How the ideas Semester 1 actually taught connect to and build on each other — a map of dependencies, not just a list of topics. How the ideas build on each other

Everything starts with Chapters 1–2: the claim that a planet is a real, karma-carrying significator, not just a bookkeeping symbol. Chapter 3 makes that claim usable — it fixes each planet's identity and natural benefic/malefic status, then builds outward from there: physical correspondences, dignity (how strong a planet is by the sign it occupies), relationships between planets, and a combined Ratio of Effects that weighs dignity and relationship together. Chapter 3 also introduces the shadow points — Upagrahas, Gulika, and Pranapada — which Chapter 4's Nisheka Lagna technique later needs, alongside the Ascendant and the sign profiles Chapter 4 establishes.

Chapter 5's manual chart-construction method underlies the special ascendants taught in Chapter 6 (Bhava, Hora, and Ghati Lagna) — they're recomputed the same way as the main Ascendant, just anchored to a different starting point. Varnada Dasha then counts forward from those results. Chapters 7–8 name the sixteen Vargas and use that framework to classify houses (Kendra, Trikona, Trishadaya, Parashraya) and compute Vimshopaka Bala.

That house classification comes back twice more: Chapter 13's house significations reuse the same Kendra/Trikona vocabulary, and Chapter 36 (Yoga Karakas) builds its entire four-tier framework directly on it — refining the natural benefic/malefic status from Chapter 3 rather than replacing it. Chapter 9's aspects feed into one of the two ways a Yoga Karaka can form. Together, the four-tier framework and the formation rule produce the complete twelve-ascendant reference table that closes out Semester 1.

What's still open at the end of Semester 1

A few real gaps are being tracked, not glossed over:

  • Aspect priority. How Rashi Drishti and Graha Drishti (the two aspect systems) should be weighed against each other when they disagree — deferred to Ch. 28 in Semester 2.
  • Shadow-point meaning. The shadow points (Upagrahas, Gulika, Pranapada) are calculated in Module 2, but what they actually signify is deferred to Ch. 27.
  • House prosperity, Avastha half. The occupation/aspect half of the house prosperity rule is usable now; the Avastha half is forward-referenced to Ch. 47.
  • Ratio of Effects vs. full strength. Chapter 3's Ratio of Effects table is a preview; the complete six-fold strength system (Shadbala) is Ch. 29.
  • Vimshopaka Bala's worked example. BPHS's own worked example doesn't fully check out arithmetically — the concept is sound, but that example isn't a safe calculation template yet. Verified practice is deferred to Semester 3.

None of these are this course skipping a step — BPHS itself either resolves them in a later chapter or leaves them genuinely open at this point in the text.

How this map will grow

Semester 2 adds a dense cluster around house significations, house-by-house judgment, house lords, strength (Shadbala/Avastha), Argala, and Marakas — converging on a first full chart-judgment procedure. Semester 3 adds full Varga construction, Bhava Padas, the Yoga catalogs, Dashas, and Ashtakavarga, building toward a final synthesis. Neither is built yet — the course adds one module at a time, only once it's actually been studied.
