5. Homework β Chart Observation and Application¶
Skill level: Calculation, worked step-by-step.
Exercise 5A β Reproduce BPHS's Own Examples. Using Lesson Β§5.2, reproduce all three of BPHS's own worked examples (Bhava Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghati Lagna) by hand, confirming each stated final result.
Exercise 5B β New Numbers (Bhava and Ghati Lagna).
- Bhava Lagna: Ishta Kaala = 20 Ghatiβ00 Pala. Sun's position at sunrise = 4s 0Β°00β²00β³. Compute the Bhava Lagna.
- Ghati Lagna: Ishta Kaala = 10 Ghatiβ20 Pala. Sun's position at sunrise = 2s 5Β°00β²00β³. Compute the Ghati Lagna.
- Hora Lagna (reproduction only): Using BPHS's own numbers (Lesson Β§5.2: Ishta Kaala 16 Ghatiβ30 Pala, offset 6Β°18β², Sun at sunrise 7s20Β°35β²40β³), confirm the book's stated final Hora Lagna (7s26Β°53β²40β³) by simple addition of the offset to the Sun's position. (Hora Lagna's intermediate arithmetic is not fully transparent in this translation β see Decision Journal Entry 6 β so only reproduction of BPHS's own worked example is asked here, not a new-numbers version.)
Exercise 5C β More New Numbers (Bhava and Ghati Lagna, abstract set). (Clearly labelled, unrelated to any real chart β chosen so Bhava Lagna's division-by-5 step has no remainder to carry through further sub-conversion, per Decision Journal Entry 1's precedent for avoiding invented numbers that hit that ambiguous step.)
Given: Ishta Kaala = 25 Ghatiβ00 Pala. Sun's position at sunrise = 6s 12Β°00β²00β³.
- Compute the Bhava Lagna.
- Using the same inputs, compute the Ghati Lagna.
Exercise 5D β One More Ghati Lagna. Ishta Kaala = 8 Ghatiβ10 Pala. Sun's position at sunrise = 3s 0Β°00β²00β³. Compute the Ghati Lagna.
Exercise 5E β Reasoning Check. If two charts have the same natal Lagna but different Ishta Kaalas (i.e., different exact birth times within the same sign-rising window), will their Bhava Lagnas necessarily also be the same? Why or why not?
Exercise 5F β Running Chart Lab. If you know your own Ishta Kaala and sunrise Sun position (from Module 4's Chart Clinic), compute your own Hora Lagna β you'll need it for the next lesson's Varnada Dasha.
Exercise 5G β Your Own Chart. From your own already-cast chart, note your Ishta Kaala and the Sun's sunrise position on your birth date, if known β no calculation required yet unless you want to attempt your own Bhava/Ghati Lagna.
Chart Clinic. Lesson S01-M05-L01: Special Ascendants β Bhava, Hora, and Ghati Lagna β Application β Stage 1, adapted (as in S1-M4-L1): full recomputation of the Special Ascendants by hand is optional, not required β the seven-step reasoning chain (Observation β Principle β Supporting Evidence β Contradicting Evidence β Interpretation β Confidence β Reflection) can be completed with the Special Ascendant sign/degree alone, however obtained.
6. Reflection Questions¶
(For your journal. No single right answer.)
- Now that you've seen BPHS introduce a second, third, and fourth Ascendant for the same birth moment, has your mental model of "the Ascendant" as one fixed point changed?
- The translator's Notes spend far more space on the constellation-vs-ecliptic-point debate than BPHS's own verses do. Does this change how much doctrinal weight you assign that debate?
Check Answers β Chart Observations & Application
Β§5A β Reproduce BPHS's Own Examples
Bhava Lagna = 10s22Β°52β²40β³; Hora Lagna = 7s26Β°53β²40β³; Ghati Lagna = 0s5Β°35β²40β³ β all matching BPHS's own stated results (Lesson Β§5.2).
Β§5B β New Numbers (Bhava and Ghati Lagna)
- 20 Ghati Γ· 5 = 4 signs exactly (no remainder). Bhava Lagna = 4s0Β°00β²00β³ + 4s = 8s0Β°00β²00β³.
