Module 7 — Judgement of Houses¶
Module title: Judgement of Houses — Significations and the Prosperity/Affliction Rule Chapters: Ch. 13 ("Judgement of Houses") Corresponds to: S1-M7 in 02 — Course Syllabus Pacing note: matches the syllabus's original 1-lesson estimate — the third module (after S1-M4, S1-M6) whose estimate held without revision. Ch. 13 is a compact 16-verse signification index, deliberately much lighter than the full house-by-house effects chapters (Ch. 14–25) waiting in Semester 2 — this module is the map, not the territory.
Purpose¶
Ch. 13 gives BPHS's own list of what each of the twelve houses signifies (physique, wealth, siblings, and so on through the 12th), plus one general rule for judging whether a house is "prospering" or "afflicted." This is intentionally an overview — Semester 2's Ch. 14–25 will each dedicate a full lesson (or several) to one house's complete effects. Today establishes the vocabulary and the general health-check rule those future lessons will build on.
Module Objectives¶
By the end of this module I should be able to:
- State BPHS's own given signification(s) for each of the twelve houses.
- Explain the general house-prosperity/affliction rule (occupation/aspect by benefics or own lord vs. malefics or evil-house lords) and identify which specific concept (Avasthas) it forward-references without yet teaching.
- Distinguish this module's overview-level treatment from Semester 2's dedicated per-house lessons, and explain why the difference in depth is intentional.
- Identify a minor terminological looseness in the translator's own bracketed gloss of "evil houses" in this chapter, compared to Ch. 8's stated Trik-sthana definition.
Lessons in This Module¶
| Lesson | File | BPHS content | Verses | Printed page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lesson 1 | Lesson S01-M07-L01: Judgement of Houses — Significations and the Prosperity/Affliction Rule | Full chapter — all 12 house significations, prosperity/affliction rule | Ch.13 v.1–16 | 189 |
Workbook / Homework / Application / Quiz Plan¶
Standard set, but deliberately recall/classification-weighted (matching this chapter's own overview nature) rather than deep-interpretation-weighted — deep interpretation is Semester 2's job.
Chart Clinic Plan¶
Stage 1 — a natural fit: identify one or two houses whose occupants/aspects match the prosperity/affliction rule, and test against known life outcomes in that house's domain.
Module Test Plan¶
Module 7 ends with its own standalone Module Test (Module 7 Assessment), per the course's per-module assessment structure. Modules 4 through 8 previously shared one combined cluster test; that combined file is retained for provenance only (see its own superseded note) and is no longer the live assessment for any of these modules.
Mastery Requirements¶
- Lesson mastery check passed
- Master Glossary updated (all 12 house signification lists)
- Research Journal entry made
- Chart Clinic reasoning submitted and critiqued
- BPHS Field Manual — evaluate after the lesson whether a new entry is warranted
Source References (whole module)¶
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Volume 1 (Girish Chand Sharma translation, Sagar Publications), Volume 1, Chapter 13 ("Judgement of Houses"), verses 1–16. Printed-page anchor: chapter start, page 189.
- No diagrams referenced in this chapter — no EPUB verification needed.
