Computed shadow points: the non-luminous Upagrahas (Dhuma chain), Gulika, and Pranapada — Ch. 3 v.61–74. Calculation only; interpretation is deferred to Ch. 27 (Semester 2).

Concepts from Module 3

Still not a procedure step — Ch. 4 is descriptive/classificatory sign material and one narrow calculation technique, not yet chart-judgment method. Listed for traceability only.

  1. The Kalapurusha frame: the zodiac as Vishnu's cosmic body, with each sign mapped to a limb — a real diagnostic technique (afflicted, benefic-unsupported sign → weakness/injury in the corresponding body part) — Ch. 4 v.1–4½. Verified provisional status: this is a genuine BPHS-stated technique, not merely procedural organization, but its trigger condition (affliction without benefic mitigation) must be checked before applying it — see Ch. 4 v.4½ Notes.
  2. Sign classification systems: modal (movable/fixed/dual), sign-level benefic/malefic (independent of the planet-level system in item 3 above), gender, and dhātu-triplicity — Ch. 4 v.5. Caution carried forward: never merge this with the planet-level benefic/malefic classification without explicit textual support.
  3. Individual sign profiles: complexion, body/foot type, day/night strength, direction, residence, caste, guna, rising type, and lord for each of the 12 signs (with several genuine gaps in this translation, logged rather than filled) — Ch. 4 v.6–24. Cross-checked and confirmed consistent against item 6's (Module 2) own-sign dignity table.
  4. Nisheka Lagna: a self-contained technique estimating conception timing from Saturn, Gulika, the Ascendant, and the 9th house — Ch. 4 v.25–30. A future integration point, not yet connected to the numbered procedure below; flag for reconsideration once Semester 2's timing-related chapters are reached, to see whether it has any bearing on life-event timing generally or remains a standalone technique.

Concepts from Module 4

Still not a procedure step — Ch. 5 is the computational foundation beneath every chart-judgment step above, not itself an interpretive step.

  1. Manual derivation of planetary positions, the Moon's exact longitude, the Ascendant, the 10th House, and the remaining house cusps from an almanac and elapsed time — Ch. 5 v.1–24½. Historical/reference-only in practice (modern software performs this instantly), but establishes what a chart's numbers depend on: exact birth time, Ayanamsha, and birthplace latitude — a caution worth carrying into every later step that assumes chart data is simply correct.

Concepts from Module 5

Still not a procedure step — these extend the D1 chart's toolkit (alternate Ascendants, house vocabulary, a Varga strength framework) without yet reaching full chart judgment.

  1. Special Ascendants: Bhava Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghati Lagna, each recomputed from sunrise at a different time-division and used alongside (not instead of) the natal Lagna — Ch. 6 v.1–9. Includes the Pravritti/Poorti proportional house-strength concept — Ch. 6 v.10–12.
  2. Varnada Dasha: a sign-based (not planet-based) Dasha system deriving a starting point and duration from the natal Ascendant and Hora Lagna — Ch. 6 v.13–27. Provisional status: BPHS's own two worked examples apply the stated counting rule inconsistently (see Decision Journal Entry 7); this course treats the rule as reliable only where the sum/difference of the two counted values is ≤12.
  3. The sixteen Vargas, named and their practical uses (D1 physique, D2 wealth, D3 siblings, D4 fortune, D7 progeny, D9 spouse, D10 status/authority, D12 parents, D16 conveyances, D20 worship, D24 learning, D27 strength/weakness, D30 evil effects, D40/D45/D60 general indications) — Ch. 7 v.1–4, Ch. 8 v.1–8. Full construction technique deferred to S3-M22 — only names and uses are established here.
  4. House classification: Kendra (1,4,7,10), Panaphara (2,5,8,11), Apoklima (3,6,9,12), Trikona (5,9), Trik-sthana/Dusthana (6,8,12), Chaturasra (4,8), Upachaya (3,6,10,11) — Ch. 8 v.33–36. A house can belong to more than one classification simultaneously (e.g., the 6th is both Trik-sthana and Upachaya).
  5. Planets as alternate Ascendants: for father (Sun, 9th), general 10th/11th matters (Sun), five house-topics generally (Moon), younger sibling (Mars, 3rd), 6th-house matters (Mercury), progeny (Jupiter, 5th), spouse (Venus, 7th), death/longevity and expenditure (Saturn, 8th/12th) — Ch. 8 v.39–43.
  6. Vimshopaka Bala — concept and formula only (Swavishwa × Vargavishwa ÷ 20, summed across a chosen Varga grouping) — Ch. 8 v.9–32. Not yet a usable calculation step: the chapter's own worked example contains an internal grading inconsistency (Decision Journal Entry 8); verified calculation practice is deferred to S3-M22.

