Why this lesson matters: this is the calculation-heaviest lesson in Module 2 โ€” three distinct multi-step procedures (Upagrahas, Gulika, Pranapada), each producing a chart point used in later judgment. Unlike most of this module, these are not descriptive correspondences; they're computed positions that get placed on a chart and read like any planet.

  • Before you read, watch for: the text gives fully worked numerical examples for both Gulika and Pranapada โ€” use them as your primary teaching tool rather than trying to derive the method from the verse alone.
  • Important terms: upagraha, Dhuma, Gulika, Mandi, Dhruvanka, Pranapada.
  • Passages likely to be difficult: the arithmetic uses ghatis and palas (60 palas = 1 ghati, 60 ghatis = 1 day) rather than hours/minutes โ€” convert carefully, and don't mix unit systems mid-calculation.
  • Key questions to hold: the translator's Notes mention that "Gulika" and "Mandi" are treated as identical by most astrologers but as genuinely different points by one specific source (Sarvartha Chintamani) โ€” which definition does BPHS's own verse text actually define?

Explicitly stated in BPHS, a chain of five points computed sequentially from the Sun's longitude at birth:

Worked example from the text (Sun at 3 signs 21ยฐ26โ€ฒ): Dhuma = 8s04ยฐ46โ€ฒ โ†’ Vyatipata = 3s25ยฐ14โ€ฒ โ†’ Parivesha = 9s25ยฐ14โ€ฒ โ†’ Indra Chapa = 2s04ยฐ46โ€ฒ โ†’ this-Ketu = 2s21ยฐ26โ€ฒ โ†’ +1 sign = 3s21ยฐ26โ€ฒ = the Sun's original position. โœ“ (verified โ€” this is a genuine internal check built into the method itself, not just a coincidence of this example)

Important caution: this chain's final point is called "Ketu" in the verse (v.63โ€“64) but is a differently-computed shadow point, not the graha Ketu (the lunar node) taught in L1. Don't conflate them โ€” BPHS itself uses the same name for two different things here, and only context (this specific five-step chain vs. the lunar-node graha) tells you which is meant.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.65: if any of these five Upagrahas conjoins the Sun or Moon, or occupies the Ascendant, it damages (respectively) the native's dynasty, longevity, or wisdom.

5.2 Gulika (v.66โ€“70)

Explicitly stated in BPHS: Gulika is computed from day or night duration divided into 8 portions, each portion "ruled" by a planet in a fixed sequence starting from the weekday's lord; the portion ruled by Saturn is Gulika's portion, and the degree rising at that moment (by proportion) is Gulika's longitude.

Translator commentary supplies the full worked method with day-lord and night-lord tables (reproduced below) and a Dhruvanka (constant) shortcut:

Night-birth Dhruvanka (different sequence, starting 5th from the day's own lord): Sunday=3, Monday=2, Tuesday=1, Wednesday=7, Thursday=6, Friday=5, Saturday=4.

Worked example from the text: day duration (Dinmana) = 33 ghati 52 pala; night duration (Ratrimana) = 60 โˆ’ 33:52 = 26:08. Birth on Wednesday night โ†’ night Dhruvanka = 7. One-eighth of Ratrimana = 26:08 รท 8 = 3:16. Multiply by Dhruvanka: 3:16 ร— 7 = 22:52. Add Dinmana: 22:52 + 33:52 = 56:44 โ€” this is the Ishta Kala (elapsed time used to find the Ascendant). The Ascendant rising at that Ishta Kala is Gulika's longitude.

Translator commentary also notes a real scholarly disagreement: most astrologers treat Gulika and Mandi as identical, but one source (Sarvartha Chintamani) treats them as distinct points with a different Dhruvanka table (reproduced in the Notes) โ€” flagged as "Requires verification" which convention this course will standardize on; BPHS's own verse text (v.66โ€“70) only directly defines the Saturn-portion method used for Gulika above, and does not itself introduce "Mandi" as a separate term โ€” that distinction is entirely translator-supplied context from an outside source.

5.3 Upagraha Dignity (translator table, following v.70)

5.4 Pranapada (v.71โ€“74)

Explicitly stated in BPHS: convert the elapsed time from sunrise to birth (Ishta Kala) into palas, divide by 15. The resulting sign/degree offset is added to the Sun's position โ€” but how depends on the Sun's sign type:

Worked example from the text: birth at 20 ghati 25 pala after sunrise = 1225 palas; รท15 = 81.66 โ†’ reduce mod 12 signs = 9 signs 20ยฐ. If the Sun is at Aries 8ยฐ (movable sign): add directly โ†’ 9s20ยฐ + 0s8ยฐ = 9s28ยฐ = Sagittarius 28ยฐ = Pranapada.

Requires verification: the intermediate step from "81.66" to "9 signs 20ยฐ" is not fully self-explanatory from the printed working alone โ€” the text's own arithmetic here reads ambiguously (it isn't clear whether 81.66 is meant as degrees, signs, or a mixed unit before the mod-12 reduction). The overall method (convert elapsed time to palas, divide by 15, reduce to a 0โ€“11 sign range, then apply the movable/fixed/dual offset rule) is explicit and clear; this one intermediate unit-conversion step is flagged for the record rather than silently smoothed over. Use the simpler worked example in the Application Exercise, where every step is unambiguous, to build the method โ€” then return to this exact example once the ambiguity can be checked against a second source or a worked astrological software cross-check.

Explicitly stated in BPHS, v.73โ€“74: if Pranapada falls in the 2nd, 5th, 9th, 4th, 10th, or 11th house from the natal Ascendant, the birth is auspicious; otherwise, inauspicious.
