Module 1 Assessment — Cosmology and the Divine Origin of the Grahas¶
Module Test: S01-M01 — Foundations of Creation (Ch. 1–2)¶
Cumulative test — this checks whether Chapters 1 and 2 have been integrated together, not just recalled separately. Longer and more synthetic than either lesson's individual quiz.
Part 1 — Recall (both chapters)¶
- Name the three skandhas of Jyotiṣa and state which is foremost.
- Name all nine graha–avatāra pairings.
- Name the four Pūrṇāvatāras and the grahas they correspond to.
Part 2 — Understanding¶
- Explain the jīvātmā-aṁśa / paramātmā-aṁśa distinction from Chapter 1, then explain how Chapter 2 uses that same distinction to classify the nine avatāras. Your answer should make the connection explicit, not describe each chapter separately.
- Trace the Sānkhya evolution chain (Puruṣa/Prakṛti → Mahātattva → Ahaṁkāra → Devas/senses/elements) and explain where, if anywhere, the grahas enter this chain.
Part 3 — Application¶
- A new student asks: "Why does it matter to me, as someone trying to learn to read charts, that Rama is an avatāra of the Sun?" Write a short paragraph (4–6 sentences) answering as if you were teaching them — connect it forward to at least one specific later topic (Ch. 3 deities, Karakas, or the propitiation chapters).
- Using the eight-part reasoning structure from the course's internal chart_application template (observable fact → BPHS principle → source → interpretation → supporting evidence → contradicting evidence → confidence level → conclusion), apply it to this claim: "Since Mars is a Pūrṇāvatāra (Narasimha) and Mercury is not, Mars must be considered the stronger of the two planets in every chart." Your conclusion should state plainly whether the evidence in Ch. 1–2 supports this claim, and at what confidence level.
Part 4 — Source Awareness¶
- For each of the following, state whether it is Explicitly stated in BPHS, Translator commentary, or Not located in the source:
- a) "The grahas carry a predominance of paramātmā-aṁśa."
- b) "The varṇa (caste) system has a scientific and philosophical basis in the three guṇas."
- c) "Chapter 3 explains planetary exaltation and debilitation points in degrees."
- d) "Four incarnations are wholly Paramātmāṁśa: Rama, Krishna, Narasimha, and Varaha."
Part 5 — Synthesis¶
- In no more than one paragraph, state the single premise that Module 1 (Ch. 1–2) establishes for the entire rest of this course, and explain what would go wrong with later chart-judgment work if that premise were forgotten or treated as merely decorative.
Target: ~80% correct. This module test, together with both lesson quizzes, determines Module 1 mastery in your personal progress tracker.

Answer Key: S01-M01 Module Test — Foundations of Creation¶
Part 1 — Recall¶
- Hora, Ganita, Samhita (Ch.1 v.2); Hora is foremost (v.3).
- Sun–Rama, Moon–Krishna, Mars–Narasiṁha, Mercury–Buddha, Jupiter–Vāmana, Venus–Parashurāma, Saturn–Kūrma, Rahu–Varāha, Ketu–Mīna (Ch.2 v.5–7).
- Rama (Sun), Krishna (Moon), Narasiṁha (Mars), Varāha (Rahu) (Ch.2 v.2, confirmed by v.5–7).
Part 2 — Understanding¶
- Ch. 1 (v.21–22) states the general principle: every being carries both jīvātmā-aṁśa and paramātmā-aṁśa, in varying proportion, with the grahas classified as predominantly paramātmāṁśa. Ch. 2 (v.2) applies this exact framework to nine specific, named entities — and goes one step further, drawing an internal gradation even within that "predominantly paramātmā" group (4 wholly paramātmā vs. 5 with some jīvāṁśa admixture). A strong answer states this as one continuous argument, not two separate summaries.
- Chain: Puruṣa/Prakṛti (3 guṇas) → Mahātattva (from increased Sattva) → Ahaṁkāra (threefold) → Sāttvika→Devas / Rājasika→senses / Tāmasika→Tanmātras→Pañca Mahābhūta. The grahas do not enter through this chain. They are classified through a separate track: v.21–24 states directly that "the Sun and other grahas" carry a predominance of paramātmāṁśa, and Ch. 2 v.3 states Viṣṇu incarnated as the navagrahas directly. The grahas are tied to the Paramātmā/Viṣṇu side of the cosmology, not produced as an evolute of Ahaṁkāra the way the senses and elements are. (A strong answer notices this distinction rather than assuming the grahas are just another item at the end of the Sānkhya chain.)
Part 3 — Application¶
- Accept any answer that (a) restates Ch. 2 v.3's claim that Viṣṇu incarnated as the grahas to deliver karma, and (b) names a specific forward connection — e.g., "Chapter 3 will assign each graha a ruling deity, and this is why that assignment isn't arbitrary" or "the propitiation chapters (86–98) worship these same avatāra-linked forms, so this chapter is the doctrinal reason those remedies target the deities they do."
- Applying the 8-part structure to "Since Mars is a Pūrṇāvatāra (Narasimha) and Mercury is not, Mars must be considered the stronger of the two planets in every chart":
| Field | Expected answer |
|---|---|
| Observable fact | Mars = Narasimha (Pūrṇa); Mercury = Buddha (partial) |
| Relevant BPHS principle | The Pūrṇa/partial avatāra classification |
| Source | Ch. 2, v.2 and v.5 |
| Interpretation (the claim) | Extends avatāra-completeness into a general claim about planetary strength in chart judgment |
| Supporting evidence | None — nothing in Ch. 1–2 links avatāra status to functional/positional strength |
| Contradicting evidence | BPHS's actual strength doctrine (Shadbala, Ch. 29) is an entirely separate technical system based on positional, directional, and temporal factors — not mythology. Nothing in Ch. 1–2 claims avatāra status determines strength "in every chart." |
| Confidence level | Speculative / unsupported |
| Final conclusion | Reject the claim. Ch. 1–2 do not support it. Planetary strength must be assessed later via Ch. 29 (Shadbala) and related material, not inferred from avatāra completeness. |
A correct answer must land on rejecting the claim and correctly flag it as an unsupported overextension — this is the point of the exercise (see Lesson 2's own caution against exactly this move).
Part 4 — Source Awareness¶
8. - a) Explicitly stated in BPHS — Ch. 1, v.21–24. - b) Translator commentary — inside Ch. 1's second Notes block. - c) Requires verification. Not yet confirmed by direct reading — Module 1 only covers Ch. 1–2. (The chapter inventory's own summary of Ch. 3's contents does list "exaltation and debilitation," making this plausible, but a student at this point in the course has not verified it firsthand. Answering "Explicitly stated" here would be overclaiming; answering "Not located in the source" would likely be wrong once Ch. 3 is actually read. "Requires verification" is the only honest answer available at this stage — this question is testing exactly that judgment.) - d) Explicitly stated in BPHS — Ch. 2, v.2.
Part 5 — Synthesis¶
- Model answer: Module 1 establishes that the grahas carry a predominance of paramātmā-aṁśa (Ch. 1) and makes this concrete through nine specific avatāra pairings with an internal Pūrṇa/partial tier (Ch. 2) — together, this is why a chart can be treated as describing a real, karma-bearing life rather than an arbitrary symbolic diagram. If this premise is forgotten, every later technique (yogas, dashas, strength assessment, remedies) risks being applied as mechanical rule-following disconnected from any reason to believe the rules describe something real — exactly the "mechanical guesswork" the existing Ch. 1 workbook itself warns against.