Concepts from Module 6

Still not a procedure step — aspect is a raw tool used throughout the eventual procedure, not one specific step in it.

  1. Sign aspects (Rashi Drishti): movable↔fixed (except adjacent), dual↔dual, full aspects only — Ch. 9 v.1–9. Two diagram traditions exist (a "prevalent" one this course follows per the translator's own stated preference, and a named alternate from a different edition); both verified against the EPUB.
  2. Planetary aspects (Graha Drishti): every planet aspects 3rd/10th, 5th/9th, 4th/8th (graduated ¼/½/¾), and 7th (full, except Saturn/Jupiter/Mars whose full house is instead 3rd/10th, 5th/9th, 4th/8th respectively) — Ch. 9 v.10–16. Open question, not yet resolved: how Rashi Drishti and Graha Drishti combine in practice when they'd suggest different conclusions — deferred to Ch. 28 (Semester 2).

Concepts from Module 7

Still not a procedure step — a signification index and one general rule, not yet full house-judgment doctrine (that begins in earnest at S2-M10).

  1. The twelve houses' BPHS-given significations (see the full table in Module 7's Judgement of Houses lesson) — Ch. 13 v.2–13.
  2. The house prosperity/affliction rule: occupation/aspect by benefics/own lord (or a good Avastha, or 10th-house placement) = prospering; malefic conjunction, unaspected, evil-house-lord conjunction, planetary-war defeat, or poor Avastha = afflicted — Ch. 13 v.14–16. Only the occupation/aspect half is currently usable — the Avastha half is forward-referenced to Ch. 47 (Semester 2), not yet taught. Terminological caution: the translator's bracketed "evil houses" (3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th) is broader than Ch. 8's own defined Trik-sthana (6th, 8th, 12th) — treat the two as distinct until/unless a later chapter reconciles them.

Concepts from Module 8 — Semester 1's Capstone

Still not a numbered procedure step (that begins at S2-M21), but this is the most load-bearing toolkit item Semester 1 produces — nearly a complete answer to the semester's own stated outcome ("explain the... role of every planet").

  1. The four-tier house-lordship framework: Kendra (1,4,7,10, neutralizes natural tendency), Trikona (5,9, always auspicious), Trishadaya (3,6,11, always inauspicious), Parashraya (12,2,8, effects by association, strongest-to-weakest 8>2>12) — Ch. 36 v.2–7. Stronger tier obstructs weaker when one planet's multiple lordships conflict.
  2. Natural benefic/malefic hierarchy refined: Jupiter, Venus (benefic) > Moon (mediocre, Paksha-Bala-dependent) > Mercury (neutral) > Sun, Saturn, Mars (malefic) — Ch. 36 v.8–10.
  3. Yoga Karaka formation: single-planet Kendra+Trikona dual lordship (strongest case, v.13); or two-planet angle/trine exchange, conjunction, co-occupation, or mutual full aspect (v.11–12). Blocked if either planet is also a Trishadaya lord (v.15).
  4. Rahu/Ketu's effects rule: predominantly the effects of whatever they conjoin, or of their occupied house — no sign lordship assigned in this course (Decision Journal Entry 9) — Ch. 36 v.16. Can become Yoga Karakas via angle/trine placement plus angle-lord/trine-lord conjunction or aspect (v.17).
  5. The complete 12-ascendant functional benefic/malefic/Yoga Karaka/Maraka reference table — see Module 8's Yoga Karakas by Ascendant lesson for the full table — Ch. 36 v.18–44.

Update rules

  • Add a step only after its source module (per the Course Syllabus) has been completed and its BPHS citations verified against the actual text — not from memory or general Jyotish convention.
  • This procedure follows the course's approved source and citation standards.
  • The first real content enters this file at S2-M21 (D1 Synthesis Workshop) — the first point in the course where enough of Volume 1 has been covered to assemble a first-pass D1 judgment procedure. Steps 12–16 (Vargas, Yogas, Dashas, life-area judgment, timing) are added in Semester 3 as those modules complete.
  • Revise earlier steps if a later module reveals the earlier step was incomplete or needs a caveat — note the revision, don't silently overwrite.