- 10 Ghati β 10 signs; 20 Pala Γ· 2 = 10Β°. Offset = 10s10Β°00β²00β³. Ghati Lagna = 2s5Β°00β²00β³ + 10s10Β°00β²00β³ = 12s15Β°00β²00β³ β mod 12 signs = 0s15Β°00β²00β³ (Aries 15Β°).
- 20Β°35β²40β³ + 6Β°18β²00β³ = 26Β°53β²40β³ β 7s26Β°53β²40β³, confirming the book's stated result.
Β§5C β More New Numbers (Bhava and Ghati Lagna, abstract set)
- Bhava Lagna: 25 Ghati Γ· 5 = 5 signs exactly. 6s12Β°00β²00β³ + 5s = 11s12Β°00β²00β³.
- Ghati Lagna: 25 Ghati β 25 signs; 00 Pala Γ· 2 = 0Β°. 6s12Β°00β²00β³ + 25s0Β°00β²00β³ = 31s12Β° β mod 12 signs (31 β 24 = 7) = 7s12Β°00β²00β³.
Β§5D β One More Ghati Lagna
8 Ghati β 8 signs; 10 Pala Γ· 2 = 5Β°. Offset = 8s5Β°00β²00β³. 3s0Β°00β²00β³ + 8s5Β°00β²00β³ = 11s5Β°00β²00β³.
Β§5E β Reasoning Check
No, not necessarily. Bhava Lagna depends on the exact Ishta Kaala (elapsed time from sunrise), which varies continuously through the day β two births sharing the same natal sign but occurring at different exact times within that sign's rising window will generally have different Ishta Kaalas and therefore different Bhava Lagna offsets, even though their natal Lagna sign is identical.
Β§5F / Β§5G
No fixed answer β self-recorded from your own chart and calculation.
Next lesson: Varnada Dasha (Ch. 6 v.17β27) β uses today's Hora Lagna directly.
Chart Clinic¶
Chart used: my own natal chart Stage: 1 β The Mirror, adapted (as in S1-M4-L1). Full recomputation of the Special Ascendants by hand is optional, not required, for this Clinic β the reasoning chain below can be completed with the Special Ascendant sign/degree alone, however obtained.
Step 0 β Look Up¶
If you have access to software or are willing to compute it (Application Exercise, Part A/B method), find your own Hora Lagna β you'll need it for the next lesson (Varnada Dasha) regardless.
Steps 1β7 β Full Reasoning Chain¶
| Step | Your entry |
|---|---|
| 1. Observation β your Bhava Lagna's sign (and Hora Lagna's, if computed) | |
| 2. Relevant BPHS Principle β Ch. 6, the specific verse defining the Special Ascendant you're examining | |
| 3. Supporting Evidence β does anything about your known life history seem to align more with your Bhava Lagna's sign/lord than with your natal Lagna's? Look honestly, don't force it | |
| 4. Contradicting Evidence β actively look for it: does anything contradict a Bhava-Lagna-based reading? | |
| 5. Interpretation β given steps 3β4, how much independent explanatory value does the Bhava Lagna seem to add beyond your natal Lagna, for you personally? | |
| 6. Confidence Level β strong / probable / tentative / speculative | |
| 7. Reflection β does BPHS's "use all of them together" approach (v.9) feel more or less useful than relying on the natal Lagna alone, based on this one test? |
Source Citation¶
Cite the specific Ch. 6 verse for whichever Special Ascendant you examine (Bhava: v.2β3; Hora: v.4β5; Ghati: v.6β8), per this course's citation format.
Self-Review Before Submitting¶
- Every principle cited traces to today's actual assigned reading, not memory or outside software documentation
- Contradicting evidence was genuinely sought, not skipped
- Confidence level reflects the strength of the evidence, not how confident you feel
- No conclusion is stated more strongly than the evidence supports
This is reviewed for: correct reasoning, honest handling of weak or absent evidence, and no overclaiming that a Special Ascendant "explains" something the natal Lagna could equally explain β not for a complete personality match.
