Module 6 — Aspects of Signs and Planets

Module title: Aspects of the Signs and Planets Chapters: Ch. 9 ("Aspects of the Signs") Corresponds to: S1-M6 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: matches the syllabus's original 1-lesson estimate — the second module (after S1-M4) whose original estimate held without revision. Ch. 9 is a compact 16 verses, but it teaches two distinct, parallel aspect systems (sign/triplicity-based full aspects, and planet-based graduated "paada"/quarter-strength aspects) plus two different diagram traditions for visualizing sign aspects — dense enough to earn full treatment within one lesson, but not long enough to need splitting.

Purpose

This module teaches how signs and planets "see" (aspect) each other and each other's houses — a concept every later interpretive chapter (house judgment, yogas, strength) depends on. BPHS gives two genuinely different aspect frameworks in the same chapter and states plainly that both are valid ("spoken of in two ways," v.16) — this module teaches both without resolving how they interact in a real chart reading, since that practical reconciliation belongs to Ch. 28 ("Evaluation of Planetary Aspects," Semester 2), not this introductory chapter.

Module Objectives

By the end of this module I should be able to:

  • State the sign/triplicity-based full-aspect rule (movable↔fixed, dual↔dual) and reproduce BPHS's own worked example.
  • Describe both diagram traditions for visualizing sign aspects (the "prevalent" one BPHS's translator endorses, and the alternate one from a different edition) and correctly attribute each to its source.
  • State the general planetary-aspect rule (v.10: 3rd/10th, 5th/9th, 4th/8th, 7th) and the graduated "paada" (quarter-strength) special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars.
  • Explain why this chapter presents two aspect systems as parallel tools rather than one superseding the other, and identify this as an open practical question this course doesn't yet resolve.

Lessons in This Module

Lesson File BPHS content Verses Printed page
Lesson 1 Lesson S01-M06-L01: Aspects of Signs and Planets Full chapter — sign aspects, aspect diagrams, planetary aspects, graduated special aspects Ch.9 v.1–16 157

Workbook / Homework / Application / Quiz Plan

Standard full set, matching Module 4's single-lesson depth — this chapter earns thorough treatment (two aspect systems, two diagrams) despite being short.

Chart Clinic Plan

Stage 1 — apply both aspect systems to the student's own D1 chart and compare what each reveals; a genuinely productive Stage 1 test since aspect is a same-moment (not time-sensitive) factor.

Module Test Plan

Module 6 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 6 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Modules 4 through 8 previously shared one combined cluster test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for any of these modules.

Mastery Requirements

  • Lesson mastery check passed
  • Master Glossary updated (Rashi Drishti, Graha Drishti, paada/quarter-aspect terms)
  • Research Journal entry made
  • Chart Clinic reasoning submitted and critiqued
  • BPHS Field Manual — evaluate after the lesson is built whether a new entry is warranted (candidate: "BPHS teaches two parallel aspect systems, not one refined system — don't assume the graduated planetary aspects replace the sign-based full aspects")

Source References (whole module)

  • Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1 (Girish Chand Sharma translation, Sagar Publications), Volume 1, Chapter 9 ("Aspects of the Signs"), verses 1–16. Printed-page anchor: chapter start, page 157.
  • Four images in this chapter verified directly against the EPUB: 00016.jpeg (a worked-example D1 chart illustrating v.4–5's sign-aspect Notes), 00017.jpeg and 00018.jpeg (circular and square renderings of the "prevalent" aspect-diagram tradition, matching v.7–8's own directional verse exactly), and 00019.jpeg (the alternate diagram tradition from a different edition, cited by the translator and matching that edition's own quoted verse exactly). All four are genuine, confirmed diagrams — not fabricated from broken links.
