Module 3 — Zodiacal Signs Described¶

Module title: Zodiacal Signs Described — The Kalapurusha Frame, Sign Classification, and Nisheka Lagna Chapters: Volume 1, Ch. 4, "Zodiacal Signs Described" (verses 1–30) Corresponds to: S1-M3 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: the syllabus originally estimated 2 lessons ("Kalapurusha/sign classification" and "sign-by-sign nature"). Having now read the full chapter, that estimate missed an entire sub-topic: v.25–30 is a self-contained technical calculation (Nisheka Lagna, conception timing) with no natural home in either of the two originally-planned lessons. This module is 3 lessons. Ch. 4 is far shorter than Ch. 3 (30 verses across 11 printed pages, 50–60, vs. Ch. 3's 74 verses across 37 pages) — so despite gaining a lesson versus the estimate, this module is proportionally much lighter than Module 2, and its workload is scaled down accordingly (see each lesson's plan).

Purpose¶

Module 2 built a complete profile of each planet in isolation. Module 3 builds the stage those planets act on — the twelve signs, framed by BPHS not as an abstract coordinate system but as the literal body of the Kalapurusha (Time Personified, a form of Vishnu). This module also introduces the crucial discipline of separating a sign's own nature from what a planet occupying it does, or what a house made of that sign means — a distinction Semester 2 depends on completely. It closes with a self-contained technical calculation, Nisheka Lagna, that estimates the time of conception from a birth chart.

Module Objectives¶

By the end of this module I should be able to:

Define the Kalapurusha concept and explain why BPHS frames the zodiac as a cosmic body rather than an abstract measurement scale.
Identify all 12 signs in order and the Kalapurusha limb each corresponds to.
Classify each sign by movable/fixed/dual nature, benefic/malefic (Saumya/Krūra) status, gender, and dhātu-triplicity (bilious/windy/tridhatu/phlegmatic).
Compare the sign-based benefic/malefic classification against the planet-based one from Module 2, and distinguish the two rather than conflating them.
Distinguish, in general, a sign's natural attributes from a planet's condition within it, from the meaning of a house made of that sign — three different layers of judgment, not one.
Explain each of the 12 signs' individual profile (complexion, body type, caste, direction, day/night strength, rising type, ruling lord).
Connect each sign's stated lord back to Module 2's own-sign dignity table, and verify the two are internally consistent.
Apply the Kalapurusha-limb framework to a specific sign/house question, without overclaiming beyond what BPHS states.
Interpret, cautiously, the practical significance of rising-type (head/back/both) for result-timing, distinguishing BPHS's own claim from later elaboration.
Calculate Nisheka Lagna (approximate conception timing) given Saturn's, Gulika's, the Ascendant's, and the 9th house's positions.

Scaled down from Module 2's density, matching this chapter's shorter length: L1 carries the heaviest conceptual load (a large translator commentary on Ayurvedic dhātu theory) but a moderate item count; L2 is reference-heavy like Ch. 3's correspondence lessons, but covering fewer, more memorable data points (12 signs × 7 attributes, vs. Ch. 3's 7 planets × many categories); L3 is narrow and calculation-focused, getting the "fewer, deeper" treatment used for Ch. 3's Upagraha lesson.

Chart Clinic Plan (Stage 1 throughout)¶

L1: identify your own Ascendant's classification (movable/fixed/dual, gender, dhātu-triplicity) and test whether the general temperament claims connect to anything you already know about yourself — with explicit caution against stereotyping.
L2: identify your own Ascendant sign's full profile and cross-check its stated lord against Module 2's dignity table for internal consistency.
L3: optional/deferred — Nisheka Lagna requires precise data (Saturn's and Gulika's exact positions, already computed in Module 2 if available) and produces a conception-timing estimate that is difficult to verify against known life history in the way earlier Chart Clinics could. Mark "Deferred" if the supporting data isn't available rather than forcing a calculation on guessed inputs.

Module Test Plan¶

Module 3 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 3 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Module 2 and Module 3 previously shared one combined test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for either module.
